Diagnosis of pregnancy-associated venous thromboembolism - position paper of the Working Group in Women’s Health of the Society of Thrombosis and Hae…
2016
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major cause of maternal morbidity during pregnancy and the postpartum period. However, because there is a lack of adequate study data, management strategies for pregnancy-associated VTE must be deduced from observational stu-dies and extrapolated from recommendations for non-pregnant patients. In this review, the members of the Working Group in Women's Health of the Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (GTH) have summarised the evidence that is currently available in the literature to provide a practical approach for treating pregnancy-associated VTE. Because heparins do not cross the placenta, weight-adjusted therapeutic-dose low molecular weight heparin …
Influence of different soluble dietary fibers on the bioaccessibility of the minor Fusarium mycotoxin beauvericin.
2011
Abstract Beauvericin (BEA) is a bioactive compound produced by the secondary metabolism of several Fusarium strains and is known to have various biological activities. This study investigated the bioaccessibility of the BEA tested in concentrations of 5 and 25 mg/L, in a model solution and in wheat crispy breads elaborated with different natural binding compounds as the soluble alimentary dietary fibers β-1,3 glucan, chitosan low molecular weight (L.M.W.), chitosan medium molecular weight (M.M.W.), fructooligosaccharides (FOS), galattomannan, inulin and pectin, added at concentrations of 1% and 5%. The bioaccessibility was determinated by employing a simulated gastrointestinal digestion tha…
Niedermolekulares Heparin bei Frühgeborenen mit hereditären Risikofaktoren und venösen Thrombosen
2006
We describe the use of low molecular weight heparin to treat venous thrombosis in two very low-birth-weight pre-term infants (GA: 30 and 27 weeks) both with genetic and acquired prothrombotic risk factors. Initially both infants were treated with unfractionated heparin. Since in one infant no effect on the thrombus size was observed and in the other infant there was an increase in size, the anticoagulation therapy was switched to subcutaneously injected low molecular heparin (Enoxaparin). During enoxaparin therapy the anti-Xa-level was carefully monitored and dosages were adjusted accordingly. Partial resolution of the thrombosis was achieved in both infants during enoxaparin therapy. No cl…
Tailoring the physicochemical properties of core-crosslinked polymeric micelles for pharmaceutical applications.
2016
To optimally exploit the potential of (tumor-) targeted nanomedicines, platform technologies are needed in which physicochemical and pharmaceutical properties can be tailored according to specific medical needs and applications. We here systematically customized the properties of core-crosslinked polymeric micelles (CCPM). The micelles were based on mPEG-b-pHPMAmLacn (i.e. methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly[N-(2-hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide-lactate]), similar to the block copolymer composition employed in CriPec® docetaxel, which is currently in phase I clinical trials. The CCPM platform was tailored with regard to size (30 to 100 nm), nanocarrier degradation (1 month to 1 year) and drug…
Drug insight: novel small molecules and drugs for immunosuppression.
2006
Gastrointestinal diseases can result from the inadequate or excessive response of the immune system to self or innocuous antigens. Moreover, the physiologic activation of the immune system against non-self antigens is a major clinical problem in liver organ transplantation. At present, many drugs are available that suppress the activation of the immune system, although most of the currently used immunosuppressive drugs lack specificity in terms of their molecular targets and, therefore, have the potential to generate numerous side effects. The advances that have been made in understanding the molecular events that underlie the activation of the immune system have led to the development of a…
Assessing the risk to health care staff from long-term exposure to anticancer drugs--the case of monoclonal antibodies.
2010
Today the occupational health and safety risk involved when handling most anticancer drugs is well recognized and, as a result of regulatory requirements, safety measures have been established. There is little knowledge about the occupational hazard posed by handling monoclonal antibodies assigned to ATC Class L01XC. The aim of our study was to evaluate the occupational risk of monoclonal antibodies. Using the information obtained in a systematic review of the literature, the potentially dangerous properties of the active drug substances were assessed using a specially devised algorithm. As a result, all monoclonal antibodies in question were categorized as substances with developmental to…

A method for eluting DNA in a wide range of molecular weights from agarose gels
1991
We have developed a simple and rapid method for recovering DNAs of a wide range of molecular weights from agarose gels. A DNA-containing gel slice is placed on a Parafilm sheet in the center of a circular (positive) electrode and covered with a drop of buffer, while a linear (negative) electrode is placed on the top of the gel and driven about 1 mm into the gel itself. When a continuous current is applied, the DNA migrates into the buffer toward the circular electrode. We have obtained almost total recovery of DNAs up to 10 kb in size. Our method may also be used, under appropriate conditions, for higher molecular weight DNAs. The yield and all the biological assays performed on the DNAs ob…
A new neuraminic acid derivative and three types of glycopeptides isolated from the Cuvierian tubules of the sea cucumber Holothuria forskali
1973
The Cuvierian tubules of Holothuria forskali Della Chiaje, a sea cucumber found in the Adriatic Sea, were investigated with regard to their carbohydrate moieties. From a Pronase digest of these tubules three types of carbohydrate units were isolated and characterized. 1. A high-molecular-weight glycopeptide fraction was shown to contain sulphated polyfucose, galactosamine, a uronic acid and a previously unknown neuraminic acid derivative. The sulphate was shown by i.r. analysis to be present as an O-ester. The carbohydrate unit was linked O-glycosidically to threonine and serine residues in the polypeptide chain. The hitherto unknown neuraminic acid derivative (Hf-neuraminic acid) was resis…
Monte Carlo simulation of DNA electrophoresis
1989
This paper describes an attempt to study the electrophoresis mobility of a DNA molecule in a gel by means of a Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the electrophoresis mobility mu can be well described by the empirical equation mu v kappa 1/N + kappa 2E2 with N being the number of monomers of the model chain and E being the applied field. For small E the data can merge into the linear response result mu = kappa 1/N. The paper also discusses necessary extensions of the present approach.
