Long-Term Stability of (Ti/Zr/Hf)CoSb1−xSnxThermoelectric p-Type Half-Heusler Compounds Upon Thermal Cycling

The effect of thermal cycling upon the thermoelectric performance of state-of-the-art p-type half-Heusler materials was investigated and correlated with the impact on the structural properties. We simulated a heat treatment of the material similar to actual applications in the mid-temperature range, such as occurs during the energy conversion from an automotive exhaust pipe. We compared three different compositions based on the (Ti/Zr/Hf)CoSb1−xSnx system. The best and most reliable performance was achieved using Ti0.5Hf0.5CoSb0.85Sn0.15, which reached a maximum figure of merit ZT of 1.1 at 700 °C. This study aims at measuring empirically the belief in meritocracy and analyzing the impact of education on this belief. The research is structured in three parts: – Measuring the hold and the spread of the idea of an educational meritocracy. – Assessing the perceived legitimacy of educational meritocracy – Analyzing the determinants of the belief in meritocracy, especially the schooling effect. La présente recherche (qui s'achèvera en 2007-2008) envisage une manière de tester empiriquement la thèse de la reproduction de Bourdieu et Passeron en explorant la perception de la légitimité des inégalités scolaires et de leurs incidences sociales, chez des individus inégalement formés. Elle entend ainsi explorer les relations entre trajectoire scolaire (niveau atteint, mais aussi filière de formation suivie) et intériorisation de la méritocratie et plus largement le jugement sur les inégalités existantes.

The paper aims at finding an explicit connection between the thesis issued by Arthur Adkins in the volume “Merit and Responsibility” (1960) and Nietzschean theories about the change of moral lexicon in the transition from archaic Greece to the democratic one. The retrieval of this connection is particularly focused on the notions of “merit” and “responsibility” and on the role played by Plato's moral theory.

L'auteur s'attache ici a decrire dans un premier temps l'accumulation progressive des inegalites sociales de reussite, amplifiees ensuite par des inegalites de choix et de strategies scolaires, avant d'aborder dans une seconde partie la question du role de l'ecole, en soulignant en particulier ce qui se joue au niveau des etablissements. Elle se propose de revenir dans la conclusion sur la question de la participation de l'ecole a l'ideologie meritocratique.

Exploiting the optical quadratic nonlinearity of zinc-blende semiconductors for guided-wave terahertz generation: A material comparison

We present a detailed analysis and comparison of dielectric waveguides made of CdTe, GaP, GaAs and InP for modal phase matched optical difference frequency generation (DFG) in the terahertz domain. From the form of the DFG equations, we derived the definition of a very general figure of merit (FOM). In turn, this FOM enabled us to compare different configurations, by taking into account linear and nonlinear susceptibility dispersion, terahertz absorption, and a rigorous evaluation of the waveguide modes properties. The most efficient waveguides found with this procedure are predicted to approach the quantum efficiency limit with input optical power in the order of kWs.
