Mechanical Bistable Structures for Microrobotics and Mesorobotics from Microfabrication to Additive Manufacturing

2018

International audience; The use of mechanical bistable structures in the design of microrobots and mesorobots has many advantages especially for flexible robotic structures. However, depending on the fabrication technology used, the adequacy of theoretical and experimental mechanical behaviors can vary widely. In this paper, we present the manufacturing results of bistable structures made with two extensively used contemporary technologies: MEMS and FDM additive manufacturing. Key issues of these fabrication technologies are discussed in the context of microrobotics and mesorobotics applications.

Fast photoconduction in the highly ordered columnar phase of a discotic liquid crystal

1994

THE search for organic materials suitable for electronic applica-tions dates back to the early 1950s. But the only organic systems known so far to show electronic charge-carrier mobilities comparable to the amorphous inorganic semiconductors that are the main-stay of the microelectronics industry are zone-refined organic single crystals1–4. Single crystals are difficult and costly to process, however, and are not suitable for device applications. Here we show that a highly ordered columnar (stacked) phase of disk-like organic molecules can exhibit high mobilities for photoinduced charge carriers, of the order of 0.1 cm2 V-1 s-1—higher than for any organic material other than single-crystal …

Optofluidic taming of a colloidal dimer with a silicon nanocavity

2014

International audience; We report here the optical trapping of a heterogeneous colloidal dimer above a photonic crystal nanocavity used as an on-chip optical tweezer. The trapped dimer consists of a cluster of two dielectric microbeads of different sizes linked by van der Waals forces. The smallest bead, 1 μm in diameter, is observed to be preferentially trapped by the nanotweezer, leaving the second bead untrapped. The rotational nature of the trapped dimer Brownian motion is first evidenced. Then, in the presence of a fluid flow, control of its orientation and rotation is achieved. The whole system is found to show high rotational degrees of freedom, thereby acting as an effective flow-se…

Imaging the Local Density of States of Optical Corrals

2002

International audience; This paper reports the experimental observation, at optical frequencies, of the electromagnetic local density of states established by nanostructures corresponding to the recently introduced concept of optical corral [G. Colas des Francs et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 4950 (2001)]. The images obtained by a scanning near-field optical microscope under specific operational conditions are found in agreement with the theoretical maps of the optical local density of states. A clear functionality of detection by the scanning near-field optical microscope is thereby identified since the theoretical maps are computed without including any specific tip model.

Photon antibunching in the optical near field

2010

International audience; We show that a combination of the field-susceptibility technique with the optical Bloch equations gives access to the temporal evolution of the populations and coherences of any quantum system placed in the optical near field of a nanostructure. In particular, we show that the near-field evanescent states, confined around dielectric or plasmonic particles, can be used to modify and control the photon statistics of the quantum system. This theoretical scheme leads to second-order autocorrelation functions in good agreement with recent experimental measurements performed with nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond nanocrystals placed in interaction with gold nanoparticles.

Launching propagating surface plasmon polaritons by a single carbon nanotube dipolar emitter.

2011

International audience; We report on the excitation of propagating surface plasmon polaritons in thin metal films by a single emitter. Upon excitation in the visible regime, individual semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes are shown to act as directional near-infrared point dipole sources launching propagating surface plasmons mainly along the direction of the nanotube axis. Plasmon excitation and propagation is monitored in Fourier and real space by leakage radiation microscopy and is modeled by rigorous theoretical calculations. Coupling to plasmons almost completely reshapes the emission of nanotubes both spatially and with respect to polarization as compared to photoluminescence…

Technology Impact on Neutron-Induced Effects in SDRAMs : A Comparative Study

2021

International audience; This study analyses the response of synchronous dynamic random access memories to neutron irradiation. Three different generations of the same device with different node sizes (63, 72, and 110 nm) were characterized under an atmospheric-like neutron spectrum at the ChipIr beamline in the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories, UK. The memories were tested with a reduced refresh rate to expose more single-event upsets and under similar conditions provided by a board specifically developed for this type of study in test facilities. The board has also been designed to be used as a nanosatellite payload in order to perform similar tests. The neutron-induced failures were studi…

Single-Event Effects in the Peripheral Circuitry of a Commercial Ferroelectric Random Access Memory

2018

International audience; This paper identifies the failure modes of a commercial 130-nm ferroelectric random access memory. The devices were irradiated with heavy-ion and pulsed focused X-ray beams. Various failure modes are observed, which generate characteristic error patterns, affecting isolated bits, words, groups of pages, and sometimes entire regions of the memory array. The underlying mechanisms are discussed.

Heavy-Ion-Induced Degradation in SiC Schottky Diodes : Incident Angle and Energy Deposition Dependence

2017

International audience; Heavy-ion-induced degradation in the reverse leakage current of SiC Schottky power diodes exhibits a strong dependence on the ion angle of incidence. This effect is studied experimentally for several different bias voltages applied during heavy-ion exposure. In addition, TCAD simulations are used to give insight on the physical mechanisms involved.

Detector characterization and first coincidence tests of a Compton telescope based on LaBr3 crystals and SiPMs

2011

International audience; A Compton telescope for dose monitoring in hadron therapy consisting of several layers of continuous LaBr3 crystals coupled to silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays is under development within the ENVISION project. In order to test the possibility of employing such detectors for the telescope, a detector head consisting of a continuous 16 mm×18 mm×5 mm LaBr3 crystal coupled to a SiPM array has been assembled and characterized, employing the SPIROC1 ASIC as readout electronics. The best energy resolution obtained at 511 keV is 6.5% FWHM and the timing resolution is 3.1 ns FWHM. A position determination method for continuous crystals is being tested, with promising res…
