Indentation test as a tool for monitoring the solidification process during injection molding

An inline method for monitoring the solidi-fication process during the injection molding of semicrystalline polymers is demonstrated. The method has been applied to various poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(buthylene terephthalate) (PBT) samples. The technique is based on a simple device by which an additional ejector pin is pushed onto the injection-molded part with a fixed force at different times during the solidification phase while the mold remains closed. Apparent interfacial shear strength of short-flax-fiber/starch acetate composites

Abstract The paper deals with an indirect industry-friendly method for identification of the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) in a fully bio-based composite. The IFSS of flax fiber/starch acetate is evaluated by a modified Bowyer and Bader method based on an analysis of the stress–strain curve of a short-fiber-reinforced composite in tension. A shear lag model is developed for the tensile stress–strain response of short-fiber-reinforced composites allowing for an elastic-perfectly plastic stress transfer. Effect of nano zinc oxide as UV stabilizer on the weathering performance of wood-polyethylene composite

Abstract In this study, the effect of using nano-sized zinc oxide (ZnO) particles on the enhancement if the degradation resistance of wood-high density polyethylene (HDPE) composite was investigated through artificial weathering. Samples with different amounts of ZnO mixing ratio (0, 1, 2, and 4 wt%) were manufactured using an internal mixer followed by compression molding. The prepared samples were then exposed to the artificial weathering process in a QUV weatherometer. The weathering behavior of samples was characterized using tensile strength, contact angle analysis, colorimetry, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and FE-SEM. Mechanical behavior of polylactic acid/polycaprolactone porous layered functional composites

Analysis of the packing stage in injection molding of thermoplastic polymers

Injection molding tests were performed on a Ny 66 resin. Data are presented on the mass entering the mold during the packing-holding stage as a function of filling flow rate and holding time. The experimental results are discussed on the basis of a simple model of the packing-holding stage. Only a small part of the density increase due to crystallization seems to be compensated by extra flow during the packing-holding stage.

Morphology, Rheological and Mechanical Properties of Isotropic and Anisotropic PP/rPET/GnP Nanocomposite Samples

The effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) on the morphology, rheological, and mechanical properties of isotropic and anisotropic polypropylene (PP)/recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET)-based nanocomposite are reported. All the samples were prepared by melt mixing. PP/rPET and PP/rPET/GnP isotropic sheets were prepared by compression molding, whereas the anisotropic fibers were spun using a drawing module of a capillary viscometer. The results obtained showed that the viscosity of the blend is reduced by the presence of GnP due to the lubricating effect of the graphene platelets. However, the Cox–Merz rule is not respected.
