The Andean puma (Puma concolor) has not been widely studied, particularly in reference to its semen characteristics. The aim of the present study was to define the morphometry of puma sperm heads and classify their subpopulations by cluster analysis. Samples were recovered postmortem from two epididymides from one animal and prepared for morphological observation after staining with the Hemacolor kit. Morphometric data were obtained from 581 spermatozoa using a CASA-Morph system, rendering 13 morphometric parameters. Biofilm development by clinical strains of non-pigmented rapidly growing mycobacteria

AbstractThe relationship between clinical significance of non-pigmented, rapidly growing mycobacteria (NPRGM), in vitro biofilm development and sliding motility was evaluated in this study. One hundred and sixty-eight clinical strains of NPRGM were included. Forty-one of these were clinically significant isolates. Biofilm was formed by 123 strains. Seventy-six biofilm-positive and 25 biofilm-negative strains showed sliding motility. There was a relationship between clinical significance and biofilm development (p <0.000 001), sliding motility (p 0.0037) and species (p <0.000 001). Background: Flavobacterium columnare (Bacteroidetes) is the causative agent of columnaris disease in farmed freshwater fish around the world. The bacterium forms three colony morphotypes (Rhizoid, Rough and Soft), but the differences of the morphotypes are poorly known. We studied the virulence of the morphotypes produced by F. columnare strain B067 in rainbow trout ( Onconrhynchus mykiss ) and used high-resolution scanning electron microscopy to identify the fine structures of the cells grown in liquid and on agar. The renin–angiotensin system in gastrointestinal functions

In this chapter, we describe the role played by classical and alternative renin–angiotensin system (RAS) in the physiological regulation of gastrointestinal functions. RAS modulates gut motility and mucosal functions, including secretion, fluid, and nutrient absorption. We focus mainly on the activation of angiotensin II type 1 and 2 receptors located on the smooth muscle and epithelial cells or on the enteric neurons. Few studies indicate that alternative RAS may counteract classical RAS functions. Although data on the enteric RAS system are still scarce, they encourage further investigations in consideration also of a potential involvement in gastrointestinal disorders.

We describe a whole-genome siRNA-based reverse genetics screen for defects in biogenesis and/or maintenance of the primary cilium, obtaining a global resource. We identify 112 candidate ciliogenesis and ciliopathy genes, including 44 components of the ubiquitin-proteasome system, 12 G-protein-coupled receptors, and 3 pre-mRNA processing factors (PRPF6, PRPF8 and PRPF31) mutated in autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa. Abstract Primary ciliary dyskinesia is a genetically inherited syndrome characterised by ciliary immotility or dysmotility. Deficiency in mucociliary clearance produces chronic respiratory infections from birth, male sterility by spermatozoid immotility and situs inversus in 40%–50% of patients (Kartagener's syndrome). Diagnosis is made by analysing ciliary motility with high-speed digital video and ciliary ultrastructure. The wide distribution and functions of the cilia in the body mean that this dysfunction can generate other ciliopathies apart from primary ciliary dyskinesia.

Overexpression of T-cadherin (T-cad) transcripts occurs in approximately 50% of human hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs). To elucidate T-cad functions in HCC, we examined T-cad protein expression in normal and tumoral human livers and hepatoma cell lines and investigated its influence on invasive potential of HCC using RNA interference silencing of T-cad expression in Mahlavu cells. Respiratory infection is a major cause of morbidity after general anaesthesia. Impairment of respiratory ciliary beat frequency (CBF) by different stress factors causes a decrease in mucus transport rate (MTR). We have tested the effect of different concentrations of oxygen on CBF of human respiratory epithelium in a prospective, randomized, in vitro study. Samples of superficial mucosa of the inferior nasal turbinates of 20 non-smoking healthy volunteers were harvested and exposed to three different oxygen environments (group I = 21% oxygen, group II = 60% oxygen and group III = 95% oxygen) for 2 h.
