The Steps of User-Centered Design in Health Information Technology Development: Recommendations from a PhD Research Study
2016
This study was carried out to explore the steps of User-centered Design in development of health information technology. The technology was developed in two research projects: the European Union project United4Health that created a collaborative telemedicine system for remote monitoring of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and the Southern Norway regional project eHealth-extended Care Coordination that built an information system for coordination in inter-municipal health care teams. In both projects, the end-users were involved as active contributors in a User-centered Design process spanning from idea-generation until final deployment stages. This paper presents the steps in the User-…
Food Tray Sealing Fault Detection in Multi-Spectral Images Using Data Fusion and Deep Learning Techniques
2021
A correct food tray sealing is required to preserve food properties and safety for consumers. Traditional food packaging inspections are made by human operators to detect seal defects. Recent advances in the field of food inspection have been related to the use of hyperspectral imaging technology and automated vision-based inspection systems. A deep learning-based approach for food tray sealing fault detection using hyperspectral images is described. Several pixel-based image fusion methods are proposed to obtain 2D images from the 3D hyperspectral image datacube, which feeds the deep learning (DL) algorithms. Instead of considering all spectral bands in region of interest around a contamin…
Acceptance of Mobile Health Apps for Disease Management Among People With Multiple Sclerosis: Web-Based Survey Study
2018
Background: Mobile health (mHealth) apps might have the potential to promote self-management of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) in everyday life. However, the uptake of MS apps remains poor, and little is known about the facilitators and barriers for their efficient utilization, such as technology acceptance. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the acceptance of mHealth apps for disease management in the sense of behavioral intentions to use and explore determinants of utilization among people with MS based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). Methods: Participants for this Web-based cross-sectional study were recruited throughout Germany with t…
Data concerning the protein absorption and retention properties of xyloglucan-based hydrogel film
2018
In wound dressing applications, exudate absorption and retention are important properties. The data presented here assess the ability of the crosslinked xyloglucan-poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel films (XG-PVA), described in "Xyloglucan-based hydrogel films for wound dressing: Structure-property relationships" (Ajovalasit et al., 2018) [1] and "Biocompatibility, hemocompatibility and antimicrobial properties of xyloglucan-based hydrogel film for wound healing application" (Picone et al., 2019), to absorb and retain proteins. These properties were investigated by Comassie blue staining and electrophoresis of Fetal Serum Proteins. (C) 2018 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc. This is an open …
A Proposed Access Control-Based Privacy Preservation Model to Share Healthcare Data in Cloud
2020
Healthcare data in cloud computing facilitates the treatment of patients efficiently by sharing information about personal health data between the healthcare providers for medical consultation. Furthermore, retaining the confidentiality of data and patients' identity is a another challenging task. This paper presents the concept of an access control-based (AC) privacy preservation model for the mutual authentication of users and data owners in the proposed digital system. The proposed model offers a high-security guarantee and high efficiency. The proposed digital system consists of four different entities, user, data owner, cloud server, and key generation center (KGC). This approach makes…
Chances and Challenges of Computational Data Gathering and Analysis
2015
Digital and social media and large available data-sets generate various new possibilities and challenges for conducting research focused on perpetually developing online news ecosystems. This paper presents a novel computational technique for gathering and processing large quantities of data from Facebook. We demonstrate how to use this technique for detecting and analysing issue-attention cycles and news flows in Facebook groups and pages. Although the paper concentrates on a Finnish Facebook group as a case study, the demonstrated method can be used for gathering and analysing large sets of data from various social network sites and national contexts. The paper also discusses Facebook pla…
Dynamics of gene regulatory networks and their dependence on network topology and quantitative parameters – the case of phage λ
2019
Background Gene regulatory networks can be modelled in various ways depending on the level of detail required and biological questions addressed. One of the earliest formalisms used for modeling is a Boolean network, although these models cannot describe most temporal aspects of a biological system. Differential equation models have also been used to model gene regulatory networks, but these frameworks tend to be too detailed for large models and many quantitative parameters might not be deducible in practice. Hybrid models bridge the gap between these two model classes – these are useful when concentration changes are important while the information about precise concentrations and binding…
Prediction of the Fundamental Period of Infilled RC Frame Structures Using Artificial Neural Networks
2015
The fundamental period is one of the most critical parameters for the seismic design of structures. There are several literature approaches for its estimation which often conflict with each other, making their use questionable. Furthermore, the majority of these approaches do not take into account the presence of infill walls into the structure despite the fact that infill walls increase the stiffness and mass of structure leading to significant changes in the fundamental period. In the present paper, artificial neural networks (ANNs) are used to predict the fundamental period of infilled reinforced concrete (RC) structures. For the training and the validation of the ANN, a large data set i…
