The sea urchin embryo: a model to study Alzheimer's beta amyloid induced toxicity.

2009

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. The cause of AD is closely related to the accumulation of amyloid beta peptide in the neuritic plaques. The use of animal model systems represents a good strategy to elucidate the molecular mechanism behind the development of this pathology. Here we use the Paracentrotus lividus embryo to identify molecules and pathways that can be involved in the degenerative process. As a first step, we identified the presence of an antigen related to the human APP, called Pl APP. This antigen, after gastrula stage, is processed producing a polypeptide of about 10 kDa. By immunohistochemistry we localized the Pl APP antigen in some ser…

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of flavonoid and saponin fractions from Zizyphus lotus (L.) Lam.

2008

Abstract The effect of the flavonoid and saponin fractions from the leaves and root bark of Zizyphus lotus (200 mg/kg) was evaluated on carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats and on acetic acid-induced algesia in mice. In addition, two methanolic extracts from the plant (1 mg/ear) were tested on oxazolone-induced contact-delayed hypersensitivity (DTH) in mice. The effect of the different fractions was also evaluated in vitro on the nitrite production induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in RAW 264.7 macrophages. The results showed that both the flavonoid and saponin fractions significantly inhibited paw edema, algesia, and nitrite production without affecting cell viability. Furthermore, the …

In tube-solid phase microextraction-nano liquid chromatography: Application to the determination of intact and degraded polar triazines in waters and…

2017

Abstract In-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME) coupled to miniaturized liquid chromatography (LC) techniques are attractive mainly due to the column efficiency improvement, sensitivity enhancement and reduction of solvent consumption. In addition, the nanomaterials based sorbents can play a key role in the improvement of the extraction efficiency taking into account their interesting physical and chemical properties. Thus, in this work the performance of IT-SPME coupled to nano LC (NanoLC) has been compared with the performance of IT-SPME coupled to capillary LC (CapLC) with similar configurations for the determination of polar triazines including their degradation products. In both…

Carbon nanotube-protein carriers enhance size-dependent self-adjuvant antibody response to haptens

2013

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are nanomaterials with interesting emerging applications. Their properties make CNTs excellent candidates for use as new nanovehicles in drug delivery, immunization and diagnostics. In the current study, we assessed the immune-response-amplifying properties of CNTs to haptens by using azoxystrobin, the first developed strobilurin fungicide, asamodel analyte. Anazoxystrobin derivative bearingacarboxylated spacer arm (hapten AZc6) was covalently coupled to bovine serum albumin (BSA), and the resulting BSA-AZc6 conjugate was covalently linked to four functionalized CNTs of different shapes and sizes, varying in diameter and length. These four types of CNT-based construc…

Polyacrylonitrile block copolymers for the preparation of a thin carbon coating around TiO2 nanorods for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

2013

Herein, a new method for the realization of a thin and homogenous carbonaceous particle coating, made by carbonizing RAFT polymerization derived block copolymers anchored on anatase TiO2 nanorods, is presented. These block copolymers consist of a short anchor block (based on dopamine) and a long, easily graphitizable block of polyacrylonitrile. The grafting of such block copolymers to TiO2 nanorods creates a polymer shell, which can be visualized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Thermal treatment at 700 °C converts the polyacrylonitrile block to partially graphitic structures (as determined by Raman spectroscopy), establishing a thin carbon coating (as determined by transmission electron m…

Effect of Reynolds number and lithium cation insertion on titanium anodization

2016

This work studies the influence of using hydrodynamic conditions (Reynolds number, Re = 0 to Re = 600) during Ti anodization and Li+ intercalation on anatase TiO2 nanotubes. The synthesized photocatalysts were characterized by using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), Raman Confocal Laser Microscopy, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Mott-Schottky analysis (M-S), photoelectrochemical hydrogen production and resistance to photocorrosion tests. The obtained results showed that the conductivity of the NTs increases with Li+ intercalation and Re. The latter is due to the fact that the hydrodynamic conditions eliminate part of the initiation layer formed over the tu…

Symmetry and models of single-walled TiO2 nanotubes with rectangular morphology

2011

Abstract The formalism of line symmetry groups for one-periodic (1D) nanostructures with rotohelical symmetry has been applied for symmetry analysis of single-walled titania nanotubes (SW TiO2 NTs) formed by rolling up the stoichiometric two-periodic (2D) slabs of anatase structure. Either six- or twelve-layer (101) slabs have been cut from TiO2 crystal in a stable anatase phase. After structural optimization, the latter keeps the centered rectangular symmetry of initial slab slightly compressed along a direction coincided with large sides of elemental rectangles. We have considered two sets of SW TiO2 NTs with optimized six- and twelve-layer structures, which possess chiralities (−n, n) an…

Partial photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of 3-pyridinemethanol by Pt, Au and Pd loaded TiO2 nanotubes on Ti plate

2021

Abstract The photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation of 3-pyridinemethanol to 3-pyridinemethanal and vitamin B3 was investigated by using Pt, Au and Pd loaded (as single or bimetallic) nanotube structured TiO2 on Ti plate in water under UVA irradiation. Nanotube structured TiO2 on Ti plate samples were prepared as anode by anodic oxidation method in ethylene glycol solution in different times, and then they were calcined at 500 °C to be obtained in crystalline form. The anodes were loaded with noble metals by electrochemical reduction method and characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, and photocurrent techniques. The TiO2 on the plates was in the anatase phase. The loaded metals were in metallic form…

Ab initiomodeling of sulphur doped TiO2nanotubular photocatalyst for water-splitting hydrogen generation

2012

In order to construct an efficient visible-light-driven TiO2 photocatalyst for water splitting applications, one has to perform improvements of its electronic structure. In this theoretical study we consider single-walled anatase TiO2 nanotubes having following morphologies: (101) 3-layered wall with chirality indexes (n,0) and (n,n), (101) 6-layered wall with (n,0) and (0,n), (001) 6-layered wall with (n,0) and (0,n), and (001) 9-layered wall with (n,0) and (0,n). The latter configuration occurs to be the most energetically stable, due to possessing negative strain energy. In our study the most stable 9-layered anatase (001) (0,n) nanotube has been doped with sulphur. According to obtained…

Ruthenium Oxide Nanotubes Via Template Electrosynthesis

2011

Ruthenium oxide nanotubes were fabricated by a single-step galvanostatic deposition using porous anodic alumina membrane as template. For the electrodeposition process, we used a electrochemical cell specifically designed in order to employ only 0.5 ml of 0.02 M RuCl3•xH2O solution. The deposition from a very small volume was specifically addressed owing to the high cost of ruthenium compounds, which could be of some relevance from an applicative point of view. Several techniques were used to characterize the samples prior to and after thermal treatment, which was carried out at different temperatures in order to study the crystallization process of the deposit. Raman spectroscopy of as-dep…
