Interaction of polyribosomal components and polyribonucleotides with microtubule proteins

1982

To demonstrate the affinity of RNA-containing polyribosomal components (isolated from L5178y cells) to microtubules, microtubule protein was attached to an insoluble matrix. In contrast to ribosomes, poly(A) (+) mRNA and poly(A)-RNP were found to bind to the matrix. Using synthetic polyribonucleotides, no significant differences in the binding properties of single- and double stranded polymers of different base composition to microtubule protein were observed. However, binding is dependent on the size of the polymer; a minimal chain length of 12 nucleotide units is required.

Polymeric gegenions induced variability and mobility of amphiphilic supramolecular structures on solid substrates

1992

Abstract The micromorphological variations of amphiphilic L -glutamate derivatives at air-substrate interfaces due to an adjacent mobile polymer matrix have been investigated via fluorescence microscopy. Adjusted monolayers of the L -glutamate derivatives have been transferred by LB technique out of different aggregation states onto various substrates. The substrates have been prepared by successive polymer preadsorption to the solid support. The influence of the adjacent polymer layers on the domain morphology as a function of water content and temperature has been examined intensively. Moreover, reversible domain changes induced by temperature variation of the transferred films have been …

Prediction of the morphology of polymer-clay nanocomposites

2015

Abstract Polymer nanocomposites have continually attracted increasing interest over the last decade, due to significant improvements they can offer compared to neat polymer matrices. However, the final morphology of a nanocomposite, determined by several variables, can significantly influence the macroscopic properties of the final product. Therefore, it is important to study the interactions between processing, morphology, structure and rheological properties, and the suitability of existing models in order to predict the system's behaviour with change of the main processing variables. In this work, the applicability of a predictive theory based on the Wu model was formulated and proposed …

Comment on “Local impermeant anions establish the neuronal chloride concentration”

2014

Glykys et al . (Reports, 7 February 2014, p. 670) proposed that cytoplasmic impermeant anions and polyanionic extracellular matrix glycoproteins establish the local neuronal intracellular chloride concentration, [Cl – ] i , and thereby the polarity of γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA A ) receptor signaling. The experimental procedures and results in this study are insufficient to support these conclusions. Contradictory results previously published by these authors and other laboratories are not referred to.

Tenascin in denervated human muscle

1996

Tenascin is a large oligomeric glycoprotein of the extracellular matrix. Its location is limited in innervated muscle tissues. We investigated immunohistologically, using two monoclonal antibodies (mab) against Tenascin, biopsied denervated human muscle of children and adults. Tenascin was present in the interstitial space among denervated muscle fibres. Accumulation of Tenascin in denervated adult muscle tissue was frequent, accumulation in denervated muscle tissue of children was sparse and weak. The two antibodies reacted correspondingly. Tenascin was not only found in the vicinity of atrophic muscle fibres, but also close to normally sized fibres, suggesting an early stage of denervatio…

Biopolymer based nanocomposites reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets

2016

In this work, biopolymer based nanocomposites filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) were prepared by melt compounding in a batch mixer. The polymer used as matrix was a commercial biodegradable polymer-blend of PLA and a copolyester (BioFlex®). The prepared materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), rheological and mechanical measurements. Moreover, the effect of the GnP amount on the investigated properties was evaluated. The results indicated that the incorporation of GnP increased the stiffness of the biopolymeric matrix.

Numerical model for composite material with polymer matrix reinforced by carbon nanotubes

2008

Due to the high stiffness and strength, as well as their ability to act as conductors, carbon nanotubes are under intense investigation as fillers in polymeric materials. The nature of the carbon nanotube/polymer bonding and the curvature of the carbon nanotubes within the polymer have arisen as particular factors in the efficacy of the carbon nanotubes to actually provide any enhanced stiffness or strength to the nanocomposite. Here the effects of carbon nanotube curvature and interface interaction with the matrix on the nanocomposite stiffness are investigated using nanomechanical analysis. In particular, the effects of poor bonding and thus poor shear lag load transfer to the carbon nano…

Morphology control in biphasic hybrid systems of semiconducting materials.

2015

Simple blends of inorganic nanocrystals and organic (semiconducting) polymers usually lead to macroscopic segregation. Thus, such blends typically exhibit inferior properties than expected. To overcome the problem of segregation, polymer coated nanocrystals (nanocomposites) have been developed. Such nanocomposites are highly miscible within the polymer matrix. In this Review, a summary of synthetic approaches to achieve stable nanocomposites in a semiconducting polymer matrix is presented. Furthermore, a theoretical background as well as an overview concerning morphology control of inorganic NCs in polymer matrices are provided. In addition, the morphologic behavior of highly anisotropic na…

Multispectral autoflourescence detection of skin neoplasia using steady-state techniques

2019

In the current study were used excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS) steady-state techniques in a broad spectral regions (excitation at 220-500 nm and emission at 280-850 nm) to achieve the whole set of endogenous fluorophores, existed in normal and neoplastic cutaneous tissues. Several types of benign, dysplastic and malignant types of skin lesions were investigated ex vivo using both EEM and SFS modalities, namely the basal cell papilloma and carcinoma, pigmented nevi, dysplastic nevi, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. Histological analysis was used as a “gold standard” for evaluation of clinical diagnosis of the lesions investig…
