Air pollution and childhood leukaemia: a nationwide case-control study in Italy
2013
Objectives Leukaemia is the most common cancer in children, but its aetiology is still poorly understood. We tested the hypothesis that traffic-related air pollution is associated with paediatric leukaemia because of chronic exposure to several potential carcinogens. Methods The Italian SETIL study (Study on the aetiology of lymphohematopoietic malignancies in children) was conducted in 14 Italian regions. All incident cases of leukaemia in children aged ≤10 years from these regions (period 1998–2001) were eligible for enrolment. Two controls per case, matched on birth date, gender and region of residence were randomly selected from the local population registries. Exposure assessment at bi…
Effects of heat treatments on the properties of copper phthalocyanine films deposited by glow-discharge-induced sublimation
2006
Copper phthalocyanine films have been deposited by glow-discharge-induced sublimation. The films have undergone postdeposition heat treatments in air at 250 and 290 °C for different times, ranging from 30 min to 14 h. The properties of as-deposited and heated films have been investigated by different techniques in order to determine the effects of heat treatments on the film properties. Fourier transform infrared analysis and UV−visible optical absorption analysis point out a gradual evolution of the film structure from a mixture of α and β polymorphs to the only β polymorph in the sample heated at 290 °C for 14 h. A pronounced decrease of carbon and nitrogen atomic percentages against an o…
Benzene monitoring by micro-machined sensors with SnO2 layer obtained by using micro-droplet deposition technique
2011
International audience; SnO2 thin layers were deposited by the way of the micro-droplet technique. The sensor substrate consisted of a thin membrane developed on oxidised silicon wafer. The sensing layers were deposited by means of the micro-droplet technique into thin layers of about 100 nm. Such devices were tested for benzene detection. The obtained results showed a very high sensitivity for this chemical compound since 500 ppb were detected. The results presented in this paper were not focused on the reactional mechanism of benzene detection but rather on the development of a cheap and sensitive sensor using sol-gel and micro-droplet processes. Since these layers were elaborated using s…
Capacitance study of thin film SnO2:F/p-type a-Si:H heterojunctions
2011
Abstract We characterized SnO 2 :F/p-type a-Si:H heterojunctions by current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements at room temperature to determine the junction parameters. Samples with circular geometry and different diameters were characterized. The current scales with the junction area, and the current density J as a function of the voltage V is a slightly asymmetric curve with a super-linear behaviour (cubic law) for high voltages. Using a transmission line model valid for devices with circular geometry, we studied the effects of the SnO 2 :F resistivity on the measured capacitance when the SnO2:F layer works as an electrical contact. The measured C-V curve allows us t…
The lower rather than higher density charge carrier determines the NH 3 -sensing nature and sensitivity of ambipolar organic semiconductors
2018
International audience; Despite the extensive studies and great application potentials, the sensing nature of ambipolar organic semiconductor gas sensors still remains unclarified, unlike their inorganic counterparts. Herein, different numbers of thiophenoxy groups are introduced into the phthalocyanine periphery of bis(phthalocyaninato) rare earth semiconductors to continuously tune their HOMO and LUMO energies, resulting in the ambipolar M[Pc(SPh)(8)](2) [M = Eu (1), Ho (2)] and p-type M(Pc)[Pc(SPh)(8)] [M = Eu (3), Ho (4)]. An OFET in combination with direct I-V measurements over the devices from the self-assembled nanostructures of 1-4 revealed the original electron and hole densities (…

Air pollution, residential greenness and metabolic dysfunction during early pregnancy in the infancia y medio ambiente (Inma) cohort
2021
Despite extensive study, the role of air pollution in gestational diabetes remains unclear, and there is limited evidence of the beneficial impact of residential greenness on metabolic dysfunction during pregnancy. We used data from mothers in the Spanish INfancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) Project from 2003–2008. We obtained spatiotemporally resolved estimates of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposures in early pregnancy and estimated residential greenness using satellite-based Normal Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) within 100, 300 and 500 m buffers surrounding the mother’s residence. We applied logistic regression models to evaluate associations between each o…
Selective oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane over SnO2-promoted NiO catalysts
2012
[EN] Ni-Sn-O mixed oxides catalysts have been investigated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane. The catalysts were prepared through the evaporation of aqueous solutions of nickel nitrate and tin oxalate and finally calcined in air at 500 degrees C for 2 h. These materials have been characterized by several techniques (N-2-adsorption, X-ray diffraction, High-Resolution Electron Microscopy, temperature programmed reduction, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy of adsorbed CO and O-18/O-16 isotope exchange). The addition of just a tiny amount of tin highly increases the selectivity to ethylene (from ca. 40% to 80-90%). Thus, high selectivity to et…
