Dehydration of Fructose to 5-HMF over Acidic TiO2 Catalysts

Different solid sulfonic titania-based catalysts were investigated for the hydrothermal dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). The catalytic behavior of the materials was evaluated in terms of fructose conversion and selectivity to 5-HMF. The surface and structural properties of the catalysts were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption isotherms, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and acid capacity measurements. Cavitation corrosion and repassivation kinetics of titanium in a heavy brine LiBr solution evaluated by using electrochemical techniques and Confocal…

The cavitation corrosion behaviour of commercially pure Grade 2 titanium in a 992 g/l LiBr solution has been investigated at 25 °C using an ultrasound device. Cavitation was found to have more influence on the anodic branch than on the cathodic branch, shifting the corrosion potential, Ecorr, and the OCP value towards more negative potentials, and increasing the corrosion current density, icorr, by six times. The repassivation kinetics of Grade 2 titanium have also been studied in the 992 g/l LiBr solution, at 25 °C and various applied potentials, using cavitation to damage the electrode surface. Synthesis of Mesoporous Supraparticles on Superamphiphobic Surfaces

A method for mesoporous supraparticle synthesis on superamphiphobic surfaces is designed. Therefore, supraparticles assembled with nanoparticles are synthesized by the evaporation of nanoparticle dispersion drops on the superamphiphobic surface. For synthesis, no further purification is required and no organic solvents are wasted. Moreover, by changing the conditions such as drop size and concentration, supraparticles of different sizes, compositions, and architectures are fabricated.

Growth of metal/oxide periodic multilayer : relation between structure and electrical behaviour in systems based on titanium and tungsten

Periodic multilayers have found many applications in the fields of optics, mechanics or electronics. However, few studies focus on the electrical responses of the metal/oxide periodic structures versus temperature. The interest of this work was focused on the characterization of the multilayers and their electrical properties versus temperature. In TiO/Ti/TiO/TiO2 and WO/W/WO/WO3 systems produced by the reactive gas pulsing process, sample structures were established by transmission electron microscopy for sublayers thicknesses between 1.3 and 50.8 nm. Adaptive response of osteoblasts grown on a titanium surface: morphology, cell proliferation and stress protein synthesis.

Titanium is one of the most widely used biomaterials in orthopaedic, dental and trauma surgery. Superficial adhesion and cell proliferation represent the first steps of cell-biomaterial interactions. The efficacy of this early phase influences the subsequent ability to differentiate, and hence the knowledge of these cell activities is important for studying and improving the biocompatibility of biomaterials. The aim of this study was to test the adaptive ability of osteoblastic cells grown on titanium surfaces, including morphologic, proliferative and adaptative aspects.

Microstructure and diversity of the bursa copulatrix wall in Tortricidae (Lepidoptera).

The inner surface and muscle structure of the bursa copulatrix are examined for the first time with Electron Microscopy in some representatives of the family Tortricidae (Lepidoptera). The internal microprotuberances reveal taxon dependent characters unstudied in the Lepidoptera until now. Acanthae occur in almost all taxa studied, whereas ctenidia and papillae are found only in representatives of Tortricinae and Olethreutinae, respectively. Muscles are radially arranged from the signa. Areas of muscle insertion on the bursal wall are not covered by other muscle fibers. Bloch Modes Coupling in Photonic Crystal Waveguides

We investigate the properties of Bloch modes inside a photonic crystal waveguide. By using simultaneously a near field optical microscope and a transmittance setup, we demonstrate that Bloch modes having different parity are coupled.

Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Reflection Scanning Microscopy

The Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope (PSTM) is the photon analogue to the Electron Scanning Tunneling Microscope (ESTM). It uses the evanescent field due to the total internal reflection (TIR) of a light beam in a prism modulated by a sample attached to the prism. The exponential decay of the evanescent field is characterized by the penetration depth dp and depends on the angle of incidence θ, the wavelength and polarization of the incident beam. Changes in intensity are monitored by a probe tip scanned over the surface, and the data are processed to generate an image of the sample.
