Diastereoselective Functionalization of a Spherand‐Type Calixarene

1994

Condensation of 5,5'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dihydroxybiphenyl (1) with formaldehyde yields a cyclic trimer 2 (and tetramer 3) having three (four) methylene groups less than a calix[6]arene (calix[8]arene). Alkylation of the (flexible) trimer with ethyl bromoacetate gives exclusively the stereoisomer 4 with C 2 symmetry, while the isomer with D 3 symmetry is not observed. Two isomers 6a and 6b (C 2 and C 1 symmetry) are obtained by treatment with tert-butyl bromoacetate which both are converted by transesterification with methanol into the same hexamethyl ester 5 having C 2 symmetry. These results are rationalized by restricted rotation around Ar-Ar bonds for larger O-alkyl groups also around Ar…

Synthesis and Reactivity of New Chelate-N-Heterocyclic Biscarbene Complexes of Ruthenium

2004

The carbene-ligand precursors methylenebis(N-alkylimidazolium) iodide (alkyl = methyl, neo-pentyl) and ethylenebis(N-methylimidazolium) chloride have been used in the preparation of several new Ru(II)-p-cymene complexes where the ligand behaves as mono- and bidentate. The molecular structures of the two biscarbene-complexes are reported. From the data reported, we can conclude that steric reasons (mainly the bisimidazolium linkers, methylene/ethylene) are the main factors determining both reactivity and synthetic difficulties of the products reported.

A theoretical determination of the electronic spectrum of Methylenecyclopropene

1996

The vertical electronic spectrum of methylenecyclopropene, the prototype of the nonalternant hydrocarbons known as fulvenes, has been studied using multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory. The calculations comprise three valence states and the 3s, 3p, and 3d members of the Rydberg series converging to the first π ionization limit. Vertical excitation energies to three valence states are found at 4.13, 6.12, and 6.82 eV. The second of them corresponds to an excitation from the highest occupied σ orbital to a π* orbital, while the other two are π → π* excitations. The third transition gives rise to the most intense feature in the electronic spectrum. The results are rationalized…

Time-monitoring sensor based on oxygen diffusion in an indicator/polymer matrix

2013

Abstract A time-monitoring sensor based on the oxidation of leuco methylene blue (LMB) to methylene blue (MB) was developed. The sensor changes its color from yellow to green in the presence of oxygen and was integrated into a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix. The diffusion of the oxygen in the polymer matrix as well as the oxygen uptake due to the oxidation reaction determines the time monitoring of the sensor. A physical model has been developed that accounts for both the diffusion as well as the oxidation reaction. For this purpose, the reaction kinetics was determined experimentally. Moreover, the diffusion coefficient of oxygen was determined and concentration profiles in the polymer matrix …

Herbicidally Active Derivatives of Aminomethylenebis-Phosphonic Acid-Mode of Action and Structure - Activity Relationship

1996

Abstract: (N-pyridylamino)methylenebisphosphonates exhibit strong herbicidal activity which may be reversed by supplementation of the growth media with aromatic amino acids. They appeare to be the inhibitors of aromatic amino acids biosynthesis acting as inhibitors of DAHP synthase the first enzyme of shikimate pathway. Over 40 analogues of these acids were synthesized in order to determine the structure-activity relationship.

Mode of action of herbicidal derivatives of aminomethylenebisphosphonic acid. Part II. Reversal of herbicidal action by aromatic amino acids

1997

The herbicidal action of N-pyridylaminomethylenebisphosphonic acids is accompanied by an impairment of anthocyanin biosynthesis. This suggests that they might act as inhibitors of some steps in aromatic amino acid biosynthesis. Herbicidal effects were reversed by aromatic amino acids using both bacterial and plant models, a finding that strongly supports this hypothesis. Structural features of these compounds suggest the sixth enzyme in the shikimate pathway 5-enol-pyruvoylshikimate-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase as a possible target, since a strong structural similarity exists between aminomethylenebisphosphonic acid and an inhibitor of EPSP synthase, the herbicide glyphosate. This is, howeve…

Phytochemical constituents and chemosystematic significance of Pulicaria jaubertii E.Gamal-Eldin (Asteraceae)

2018

Abstract The chemical characterization of methylene chloride/methanol (1:1) extract of the air-dried whole medicinal plant, Pulicaria jaubertii E. Gamal-Eldin, led to isolation and identification of two new hydroquinone compounds; 2-(2-acetoxy propyl), 5-methyl hydroquinone (1) and 2-(2-hydroxy propyl), 5-methyl hydroquinone-4-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), four known flavonols (3-6) and 7 known dihydroflavonols (7-13). The structures were established depending upon comprehensive analysis of the NMR, IR and HR/EI-MS data. Herein, compounds 6, and 10-13 were isolated for the first time from this plant. The chemotaxonomic significance of the isolated flavonoids from P. jaubertii comparing with th…

FT-IR spectroscopic investigation of bacterial cell envelopes from Zymomonas mobilis which have different surface hydrophobicities

2013

Abstract Changes in the cell envelope composition of bacteria Zymomonas mobilis 113S which resulted in varied cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) were examined using FT-IR-spectroscopy and conventional methods of biochemical analysis. Significant differences in all analyses were detected between hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds in the envelopes of Z. mobilis . A significant positive linear relationship ( P Z. mobilis and the ratio of absorbance band intensities assigned to the CH 2 and CH 3 vibrations from lipids as well as the asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of these methylene and methyl groups. Differences were also seen between the ratio of band absorbances arising from…
