Non-invasive diagnosis of oral cancer: The role of electro-analytical methods and nanomaterials
2017
Abstract Oral cancer is a kind of head and neck cancer and is each cancerous tissue growth located in the oral cavity. Non-invasive early diagnosis of oral cancer is the most effective means to reduce death from this disease or increase the survival time. In this review, various types of electro-analytical methods for detection of oral cancer were discussed. The emphasis is placed on non-invasive detection of oral based on immune-, geno-, cyto-, apta-, and enzyme-biosensing strategies. In the first part of review, various electrochemical immunosensing methods for the detection of common biomarker in oral cancer and examines their potential as a new method were discussed. In the second part …
Early stage screening of breast cancer using electrochemical biomarker detection
2017
Recently researchers have driven their attention in the development of biosensors for breast cancer detection using different biomarkers. This review reports a systematic study of the usefulness of marker-based electrochemical biosensors in breast cancer and its early diagnosis. Also, various types of electro-analytical methods for early stage screening of breast cancer were discussed. The emphasis is placed on immune-, geno- cyto- and enzyme-biosensing strategies. In addition, the advantages offered by some nano-materials in detection of breast cancer biomarkers are illustrated with representative recent examples that highlight the scientific interest in widening the use of new materials/m…

Towards early risk biomarkers: serum metabolic signature in childhood predicts cardio-metabolic risk in adulthood
2019
AbstractCardiovascular diseases have their origin in childhood. Early biomarkers identifying individuals with increased risk for disease are needed to support early detection and to optimize prevention strategies. By applying machine learning approach on high throughput NMR-based metabolomics data, we identified metabolic predictors of cardiovascular risk in circulation in a cohort of 396 females, followed from childhood (mean age 11.2 years) to early adulthood (mean age 18.1 years). The identified childhood metabolic signature included three circulating biomarkers robustly associating with increased cardiovascular risk in early adulthood (AUC = 0.641 to 0.802, all p<0.01). These associa…
Circulating miR-99a-5p Expression in Plasma: A Potential Biomarker for Early Diagnosis of Breast Cancer
2020
MicroRNAs have emerged as new diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for breast cancer. Herein, we analysed miR-99a-5p expression levels in primary tumours and plasma of breast cancer patients to evaluate its usefulness as a minimally invasive diagnostic biomarker. MiR-99a-5p expression levels were determined by quantitative real-time PCR in three independent cohorts of patients: (I) Discovery cohort: breast cancer tissues (n = 103) and healthy breast tissues (n = 26)
Neoadjuvant chemotherapy for stage IIIA-N2 non-small cell lung cancer
2005
Neoadjuvant chemotherapy in potentially resectable stage IIIA-N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has become standard of treatment in the last years. Two randomised pioneer phase III trials conducted with second generation platinum combinations had demonstrated an advantage in survival of induction chemotherapy followed by surgery versus surgery alone. Subsequently, a wide number of phase II studies with third generation platinum-based doublets or triplets have increased the evidence of the activity as well as the good tolerability of this approach. Nowadays, the main topics of ongoing clinical research are to assess the role of induction chemotherapy in early stage disease, and the role …
Transcriptome based identification of mouse cumulus cell markers that predict the developmental competence of their enclosed antral oocytes
2013
BACKGROUND: The cumulus cells (CCs) enveloping antral and ovulated oocytes have been regarded as putative source of non-invasive markers of the oocyte developmental competence. A number of studies have indeed observed a correlation between CCs gene expression, embryo quality, and final pregnancy outcome. Here, we isolated CCs from antral mouse oocytes of known developmental incompetence (NSN-CCs) or competence (SN-CCs) and compared their transcriptomes with the aim of identifying distinct marker transcripts. RESULTS: Global gene expression analysis highlighted that both types of CCs share similar transcriptomes, with the exception of 422 genes, 97.6% of which were down-regulated in NSN-CCs …
Neuroprotective Potential of GDF11: Myth or Reality?
2019
In the brain, aging is accompanied by cellular and functional deficiencies that promote vulnerability to neurodegenerative disorders. In blood plasma from young and old animals, various factors such as growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11), whose levels are elevated in young animals, have been identified. The blood concentrations of these factors appear to be inversely correlated with the age-related decline of neurogenesis. The identification of GDF11 as a “rejuvenating factor” opens up perspectives for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. As a pro-neurogenic and pro-angiogenic agent, GDF11 may constitute a basis for novel therapeutic strategies.

Uptake of an Endocytic Marker by Rice Cells: Variations Related to Osmotic and Saline Stress
2003
Saline and osmotic stress are the main abiotic factors limiting the productivity of rice and other crop plants. Although both coincide in generating water deficit and affect many aspects of plant growth and development similarly, some effects of salinity are distinctively related to the ionic component of salt stress. At the cellular level, dessication tolerance is largely dependent on the cell's ability for osmotic adjustment. Here, we have studied the effects of saline and osmotic stress on endocytosis by rice cells, to investigate the common and distinctive effects of saline-generated stress and osmotically generated stress, and the possible involvement of endocytosis in tolerance mechan…
