Abstract This text departs from a contradictory claim in deaf studies and sound studies: both disciplines describe a hierarchical regime of the sensible – visuocentrism and audiocentrism – which they try to counter with conceptualisations as “acoustemology” or “deaf gain.” However, as we argue, they both thereby erect what they claim to overcome: a sensual regime that privileges one sense over another and a restricted conception of subjectivity deriving from it. First, we draw a philosophical line in the critique of sensual regimes. Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurologic disorder characterized by progressively worsening rigidity and spasms of the axial and limb muscles. Dyspnea has been recently recognized as a common symptom in SPS,1 and life-threatening respiratory crises have been occasionally reported and suspected to be responsible for sudden death in these patients.2,3 The pathophysiologic mechanisms of these respiratory manifestations remain unclear. Some authors have hypothesized that rigidity and/or spasm of the muscles of the trunk could prevent normal rib cage movements and excursion of the diaphragm.1

Pro gradun tarkoituksena on selvittää oululaisten ja raahelaisten kauppa-alusten miehistön nuorimpien jäsenten merille lähtöä ja urakehitystä ensimmäisen viiden vuoden aikana. Työn tavoitteena on selvittää, minkä ikäisiä olivat nuoret merimiehet, millaiset sosiaaliset lähtökohdat heillä oli, miksi he pestautuivat, millaista elämä oli laivalla ja miten heidän uransa kehittyi jatkossa. Tarkastelu kohdistuu viiden vuoden jaksolle vuosina 1858-1863 ja mahdollisuuksien mukaan joidenkin miesten uraa on seurattu pidemmälti. Tutkimus edustaa kollektiivibiografista ja mikrohistoriallista tutkimusotetta. Tutkittavasta joukosta, 75 nuoresta miehestä, on luotu tietokantoja, joiden avulla selvitetään, m…
