Analyzing the impact of using the SRP (Simplified roughness parameterization) method on soil moisture retrieval over different regions of the globe

International audience; This paper focuses on a new approach to account for soil roughness effects in the retrieval of soil moisture (SM) at L-band in the framework of the SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission: the Simplified Roughness Parameterization (SRP). While the classical retrieval approach considers SM and τ nad (vegetation optical depth) as retrieved parameters, this approach is based on the retrieval of SM and the TR parameter combining τ nad and soil roughness (TR τ nad + Hr /2). Adaptive algorithms robust to impulsive noise with low computational cost using order statistic

Abstract In this paper a family of adaptive algorithms robust to impulsive noise and with low computational cost are presented. Unlike other approaches, no cost functions or filtering of the gradient are considered in order to update the filter coefficients. Its initial basis is the basic LMS algorithm and its sign-error variant. The proposed algorithms can be considered as some sign-error variants of the LMS algorithm. The algorithms are successfully tested in terms of accuracy and convergence in a standard system identification simulation in which an impulsive noise is present. Simulations show that they improve the performance of LMS variants that are robust to impulsive noise.

Objectives: The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Group is developing a computer-adaptive test (CAT) version of the EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30). We evaluated the measurement properties of the CAT versions of physical functioning (PF) and fatigue (FA) and compared these with the corresponding QLQ-C30 scales. Cross-national validation of the social media disorder scale: findings from adolescents from 44 countries

Background and aims: There is currently no cross-national validation of a scale that measures problematic social media use (SMU). The present study investigated and compared the psychometric properties of the social media disorder (SMD) scale among young adolescents from different countries. Design: Validation study. Setting and participants: Data came from 222 532 adolescents from 44 countries participating in the health behaviour in school-aged children (HBSC) survey (2017/2018). Validity and reliability of an inertial sensor device for specific running patterns in soccer

Electronic performance tracking devices are largely employed in team sports to monitor performance and improve training. To date, global positioning system (GPS) based devices are those mainly used in soccer training. The aim of this study was to analyse the validity and reliability of the inertial sensor device (ISD) in monitoring distance and speed in a soccer-specific circuit and how their performance compare to a GPS system. 44 young male soccer players (age: 14.9 ± 1.1, range 9–16, years, height: 1.65 ± 0.10 m, body mass: 56.3 ± 8.9 kg) playing in a non-professional soccer team in Italy, participated in the study. Reliability of a new analysis to compute time to stabilization following a single leg drop jump landing in children.

Although a number of different methods have been proposed to assess the time to stabilization (TTS), none is reliable in every axis and no tests of this type have been carried out on children. The purpose of this study was thus to develop a new computational method to obtain TTS using a time-scale (frequency) approach [i.e. continuous wavelet transformation (WAV)] in children. Preliminary results on direct quantitative determination of cocaine in impregnated materials by infrared spectroscopy

Abstract Partial least squares models were built for the direct determination of cocaine in seized impregnated smuggled materials. Measurements are based on the attenuated total reflectance middle infrared spectra (ATR-MIR) and diffuse reflectance spectra in the near range (DR-NIR) obtained directly from the surface of the impregnated materials. The aforementioned procedures offer fast, cheap and environmentally friendly green alternatives to the reference method based on the extraction of the drug and its quantification by gas chromatography. A full-atom multiscale modelling for sodium chloride diffusion in anion exchange membranes

Abstract A novel full-atom multiscale method, combining different computational approaches and aimed to describe diffusion of multiple ions in anion exchange membranes (AEM), is presented. The method is used to evaluate diffusion of chloride and sodium ions in polysulfone tetramethylammonium (PSU-TMA) membranes, with particular attention to the co-ion diffusion. The hydration of the PSU-TMA is computed as a function of the membrane ionic exchange capacity via Density Functional Theory (DFT) and used for carrying out molecular dynamics simulations (MD).
