(1) Background: A non-progressive congenital ataxia (NPCA) phenotype caused by b-III spectrin (SPTBN2) mutations has emerged, mimicking spinocerebellar ataxia, autosomal recessive type 14 (SCAR14). The pattern of inheritance, however, resembles that of autosomal dominant classical spinocerebellar ataxia type 5 (SCA5). (2) Methods: In-depth phenotyping of two boys studied by a customized gene panel. Candidate variants were sought by structural modeling and protein expression. Transmission pattern of hobo transposable element in transgenic lines of Drosophila melanogaster

This study is an attempt to trace the fate of hobo elements in the genomes of E strains of Drosophila melanogaster that have been transfected with pHFL1, a plasmid containing an autonomous hobo. Such long-term population studies (over 105 generations) could be very useful for better understanding the population and genomic dynamics of transposable elements and their pattern of insertions. Molecular analyses of hobo elements in the transfected lines were performed using Southern blots of XhoI-digested genomic DNAs. The complete element was observed in all six injected lines. Nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS2) expression in histologically normal margins of oral squamous cell carcinoma

The activity of Nitric Oxide Synthase 2 (NOS2) was found in oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) but not in normal mucosa. Molecular changes associated to early carcinogenesis have been found in mucosa near carcinomas, which is considered a model to study field cancerization. The aim of the present study is to analyze NOS2 expression at the histologically normal margins of OSCC. Study Design: Eleven biopsy specimens of OSCC containing histologically normal margins (HNM) were analyzed. Ten biopsies of normal oral mucosa were used as controls. Airway inflammation in patients affected by obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) has been shown to be associated to upper airway inflammation. The object of the present study was to establish the presence of bronchial inflammation in OSAS subjects. In 16 subjects affected by OSAS, and in 14 healthy volunteers, airway inflammation was detected by the cellular analysis of the induced sputum. OSAS patients, as compared to control subjects, showed a higher percentage of neutrophils (66.7+/-18.9 vs. 25.8+/-15.6) (P<0.001) and a lower percentage of macrophages (29.4+/-18.4 vs. 70.8+/-15.3) (P<0.001). Considering that obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is usually associated with endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disorders, our aim was to examine the erythrocyte deformability and the oxidative status in a group of OSAS subjects. We consecutively enrolled 48 subjects with OSAS defined after a 1-night cardiorespiratory sleep study, subsequently subdivided according to the apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) value in two subgroups: Low (L = 21 subjects with AHI30) and High (H = 27 subjects with AHI30). Maģistra darba mērķis ir raksturot augšējā devona Pļaviņu svītas dolomītus, ka arī raksturot to fizikāli-mehāniskas īpašības pētāmajās atradnēs, kuras atrodas Latvijas centrālajā un ziemeļaustrumu daļā. Pētījuma izstrādes laikā lauka darbu ietvaros tika veikti atseguma sienu dokumentācijas un paraugošanas darbi. Izmantojot plānslīpējumu pētījumus un Losandželosas un Mikro-Devāla nodilumizturības testus, tika iegūta nepieciešamā informācija par ieža fizikāli-mehāniskajam īpašībām un tekstūras un struktūras ietekmi uz tām. Pētījuma rezultātā secināts, ka Pļaviņu svītas dolomītu fizikāli-mehāniskas īpašības pasliktinās no Latvijas ziemeļaustrumiem uz rietumiem. Papildus tika secināts, ka dolom…
