Observation of High-Energy Astrophysical Neutrinos in Three Years of IceCube Data
2014
A search for high-energy neutrinos interacting within the IceCube detector between 2010 and 2012 provided the first evidence for a high-energy neutrino flux of extraterrestrial origin. Results from an analysis using the same methods with a third year (2012-2013) of data from the complete IceCube detector are consistent with the previously reported astrophysical flux in the 100 TeV - PeV range at the level of $10^{-8}\, \mathrm{GeV}\, \mathrm{cm}^{-2}\, \mathrm{s}^{-1}\, \mathrm{sr}^{-1}$ per flavor and reject a purely atmospheric explanation for the combined 3-year data at $5.7 \sigma$. The data are consistent with expectations for equal fluxes of all three neutrino flavors and with isotrop…

The colours of Segesta. Searching for the traces of the lost pigments
2023
Many monuments and objects of the ancient civilizations were painted, but unfortunately the pigments are not still present and sometimes only small traces are evident. The analysis of the traces requires a multianalytical approach through the use of non-invasive techniques and only if necessary of a microsampling. Here, the study of the traces of colours found in some architectural elements and findings belonging to the Archeological Park of Segesta (Trapani, Italy) is reported. The traces are identified and characterised via several techniques such as Optical Microscopy, UV-Fluorescence Imaging, Fiber Optical Reflectance Spectroscopy (FORS), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and FT-IR Spectroscopy.…
Transfer Learning with Convolutional Networks for Atmospheric Parameter Retrieval
2018
The Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) on board the MetOp satellite series provides important measurements for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP). Retrieving accurate atmospheric parameters from the raw data provided by IASI is a large challenge, but necessary in order to use the data in NWP models. Statistical models performance is compromised because of the extremely high spectral dimensionality and the high number of variables to be predicted simultaneously across the atmospheric column. All this poses a challenge for selecting and studying optimal models and processing schemes. Earlier work has shown non-linear models such as kernel methods and neural networks perform w…
Accounting for Input Noise in Gaussian Process Parameter Retrieval
2020
Gaussian processes (GPs) are a class of Kernel methods that have shown to be very useful in geoscience and remote sensing applications for parameter retrieval, model inversion, and emulation. They are widely used because they are simple, flexible, and provide accurate estimates. GPs are based on a Bayesian statistical framework which provides a posterior probability function for each estimation. Therefore, besides the usual prediction (given in this case by the mean function), GPs come equipped with the possibility to obtain a predictive variance (i.e., error bars, confidence intervals) for each prediction. Unfortunately, the GP formulation usually assumes that there is no noise in the inpu…
Surface characterization of metal ions loaded TiO2 photocatalysts: structure-activity relationship
2004
Transition metal loaded TiO2 powders were characterised and tested for the photodegradation of some organic acids. Both Lewis and Brønsted surface acid sites were present in the samples containing large amounts of Mo, V and W. The Brønsted sites are associated to the presence of the transition metals as they do not exist in the unloaded support, and in particular to the presence of these metals in high oxidation states. The trend of the pzc values of the various powders matches rather well both with the surface acidity of the samples experimentally determined by NH3 adsorption and with a scale of acidity/basicity for bulk binary oxides. XPS investigation indicates that only the presence of …
Defining and measuring the network flexibility of humanitarian supply chains: insights from the 2015 Nepal earthquake
2019
International audience; The efficient and effective response to disasters critically depends on humanitarian supply chains (HSCs). HSCs need to be flexible to adapt to uncertainties in needs, infrastructure conditions, and behavior of other organizations. The concept of ‘network flexibility’ is, however, not clearly defined. The lack of an unanimous definition has led to a lack of consistent understanding and comparisons. This paper makes a threefold contribution: first, it defines the concept of network flexibility for HSC in the context of sudden onset disasters. Second, it proposes a framework to measure network flexibility in HSCs. Third, we apply our framework to the 2015 Nepal earthqu…
Nanomanufacturing/Nanotechnology
2008
This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding the fabrication of nanoproducts and element of micro-electromechanical systems using various techniques and processes. Both well-established techniques, such as nanomachining (ultra-precision) and new trends in improving nanoprocesses taking into account AFM, laser beam machining, electron beam machining processes are overviewed. The background of nanomachining processes, including typical machining operations such as turning, milling and grinding and different construction materials (metallic and nonmetallic), is outlined. The physical mechanisms responsible for the transition from brittle to ductile regime machining are explained. Mo…
Pain assessment and management in Italian Haemophilia Centres
2021
BACKGROUND: Although the widespread use of factor VIII/IX replacement therapy has significantly reduced the severity of arthropathy in persons with haemophilia (PWH), some develop degenerative joint changes, associated with significant pain. The aim of this survey was to investigate the management and perception of pain among Italian physicians who treat PWH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between September and October 2017, a questionnaire was distributed to 35 Italian haemophilia treatment centres (60 physicians). RESULTS: Fifty-three haemophilia specialists completed the survey. We found that there was good agreement (98.1%) on the need to investigate pain at each clinical visit, but there was h…
Measurement invariance of the Behavioural Regulation in Sport Questionnaire when completed by young athletes across five European countries
2013
The purpose of this study was (1) to examine the factorial validity of the Behavioural Regulation Sport in Questionnaire (BRSQ) when completed by young soccer players in the Promoting Adolescent Physical Activity (PAPA) project (9-15 years old) in 5 European countries (France: n = 1248, Greece: n = 1507, Norway: n = 1397, Spain: n = 2245, and England: n = 1372) and (2) test the measurement invariance of its latent factors across these 5 countries.First, we tested the exploratory structural equation model (ESEM) factor analyses, allowing cross-loadings between factors, against the traditional independent clusters confirmatory factor analysis model (ICM-CFA), with all cross-loadings constrain…
