New neurons use Slit-Robo signaling to migrate through the glial meshwork and approach a lesion for functional regeneration
2018
Appropriate positioning of new neurons in the brain promotes post-stroke functional recovery.
Dynamic Changes in Ultrastructure of the Primary Cilium in Migrating Neuroblasts in the Postnatal Brain
2019
New neurons, referred to as neuroblasts, are continuously generated in the ventricular-subventricular zone of the brain throughout an animal's life. These neuroblasts are characterized by their unique potential for proliferation, formation of chain-like cell aggregates, and long-distance and high-speed migration through the rostral migratory stream (RMS) toward the olfactory bulb (OB), where they decelerate and differentiate into mature interneurons. The dynamic changes of ultrastructural features in postnatal-born neuroblasts during migration are not yet fully understood. Here we report the presence of a primary cilium, and its ultrastructural morphology and spatiotemporal dynamics, in mig…
Detachment of Chain-Forming Neuroblasts by Fyn-Mediated Control of cell–cell Adhesion in the Postnatal Brain
2018
In the rodent olfactory system, neuroblasts produced in the ventricular-subventricular zone of the postnatal brain migrate tangentially in chain-like cell aggregates toward the olfactory bulb (OB) through the rostral migratory stream (RMS). After reaching the OB, the chains are dissociated and the neuroblasts migrate individually and radially toward their final destination. The cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling cell–cell adhesion during this detachment remain unclear. Here we report that Fyn, a nonreceptor tyrosine kinase, regulates the detachment of neuroblasts from chains in the male and female mouse OB. By performing chemical screening andin vivoloss-of-function and gain-of-f…

RS1 (Rsc1A1) deficiency limits cerebral SGLT1 expression and delays brain damage after experimental traumatic brain injury
2018
Acute cerebral lesions are associated with dysregulation of brain glucose homeostasis. Previous studies showed that knockdown of Na+ -D-glucose cotransporter SGLT1 impaired outcome after middle cerebral artery occlusion and that widely expressed intracellular RS1 (RSC1A1) is involved in transcriptional and post-translational down-regulation of SGLT1. In the present study, we investigated whether SGLT1 is up-regulated during traumatic brain injury (TBI) and whether removal of RS1 in mice (RS1-KO) influences SGLT1 expression and outcome. Unexpectedly, brain SGLT1 mRNA in RS1-KO was similar to wild-type whereas it was increased in small intestine and decreased in kidney. One day after TBI, SGL…
Reliability and validity of the Finnish version of the motor observation questionnaire for teachers.
2017
Objectives: Observational screening instruments are often used as an effective, economical first step in the identification of children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). The aim was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Finnish version of the Motor Observation Questionnaire for Teachers (MOQ-T-FI).Methods: The psychometric properties were tested using two separate samples (S1: age range 6-12, M 9y 5mo, females 101, males 92; S2: age range 6-9, M 7y 7mo, females 404, males 446). Teachers completed the MOQ-T-Fl in both samples, and in sample 2 teachers' ratings were compared to student's performance on the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-Second Edition (MABC…
Qualitative differences in the exploration of upright and upside-down faces in four-month-old infants : An eye-movement study
2006
The goal of this study was to test if apprentice readers (6-7 to 7-8 years old) and beginner readers (8-9 to 10-11 years old) perceive syllabic units in written words. The paradigm of illusory conjunctions was used because it can determine the infra-lexical units identified at the first steps of the written stimuli process. Two experiments were conducted on children from the first (6-7 years old) to the last years (10-11 years old) of the learning-to-read process. Results have shown that children perceive syllables in letter sequences as soon as the end of the first year of the learning-to-read process. The perception of these units is the result of two information sources: the syllabic pho…

Nitric oxide modulates striatal neuronal activity via soluble guanylyl cyclase: an in vivo microiontophoretic study in rats.
2003
It is now well established that nitric oxide (NO) acts as a neuromodulator in the central nervous system. To assess the role of NO in modulating striatal activity, single-unit recording was combined with iontophoresis to study presumed spiny projection neurons in urethane-anesthetized male rats. Striatal neurons recorded were essentially quiescent and were therefore activated to fire by the iontophoretic administration of glutamate, pulsed in cycles of 30 sec on and 40 sec off. In this study, iontophoresis of 3-morpholinosydnonimine hydrochloride (SIN 1), a nitric oxide donor, produced reproducible, current-dependent inhibition of glutamate-induced excitation in 12 of 15 striatal neurons, r…
Effects of different physical therapy programs on perceived health status in acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients: a …
2017
To evaluate the repercussion of different physical therapy interventions on the perceived health status of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients during acute exacerbation.Randomized controlled trial. Patients were assigned to: control group (standard medical treatment), controlled breathing + range of motion exercises group or Resistance exercises group. Perceived health status was assessed at baseline and discharge using the EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D) questionnaire. Clinical profile of patients was evaluated at baseline for descriptive purposes.Ninety patients were randomized into the groups. Perceived health status improved significantly in all groups. Significant differences were…
