A Non-Local Mode-I Cohesive Model for Ascending Thoracic Aorta Dissections (ATAD)

2018

This paper presents a non-local interface mechanical model to describe aortic dissection. In this regard, the mode-I debonding problem based on a cohesive zone modeling is endowed with non-local terms to include long-range interactions that are present in multi-layered biological tissue. Such non-local effects are related to the collagen fibers that transmit forces between non-adjacent elements. Numerical simulations are provided with different values of the non-local parameters in order to show the effect of the non-locality during the debonding processes.

Effectiveness of Preservative Treatments on Coloured Ruditic Building Stones

2009

:  The dark grey Breccia di Billiemi and the Ammonitico Rosso of Piana degli Albanesi, two coloured stones widely used in monuments both outdoor and indoor in Sicily, undergo significant decay as effect of weathering: colour change and development of surface microcracks which affect not only the chromatic aspect but also the state of aggregation. In a previous study (Fracture and Failure of Natural Building Stones, 2006, Springer, Dordrecht, The Netherlands: 329), such effects were successfully reproduced on laboratory samples by means of artificial accelerated weathering and the different response of veins and grains to the ageing agents was related to the microstructure of stones. In this…

Strain Measurement on Composites: Effects due to Strain Gauge Misalignment

2011

The present work analyses the errors affecting the strains measured by misaligned strain gauges installed on orthotropic-composite laminae. Various analytical relationships are derived showing that, besides the fibre and strain gauge orientations, the misalignment error in unidirectional off-axis orthotropic composite samples depends also on the lamina stiffness properties (E(1), E(2), nu(12), G(12)). If the fibres are aligned with the loading axis, it is found that the higher Poisson's ratio nu(12) is the only elastic property influencing the misalignment error. Experimental results are shown confirming the theoretical predictions.

Complex composite structures with integrated piezoelectric transducers

2016

International audience; Nowadays, in different industrial fields as transport or aerospace, a research effort is conducted to reduce the structural weight. One of the most promising solutions is the use of composite structures due to their high stiffness, their low mass density and their low damping factor. At the same time, there is an intensification of the operational dynamic environment and an increase of durability requirements. These different expectations seem to be contradictory. One solution to manage these points is to design and manufacture smart composite structures with a fully distributed set of integrated piezoelec-tric transducers. These structures are able to modify their m…

Progress in the Development of CdTe and CdZnTe Semiconductor Radiation Detectors for Astrophysical and Medical Applications

2009

Over the last decade, cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe) wide band gap semiconductors have attracted increasing interest as X-ray and gamma ray detectors. Among the traditional high performance spectrometers based on silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge), CdTe and CdZnTe detectors show high detection efficiency and good room temperature performance and are well suited for the development of compact and reliable detection systems. In this paper, we review the current status of research in the development of CdTe and CdZnTe detectors by a comprehensive survey on the material properties, the device characteristics, the different techniques for improving the overall detector…

Exciton and multiexciton optical properties of single InAs/GaAs site-controlled quantum dots

2013

We have studied the optical properties of InAs site-controlled quantum dots (SCQDs) grown on pre-patterned GaAs substrates. Since InAs nucleates preferentially on the lithography motifs, the location of the resulting QDs is determined by the pattern, which is fabricated by local oxidation nanolithography. Optical characterization has been performed on such SCQDs to study the fundamental and excited states. At the ground state different exciton complex transitions of about 500 μeV linewidth have been identified and the fine structure splitting of the neutral exciton has been determined (≈65 μeV). The observed electronic structure covers the demands of future quantum information technologies.…
