This study was performed to explore the feasibility of tracing nanoparticles for drug transport in the healthy rat brain with a clinical MRI scanner. Phantom studies were performed to assess the R1 ( = 1/T1) relaxivity of different magnetically labeled nanoparticle (MLNP) formulations that were based on biodegradable human serum albumin and that were labeled with magnetite of different size. In vivo MRI measurements in 26 rats were done at 3T to study the effect and dynamics of MLNP uptake in the rat brain and body. In the brain, MLNPs induced T1 changes were quantitatively assessed by T1 relaxation time mapping in vivo and compared to post-mortem results from fluorescence imaging. Followi…
Anti-angiogenic drug loaded liposomes: Nanotherapy for early atherosclerotic lesions in mice.
2018
Fumagillin-loaded liposomes were injected into ApoE-KO mice. The animals were divided into several groups to test the efficacy of this anti-angiogenic drug for early treatment of atherosclerotic lesions. Statistical analysis of the lesions revealed a decrease in the lesion size after 5 weeks of treatment.
Carbon Nanodots as Functional Excipient to Develop Highly Stable and Smart PLGA Nanoparticles Useful in Cancer Theranostics
2020
Theranostic systems have attracted considerable attention for their multifunctional approach to cancer. Among these, carbon nanodots (CDs) emerged as luminescent nanomaterials due to their exceptional chemical properties, synthetic ease, biocompatibility, and for their photothermal and fluorescent properties useful in cancer photothermal therapy. However, premature renal excretion due to the small size of these particles limits their biomedical application. To overcome these limitations, here, hybrid poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA-CDs) nanoparticles with suitable size distribution and stability have been developed. CDs were decisive in the preparation of polymeric nanoparticles, not on…
Photoluminescent decoration of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles for dual-imaging applications
2018
A selective functionalization of dopamine amino group with the photoluminescent 7-nitroben-zofurazan was achieved through a one-pot protection-functionalization-deprotection sequence. The resulting fluorescent catecholic ligand was used as a capping agent for iron oxide nanoparticles thus obtaining photoluminescent magnetic nanoparticles (PL-MNPs). The PL-MNPs were then embedded into PLGA-b-PEG polymeric nanocarriers which quenched the emission of the capping agent. Full recovery of fluorescence was observed after disassembling the polymeric layer of the nanoparticle, thus supporting the use of PL-MNPs as a multifunctional system for targeted drug delivery.
Fluorescence and spin properties of defects in single digit nanodiamonds
2009
International audience; This article reports stable photoluminescence and high-contrast optically detected electron spin resonance (ODESR) from single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect centers created within ultrasmall, disperse nanodiamonds of radius less than 4 nm. Unexpectedly, the efficiency for the production of NV fluorescent defects by electron irradiation is found to be independent of the size of the nanocrystals. Fluorescence lifetime imaging shows lifetimes with a mean value of around 17 ns, only slightly longer than the bulk value of the defects. After proper surface cleaning, the dephasing times of the electron spin resonance in the nanocrystals approach values of some microseconds, …
Magnetic–fluorescent Langmuir–Blodgett films of fluorophore-labeled ferritin nanoparticles
2009
Abstract We have covalently coupled fluorophore 4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD) to the external ferritin shell through lysine residues. An increase in the luminescence quantum yield of the fluorescent ferritin particles and a blue shift in its emission peak compared to individual fluorophore were observed. The study of the particles by transmission electron microscopy showed that the native iron core ferritin is intact and that no degradation occurs during chemical functionalization of the protein shell. The NBD-labeled ferritin particles are water soluble, which allowed their controlled deposition by the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique. Superparamagnetic and fluores…
An overview of nanoparticles role in the improvement of barrier properties of bioplastics for food packaging applications
2017
Abstract Plastics are the most demanding materials for the food packaging industry due to economical and practical reasons such as their low cost, lightness, easy to handle in integrated production lines, and their higher resistance than other materials. Besides containment and information, the packaging should protect foodstuffs from not only contamination but also the loss of food quality. Despite the many advantages, their inherent permeability is perhaps the foremost drawback that could lead to the loss of some food components and, also, to the transference of gases or moisture from the surrounding to the food. Thus, the barrier properties and the wettability are of fundamental importan…
