Relationship between the acid and limonin content of Washington Navel orange juices

Juice samples of Washington Navel oranges from three groves were analysed for limonin, °Brix and acid during several seasons. A strong correlation between limonin and acid content has been found.

The ferrocenylbis(methylene)phosphorane Fc-P(=CTms 2 ) 2 ( 1 ) (Fc = −C 5 H 4 FeC 5 H 5 ) can be synthesized starting from ferrocenyldichlorophosphane FcPCl 2 or ferrocenyldilithiophosphane FcPLl 2 . The X-ray structure of ( 1 ) shows some unusual structural features, which indicate considerable electronic interaction of the ferrocenyl group and the σ 3 λ 5 -phosphorane unit. As a consequence of this interaction, the rotational barrier of the methylene bonds is extraordinary low. Therefore, in contrast to other bis(methylene)phosphoranes, the endo - and exo -Tms groups are indistinguishable on the NMR time scale even at −100°C. Comparison of the antibacterial effect of uroepithelial cells from healthy donors and children with asymptomatic bacteriuria

Bacterial attachment to uroepithelial cells (UEC) and the effect of UEC on bacterial growth was investigated in 15 healthy persons and 12 patients suffering from asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI). Desquamated UEC and mannose-resistant Escherichia coli were co-cultivated for up to 90 min. While no difference in bacterial adherence was observed between healthy controls and patients, 33.4% of the bacteria attached to normal UEC were found to be dead under microscopic evaluation (acridine orange staining), whereas no killing effect could be observed in patients' UEC 5 min after the onset of incubation. Seeing odors in color: Cross-modal associations in children and adults from two cultural environments

International audience; We investigated the occurrence and underlying processes of odor–color associations in French and American 6- to 10-year-old children (n = 386) and adults (n = 137). Nine odorants were chosen according to their familiarity to either cultural group. Participants matched each odor with a color, gave hedonic and familiarity judgments, and identified each odor. By 6 years of age, children displayed culture-specific odor–color associations, but age differences were noted in the type of associations. To study the impact of a non-attentively perceived odour on food choices, we used a priming paradigm. Alliesthesia is greater for odors of fatty foods than of non-fat foods

International audience; Alliesthesia is the modulation of the rewarding value of a stimulus according to the internal state (hungry or satiated). This study aimed to evaluate this phenomenon as a function of the nature of the stimulus (odors evoking edible and non-edible items, and the food odors evoking fatty and non-fat foods) and to compare the effectiveness of two reward evaluations (measures of pleasantness and appetence) to reveal alliesthesia.
