Polymer-coated reversed-phase packings in high-performance liquid chromatography

1993

The synthesis and properties of polymer-coated RP stationary phases are reviewed. The sorbents are classified according to the method of synthesis. More flexibility in the tailoring of polymer-coated packings is noted. The impact of the polymer coating on the porosity of the oxides to be modified and their chromatographic properties is discussed.

The sanidic polyamide [NM-Ph(CO 2 R) 3 (CO 2 Me)-NMCO-Ph(OR) 2 CO] n (R=C 12 H 25 ) is studied. It is shown that this polymer has a biaxial structure with quasi 2-D long range translational correlations. The correlations in one direction are limited by the length of the molecule. The oriented regions are separated by regions in which the molecules are less oriented

A structural investigation is described of poly(L-lactic acid) by best fitting of powder X-ray diffraction patterns. The examined sample shows the already known pseudo-orthorhombic α-form, and it was possible to determine the location of the two 103 polymeric helices in the unit cell and the size distribution of the crystallites. Furthermore, a study is reported of the crystallization kinetics of the above cited polymer by light depolarization measurements in an optical microscope. The crystallization kinetic constants in bulk were evaluated in a temperature range (70–165°C) wider than that previously resulting from measurements of radial growth of spherulites.

Free-standing smectic LC elastomer films

2001

ABSTRACTWe probe the mesophase transitions and layer structures in thin ordered smectic liquid crystalline elastomer films by means of x-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Oriented elastomer films of submicrometer thickness are produced by crosslinking freely suspended smectic polymer films. After crosslinking, the mesomorphism is similar to that of the precursor polymer. Smectic layers align parallel to the film plane. The layer spacing increases with temperature in the SmC* phase while it decays above the SmC*-SmA transition.

Poling Induced Mass Transport in Thin Polymer Films

2013

In this study we report investigation of the polymer film morphology modifications during their corona poling for fabrication of nonlinear optically (NLO) active materials. We demonstrate that at certain poling conditions surface and spatial inhomogeneities in the poled area of the sample appear. Densities of the inhomogeinities depend on the strength of the poling field, the sample temperature during the poling, and the prepoling conditions. Optimization of the poling conditions directed toward avoiding surface modifications enables us to increase the overall observable effective nonlinearity of the sample up to 10 times. To investigate, understand, and eventually explain the formation of …

Peptide–Membrane Interactions Monitored by Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging: A Study Case of Transportan 10

2021

The interest on detailed analysis of peptide-membrane interactions is of great interest in both fundamental and applied sciences as these may relate to both functional and pathogenic events. Such interactions are highly dynamic and spatially heterogeneous, making the investigation of the associated phenomena highly complex. The specific properties of membranes and peptide structural details, together with environmental conditions, may determine different events at the membrane interface, which will drive the fate of the peptide-membrane system. Here, we use an experimental approach based on the combination of spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy methods to characterize the interactions …

Enzyme Cytochemistry of Fungi

1973

Summary The results of a great number of investigationshave shown that enzyme cytochemical methods, which have been developed for the study of animal and human histology and cytology, can be successfully used for the study of enzyme patterns in yeasts, moulds, slime moulds, dermatophytes, phytopathogenic fungi and basidiomycetes. Whereas with the older, relatively unspecific procedures only presence or absence of enzymes could be studied, improved techniques allow the examination of the intracellular localization of enzymes under the light and especially the electron microscope. The results of those investigations are described together with methodological aspects of cultivation, incubation…

Progress in polymeric material for hydrogen storage application in middle conditions

2014

Hydrogen sorption using a manganese oxide anchored to PEEK (Poly(ether-ether-keton)) matrix was studied. The functionalization process and the obtained results on hydrogen storage capability of the synthesized polymer are reported. The functionalised polymer was characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Volumetric Hydrogen sorption measurements. Different synthesis conditions in terms of precursor concentration and reaction time were used and the direct correlation between manganese oxide percentage and hydrogen storage capability was confirmed. In this way different powders were synthesised. It is assumed that the sample with 78 …

Injectable in situ forming hydrogels based on natural and synthetic polymers for potential application in cartilage repair

2015

In this work we prepared two new hyaluronic acid (HA) based in situ forming hydrogels for the potential treatment of articular cartilage damages. In particular the amino derivative of HA (HA-EDA) and its graft copolymer with α-elastin (HA-EDA-g-α-elastin) were crosslinked, in mild physiological conditions via Michael-type addition, with α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) derivatized with divinylsulfone (DV). The swelling and degradation profile of the obtained hydrogels as well as the metabolic activity of incorporated bovine articular chondrocytes were investigated. Histological analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to analyze the morphology of cells …

Self-assembly of fluorescent diimidazolium salts: tailor properties of the aggregates changing alkyl chain features

2016

Searching for new fluorescent organic salts to be used in biomedical and electrochemical field, we conjugated properties of imidazolium salts with the ones of naphthalene diimide core and we obtained some N,N′-bis-(1-alkyl-3-propylimidazolium)naphthalene diimide diiodides. We took into account alkyl chains going from hexyl to dodecyl, as well as hydrogenated and fluorinated alkyl tails. After determination of their thermal behaviour by differential scanning calorimetry, concentration-, and temperature-dependent spectroscopic studies (UV-vis and fluorescence) were performed evidencing the occurrence of isodesmic and enthalpy-driven self-assembly processes. Properties of aggregates were also …
