Metal- and reagent-free highly selective anodic cross-coupling reaction of phenols.
2014
The direct oxidative cross-coupling of phenols is a very challenging transformation, as homo-coupling is usually strongly preferred. Electrochemical methods circumvent the use of oxidizing reagents or metal catalysts and are therefore highly attractive. Employing electrolytes with a high capacity for hydrogen bonding, such as methanol with formic acid or 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol, a direct electrolysis in an undivided cell provides mixed 2,2′-biphenols with high selectivity. This mild method tolerates a variety of moieties, for example, tert-butyl groups, which are not compatible with other strong electrophilic media but vital for later catalytic applications of the formed products.
Reaction Condition Screening by Using Electrochemical Microreactor: Application to Anodic Phenol-arene C,C Cross-Coupling Reaction in High Acceptor N…
2013
The anodic phenol-arene C,C cross-coupling reaction was achieved in inexpensive and sustainable media such as methanol, acetic acid, and formic acid by using an electrochemical microreactor which can provide a better performance to screen reaction conditions than in standard beaker-type electrolysis cells. Especially, formic acid as a reaction medium showed good performance. The total amount of cross-coupling product and homo-coupling products as a by-product was clearly increased as the solvent acceptor number increased. To control the selective oxidation of phenol, addition of methanol was effective.
Reduction of [(C 5 Me 5 ) 2 Mo 2 O 5 ] and [(C 5 Me 5 ) 2 Mo 2 O 4 ] in Methanol/Water/Trifluoroacetate Solutions Investigated by Combined On‐Line El…
2003
Complexes [Cp*2Mo2O5 ]( Cp* =η 5 -C5Me5) and [Cp*2Mo2O4] were investigated by combined on-line electrochemical (EC) reduction and electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) techniques in a trifluoroacetic acid buffered water/ methanol solution. The reduction products at the larger negative potentials are identical for both compounds. The studies reveal the existence of a wide range of previously unknown di- and trinuclear Mo V ,M o IV ,M o III , and mixed-val
Do electrospray mass spectra of surfactants mirror their aggregation state in solution?
2011
One important feature in the gas phase chemistry of surfactants is to ascertain whether their aggregates produced by electrospray ionization reflect those formed in the starting solution. With this aim, we have performed ESI-MS, ESI-MS/MS and ER-MS spectra of bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOTNa) solutions in different solvents, i.e. water, water/methanol, methanol and n-hexane. The results clearly indicate that, notwithstanding the strongly different aggregation state in solution (direct micelles in water and in water/methanol, molecular dispersion in methanol and reverse micelles in n-hexane) and marked effects of the solvent polarity on the total ionic current, the surfactant aggregate…
Stability of nitroaromatic specialty explosives in reversed-phase liquid chromatographic systems
2008
Abstract In this study, the stability of 2,4-dinitroanisole, 2,2′,4,4′,6,6′-hexanitrodiphenylsulfide, 2,3,4,6-tetranitroaniline, 2,4,6-trinitroaniline, 2,4,6-trinitroanisole, and 2,4,6-trinitrochlorobenzene in liquid chromatographic systems was studied under different solvent/eluent conditions. Stock solutions of the explosives were prepared in acetonitrile and diluted with acetone/water, acetonitrile/water, or methanol/water mixtures. Within 48 h, these working solutions were repeatedly injected onto a silica column and eluted with acetonitrile/water or methanol/water mobile phases. Under all conditions, 2,4-dinitroanisole was stable, whereas 2,4,6-trinitroaniline was stable only in the me…
Biological nitrate removal from wastewater of a metal-finishing industry
2006
An upflow packed bed reactor at laboratory scale has been operated for a continuous period of 5 months to investigate the technical feasibility of biological nitrate removal applied to the effluent of the coagulation-sedimentation wastewater of a metal-finishing industry. The reactor was fed with industrial wastewater in a five-fold dilution to reproduce the global spill in the factory (20/80, industrial wastewater/domestic wastewater) with a concentration of nitrate between 141 and 210 gNO(3)-N/m(3). Methanol was added as a carbon source for denitrification. Inlet flow rate was progressively increased from 9 to 40 L/day (nitrogen input load from 45 to 250 gNO(3)-N/(m(3)h)). The highest obs…
Phosphotransferase properties of human erythrocyte phosphoglycolate phosphatase.
1982
Abstract 1. 1. Human erythrocyte phosphoglycolate phosphatase (PGP) (EC 3.1.3.18) shows transferase properties. Using p -nitrophenylphosphate ( p -NPP) as substrate, methanol, at a concentration of 4.9 M. was the most efficient phosphate acceptor tested (60% phosphate transfer). 2. 2. The branched alcohols i -propanol and i -butanol accept the phosphate better than the unbranched compounds. The acceptor potency is methanol > ethanol > i -propanol > n -propanol > i -butanol > n -butanol. 3. 3. The relative transferase activity could be demonstrated to be independent of substrate concentration, pH. and the inhibitory effect of NaF at 2 and 4 mM. 4. 4. POP shows no transferase activity towards…
Optimization of microwave-assisted extraction of polyphenols from Quercus bark
2015
Abstract Box–Behnken response surface methodology was used to investigate and optimize microwave assisted extraction (MAE) (treatment power and time) of antioxidant compounds, especially polyphenols, from bark extracts. Moreover, the effects of solvent composition (methanol and ethanol) particle size, and pH conditions were evaluated and optimized. In addition, the effects of MAE were compared to conventional solvent extraction at room temperature and reflux extraction (at 100 °C). The results indicated that all process variables had a significant effect on polyphenol and antioxidant recovery, except for methanol (p > 0.05). For instance, TPC and antioxidant activity were increased when hig…
Refractive Indices and Deviations in Refractive Indices for Binary Mixtures of 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Trifluoromethanesulfonate with Methanol, E…
2009
Refractive indices of the binary mixtures of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([emim][triflate]) with methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol were experimentally measured over the whole range of compositions at T = (288.15 to 338.15) K and atmospheric pressure. From the experimental data, deviations in refractive indices have been calculated and fitted to an extended version of the Redlich−Kister equation, which takes into account the dependence on composition and temperature simultaneously. This dependence has been discussed. The deviations are always positive, and their extent follows the sequence methanol > ethanol > 2-propanol > 1-propanol, increasing when tem…
Colorimetric determination of alcohols in spirit drinks using a reversible solid sensor
2018
Abstract A sensor for the colorimetric estimation of the alcoholic content has been developed based on the entrapment of the reagent (4-N,N-dioctylamino)-4‘-trifluoroacetylazobenzene (ETHT 4001) into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modified with tretraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). When exposed to an alcoholic media, the sensor delivers ETHT 4001 so that it reacts with alcohols, resulting in a change in the solution color. The diffusion of the entrapped ETHT 4001 from the polymeric sensor to the working solution depends on the hydrophobicity of both the sensor matrix and the media, while the time of exposure determines whether the reagent reacts with methanol, or with methanol and ethanol. Thus, th…
