Production of superoxide by human malignant melanoma cells.

Metastasis is a complicated multi-step process involving interactions between tumour cells, the extracellular matrix and the vessel walls. Experimental observations suggest that leucocyte migration and function could be a suitable model in order to understand tumour cell dissemination. In the present report we show and quantify the production of free radicals by human malignant melanoma cells (St-ml12) by means of a spectrophotometrical method, using an enzyme immunoassay reader. The role of TCF3 as potential master regulator in blastemal Wilms tumors

Wilms tumors are the most common type of pediatric kidney tumors. While the overall prognosis for patients is favorable, especially tumors that exhibit a blastemal subtype after preoperative chemotherapy have a poor prognosis. For an improved risk assessment and therapy stratification, it is essential to identify the driving factors that are distinctive for this aggressive subtype. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is caused by defective DNA mismatch repair (MMR), and manifests as accumulation of small insertions and deletions (indels) in short tandem repeats of the genome. Another form of repeat instability, elevated microsatellite alterations at selected tetranucleotide repeats (EMAST), has been suggested to occur in 50% to 60% of colorectal cancer (CRC), of which approximately one quarter are accounted for by MSI. Unlike for MSI, the criteria for defining EMAST is not consensual. Membrane vesicles shed into the extracellular medium by human breast carcinoma cells carry tumor-associated surface antigens.

We have compared the pattern of surface antigen expression, as detected by monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), in plasma membranes vs shed membrane vesicles of two human breast carcinoma cell lines, MCF-7 and 8701-BC. Antigen expression was detected on cells by immunofluorescence (IF) analysis, whilst, due to their small dimensions, the same technique was not applicable to vesicles. For these structures dot-blot analysis and immunoelectron microscopy (IEM) were employed. Assembling a consensus on actinic cheilitis: A Delphi study.

Aims: To discuss the terminology to define and classify actinic cheilitis (AC) and to build a consensus on the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to AC. Methods: Two-round Delphi study using a questionnaire including 34 closed sentences (9 on terminology and taxonomy, 5 on potential for malignant transformation, 12 on diagnostic aspects, 8 on treatment) and 8 open questions. Experts’ agreement was rated using a Likert scale (1–7). Results: A consensus was reached on 24 out 34 statements (73.5%) and on 5 out of 8 (62.5%) close-ended questions. Involvement of the chromosomal region 11q13 in renal oncocytoma: case report and literature review.

Renal oncocytomas comprise a cytogenetically heterogeneous group of tumors consisting potentially of cytogenetic distinguishable subgroups. Review of the literature revealed loss of chromosome 1 and Y as a possible anomaly for at least one subset of oncocytomas. The frequent finding of rearrangements involving chromosome 11 band q13 characterizes another subset of oncocytomas. We report the cytogenetic and pathological features of a renal oncocytoma diagnosed in a 72-year-old woman and found a t(9;11)(p23;q13) as a consistent abnormality. This supports the idea that translocations involving 11q13 define a further subset of oncocytoma. (C) Elsevier Science Inc., 1997.

Imaging of non-glandular superficial metastases: A comparison of xeroradiography, ultrasonography and computed tomography

Between January 1983 and July 1987, 1,622 cancer patients were evaluated to outline the possible applications and limits of various investigative techniques for evaluating metastases. Seventy-three cases with superficial metastases of the dermal-hypodermal (59) layers, of the muscles (11) and of other target organs (3) were included in the study. Possible involvement of the IL4 gene in Waldenström's macroglobulinemia

Abstract We report the results of a molecular investigation of 11 patients affected by Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, a rare B-cell malignancy characterized by an excessive proliferation of immunoglobulin(Ig)M-secreting plasmacytoid cells. In particular, we studied the interleukin-4 (IL4) gene, which codes for a B-specific growth factor capable of stimulating the proliferation and differentiation of secreting plasma cells. By Southern hybridization, in three patients we found the presence of additional bands in comparison with the expected pattern; moreover, these bands showed a different degree of intensity.
