Flipping of alkylated DNA damage bridges base and nucleotide excision repair

Alkyltransferase-like proteins (ATLs) share functional motifs with the cancer chemotherapy target O6-alkylguanine-DNA alkyltransferase (AGT) and paradoxically protect cells from the biological effects of DNA alkylation damage, despite lacking the reactive cysteine and alkyltransferase activity of AGT. Here we determine Schizosaccharomyces pombe ATL structures without and with damaged DNA containing the endogenous lesion O6-methylguanine or cigarette-smoke-derived O6-4-(3-pyridyl)-4-oxobutylguanine. Inhibition of succinate oxidation by the herbicide UKJ72J

Abstract The inhibitory activity of the herbicide UKJ72J on succinate oxidation in mitochondria from various plant species was studied. In monocotyledons (Gramineae: wheat, oat, maize; Liliaceae: onion, leek) succinate oxidation was affected only at high concentrations. Among dicotyledons widely differing sensitivities were found: in Solanaceae (tomato, potato, tobacco), Leguminosae (mung bean, soybean) and Compositae (sunflower) I 50 concentrations for UKJ72J inhibition were below 55 μM. The treatment of enteric bacterial infections using oral bacteriophage therapy can be challenging since the harsh acidic stomach environment renders phages inactive during transit through the gastrointestinal tract. The antimicrobial activity of honey and propolis extracts from the central region of Romania

Abstract Honey and propolis from Apis mellifera (bees) are products that have been used due to their multiple biological properties. The antimicrobial activity of 10 honey samples of known origin and 4 propolis extracts gathered from the same beekeepers located in Transylvania, Romania, were used against certain microorganisms: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogenic bacterium widely investigated for its high incidence in clinical environments and its ability to form strong biofilms. During biofilm development, sessile cells acquire physiological characteristics differentiating them from planktonic cells.
