A quantitative assessment of the effect of distributor type on particle circulation

1997

Abstract Garncarek's quantitative index of inhomogeneity has been used to compare the effect of distributor type on the degree of uniformity of solids mixing in a gas-fluidized bed assessed by following a tracer particle using the technique of Positron Emission Particle Tracking. The bed was a sand of 475 μm diameter fluidized at 2 U mf and contained within a column of 150 mm diameter. A porous and perforated plate distributor are compared. The index shows that tracer locations are generally more homogeneously distributed throughout the vertical section of the bed with the porous plate distributor. Behaviour varies with height and horizontal sections of the bed show that there is little dif…

A look into the future of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe : an expert consultation

2021

How will the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic develop in the coming months and years? Based on an expert survey, we examine key aspects that are likely to influence COVID-19 in Europe. The future challenges and developments will strongly depend on the progress of national and global vaccination programs, the emergence and spread of variants of concern, and public responses to nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). In the short term, many people are still unvaccinated, VOCs continue to emerge and spread, and mobility and population mixing is expected to increase over the summer. Therefore, policies that lift restrictions too much and too early risk another damaging wave. This ch…

B-parameters for ΔS=2 supersymmetric operators

1998

We present a calculation of the matrix elements of the most general set of DeltaS=2 dimension-six four-fermion operators. The values of the matrix elements are given in terms of the corresponding B-parameters. Our results can be used in many phenomenological applications, since the operators considered here give important contributions to K^0--K^0bar mixing in several extensions of the Standard Model (supersymmetry, left-right symmetric models, multi-Higgs models etc.). The determination of the matrix elements improves the accuracy of the phenomenological analyses intended to put bounds on basic parameters of the different models, as for example the pattern of the sfermion mass matrices. Th…

Determination of N -nitrosamines in cosmetic products by vortex-assisted reversed-phase dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and liquid chromatog…

2018

A new analytical method for the simultaneous determination of trace levels of seven prohibited N-nitrosamines (N-nitrosodimethylamine, N-nitrosoethylmethylamine, N-nitrosopyrrolidine, N-nitrosodiethylamine, N-nitrosopiperidine, N-nitrosomorpholine, and N-nitrosodiethanolamine) in cosmetic products has been developed. The method is based on vortex-assisted reversed-phase dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction, which allows the extraction of highly polar compounds, followed by liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. The variables involved in the extraction process were studied to obtain the highest enrichment factor. Under the selected conditions, 75 μL of water as extraction solvent …

Magnetic and structural properties of the nanostructured Fe 1–x Si x system with x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3, mechanical alloyed and sintered

2007

The magnetic and structural properties of the nanostructured system Fe1–xSix with x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 were studied by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, and Mossbauer Spectrometry (MS). The samples were prepared by compacting and sintering at two temperatures, 900 and 1000 uC, from powders obtained by means of two procedures: by elemental mixing of Fe and Si powders and by mechanical alloying (MA). For samples obtained from mixed powders and sintered at 900 and 1000 uC, XRD and MS show the presence of pure iron and silicon, indicating that these conditions do not favor alloying, except for the sample with 30 at.% and 1000 uC, for which, besides of iron and silicon patterns, the DO3 and FeSi pha…

On the scavenging of SO2 by large and small rain drops: V. A wind tunnel and theoretical study of the desorption of SO2 from water drops containing S…

1993

An experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to investigate the rate of desorption of SO2 from water drops falling at terminal velocity in air. The experiments were carried out in the Mainz vertical wind tunnel in which water drops of various sizes containing S(IV) in various concentrations were freely suspended in the vertical airstream of the tunnel. The results of these experiments were compared with the predictions of three theoretical models, and with the experiments of Walceket al. This comparison shows that the predictions of the diffusion model of Kronig and Brink in the formulation given by Walcek and Pruppacher agree well with the experimental results for all relevan…

The pianigiani-yorke measure for topological markov chains

1997

We prove the existence of a Pianigiani-Yorke measure for a Markovian factor of a topological Markov chain. This measure induces a Gibbs measure in the limit set. The proof uses the contraction properties of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius operator.

On a representation theorem for finitely exchangeable random vectors

2016

A random vector $X=(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ with the $X_i$ taking values in an arbitrary measurable space $(S, \mathscr{S})$ is exchangeable if its law is the same as that of $(X_{\sigma(1)}, \ldots, X_{\sigma(n)})$ for any permutation $\sigma$. We give an alternative and shorter proof of the representation result (Jaynes \cite{Jay86} and Kerns and Sz\'ekely \cite{KS06}) stating that the law of $X$ is a mixture of product probability measures with respect to a signed mixing measure. The result is "finitistic" in nature meaning that it is a matter of linear algebra for finite $S$. The passing from finite $S$ to an arbitrary one may pose some measure-theoretic difficulties which are avoided by our p…

QUANTITATIVE CONVERGENCE RATES FOR SUBGEOMETRIC MARKOV CHAINS

2015

We provide explicit expressions for the constants involved in the characterisation of ergodicity of subgeometric Markov chains. The constants are determined in terms of those appearing in the assumed drift and one-step minorisation conditions. The results are fundamental for the study of some algorithms where uniform bounds for these constants are needed for a family of Markov kernels. Our results accommodate also some classes of inhomogeneous chains.
