Orthodontic treatment need in Spanish schoolchildren: an epidemiological study using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need

2008

SUMMARY The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment need in 12- to 16-year-old Spanish schoolchildren using the aesthetic component (AC) and Dental Health Component (DHC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and to analyse the relationship with gender and age. The study followed the World Health Organization recommendations for oral health surveys. The sample comprised 655 schoolchildren (306 males and 349 females) who had not undergone orthodontic treatment, divided into two groups: 363 12-year-olds and 292 15- to 16-yearolds, out of a representative sample of the school population of the Valencian Community. The IOTN results…

Patient Expectations in the Treatment of Painful Diabetic Polyneuropathy: Results from a Non-Interventional Study

2014

Objective Pain control is the main objective when treating patients with painful diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP). However, DPNP is associated with further substantial patient burden that often is not appropriately addressed. Our study identified patients' needs and asked patients what they expected from DPNP treatment. Methods Baseline data were collected in a German prospective, non-interventional study in patients with DPNP starting or switching pain medication at the discretion of the investigator. DPNP severity was evaluated using Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) and Clinician/Patient Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S/PGI-S). Primary objective of this study was to evaluate for whi…

Research and Its Utilization at the Institute for Educational Research, Jyvaskyla, Finland

1984

Abstract Kari, J. 1984. Research and Its Utilization at the Institute for Educational Research, Jyvaskyla, Finland. Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research 28, 1‐7. The article deals with research carried out at the Institute for Educational Research during the last ten years and compares it with other educational research undertaken in Finland in the 1970's. A systematic study of educational research was initiated by Professor O.K. Kyostio in the 1970's. Approximately one half of the financial resources of the Institute is received from educational authorities and the other half from the University of Jyvaskyla. When examined in relation to educational levels, the emphasis of the acti…

<p>Preoperative Anemia and Iron Deficiency Screening, Evaluation and Management: Barrier Identification and Implementation Strategy Mapping<…

2020

Introduction and aims: Patients undergoing major surgery risk significant blood loss and transfusion, which increases substantially if they have pre-existing anemia. Preoperative Anemia and Iron Deficiency Screening, Evaluation and Management Pathways (PAIDSEM-P) outline recommended blood tests and treatment to optimize patients before surgery. Documented success using PAIDSEM-P to reduce transfusions and improve patient outcomes exists, but the reporting quality of such studies is suboptimal. It remains unclear what implementation strategies best support the implementation of PAIDSEM-P. Method: Maximum variation, purposive sampling was used to recruit a total of 15 partici-pants, including…

State of Training, Clinical Services, and Research on Dual Disorders Across France, India, Israel, and Spain.

2016

This article overviews training, clinical services, and research on dual disorders across four countries: France, India, Israel, and Spain. The current dual disorders systems in each of the four countries were reviewed, with a focus on strengths and limitations of each.In France, psychiatric care occurs within the public health care system and involves little training of medical graduates for managing dual disorders. Special courses and forums for specialists have recently started to meet the growing interest of physicians in learning how to manage dual disorders. The Indian health care system grapples with a large treatment gap for mental disorders, and while some treatment services for dua…

Is Education Getting Lost in University Mergers?

2010

Mergers are common phenomena in higher education institutions. Improving educational quality is typically one of the stated goals of university mergers. Yet, little information exists about how merging institutions approach this goal. This paper presents results from a study of planning documents created prior to four mergers in the Finnish higher education system. These documents show that there was little concrete attention given to the educational issues related to the mergers. Most attention was placed on administrative issues and issues related to research. When educational issues were mentioned, it was almost always in the form of vague goals with few details provided about how the go…

The Routines-Based Model Internationally Implemented

2020

Professionals from 10 countries are implementing practices from the Routines-Based Model, which has three main components: needs assessment and intervention planning, a consultative approach, and a method for running classrooms. Its hallmark practices are the Routines-Based Interview, support-based visits with families, and a focus on child engagement. Implementers were interested in actual practices for putting philosophy and theory into action in their systems and cultures. We describe implementation challenges and successes and conclude that (a) models have to be adaptable, (b) some principles and practices are indeed universal, (c) we can shape excellent practices for international use,…

New organisation for follow-up and assessment of treatment efficacy in sleep apnoea.

2019

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disease, and there is an increased demand for OSA diagnosis and treatment. However, resources are limited compared with the growing needs for OSA diagnosis and management, and alternative strategies need to be developed to optimise the OSA clinical pathway. In this review, we propose a management strategy for OSA, and in general for sleep-disordered breathing, to be implemented from diagnosis to follow-up. For this purpose, the best current options seem to be: 1) networking at different levels of care, from primary physicians to specialised sleep laboratories; and 2) use of telemedicine. Telemedicine can contribute to the improved cost-ef…
