Behavior of four main dairy pathogenic bacteria during manufacturing and ripening of pecorino siciliano cheese
2020
Background: Consumption of raw cheese may be associated with different diseases. This study aimed to evaluate behavior of four pathogenic bacteria during manufacture and ripening of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Pecorino Siciliano cheese.
Methods: The experimental cheese groups were inoculated with pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli O157, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella Enteritidis, and Staphylococcus aureus. The cheese making processes were monitored from milk curdling until 3 months ripened cheeses and the levels of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) and the four dairy pathogens were evaluated by plate counts. Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-Polymerase Chai…
TGF-β Dependent T-Cell Regulation in Colitis and Colon Cancer
2008
Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) is a potent growth inhibitor endowed with tumor-suppressing activity. Unfortunately, cancers are often resistant to such growth inhibition. This evasion frequently results from a genetic loss of functional TGF-β signaling components. On the other hand, cancer cells often produce high amounts TGF-β1 by themselves and sometimes respond to it with invasion and metastasis. Much effort is being done to develop therapeutic approaches to modulate TGF-β signaling in cancer cells either to inhibit the TGF-β-induced invasive phenotype or to reestablish its growth-inhibitory activities. However, TGF-β is a pleiotropic cytokine with important functions not only in c…
Encoding into Visual Working Memory: Event-Related Brain Potentials Reflect Automatic Processing of Seemingly Redundant Information.
2013
Encoding and maintenance of information in visual working memory in an S1-S2 task with a 1500 ms retention phase were investigated by means of event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Participants were asked to decide whether two visual stimuli were physically identical (identity comparison (IC) task) or belonged to the same set or category of equivalent patterns (category comparison (CC) task). The stimuli differ with regard to two features. (1) Each pattern can belong to a set of either four (ESS 4) or eight (ESS 8) equivalent patterns, mirroring differences in the complexity with regard to the representational structure of each pattern (i.e., equivalence set size (ESS)). (2) The set of pat…
Comparison of Hybrid Blends for Solar Cell Application
2010
In blended hybrid systems distinct micro- or nanostructured materials can be formed by phase separation. Network structures of particles or rods in a polymer matrix can be developed via self-assembly. We use this blending approach to compare active materials for application in solar cell devices. Blends were fabricated from either poly(hexylthiophene) P3HT or poly(triphenylamine) PTPA mixed with nanocrystalline TiO 2 rods. In this manner, we compare two different hole conducting polymers in their performance in photovoltaic devices, while experimental conditions are kept identical. We find that the choice of solvent and photovoltaic characterization conducted in inert atmosphere is of impor…
Translating Polish Fantasy – translational challenges and problems concerning culture‑rooted elements
2015
Tłumacząc polską fantasy – wyzwania i problemy tłumaczeniowe związane z elementami kulturowymi
Curcumin-derived pyrazoles and isoxazoles: Swiss army knives or blunt tools for Alzheimer's disease?
2007
Curcumin binds to the amyloid beta peptide (Abeta) and inhibits or modulates amyloid precursor protein (APP) metabolism. Therefore, curcumin-derived isoxazoles and pyrazoles were synthesized to minimize the metal chelation properties of curcumin. The decreased rotational freedom and absence of stereoisomers was predicted to enhance affinity toward Abeta(42) aggregates. Accordingly, replacement of the 1,3-dicarbonyl moiety with isosteric heterocycles turned curcumin analogue isoxazoles and pyrazoles into potent ligands of fibrillar Abeta(42) aggregates. Additionally, several compounds are potent inhibitors of tau protein aggregation and depolymerized tau protein aggregates at low micromolar …
Heme oxygenase-1 inhibits apoptosis in Caco-2 cells via activation of Akt pathway
2005
Heme oxygenase-1 can play a protective role against cellular stress. In colon cancer cells, these effects would be relevant to oncogenesis and resistance to chemotherapy. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of heme oxygenase-1 induction on cell survival in a human colon cancer cell line, Caco-2. Serum deprivation induced apoptosis, reduced Akt and p38 phosphorylation, and increased p21(Cip/WAF1) levels. Heme oxygenase-1 induction by treatment with cobalt protoporphyrin IX resulted in resistance to apoptosis, activation of Akt, reduction in p21(Cip/WAF1) levels and modification of bcl2/bax ratio towards survival. Indomethacin reduced apoptosis but in contrast to heme oxygenase-1,…
Pharmacokinetic interaction between efavirenz and ketoconazole in rats
2009
It is well known that efavirenz and ketoconazole act as an inducer and inhibitor of CYP3A4, respectively. As a result of these actions, co-administration of these drugs may result in changes in the pharmacoki- netic parameters of one or both of them. 2. Duodenum-cannulated rats have been used to compare the effect of intraduodenal (KC i.d. ) and intrave- nous administration of ketoconazole (KC i.v. ) on the pharmacokinetics of efavirenz after intraduodenal administration, as well as the potential effect of efavirenz as a CYP450 inducer on ketoconazole phar - macokinetic profile. 3. While KC i.v. did not show any significant effect on efavirenz pharmacokinetic profile, KC i.d. increased sig-…
Activation and translocation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase after stimulation of monocytes with contact sensitizers.
2002
Recently we described the induction of tyrosine phosphorylation by contact sensitizers as an early molecular event during the activation of antigen- presenting cells. In this study, the role of the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase for the activation of human monocytes after exposure to four structurally unrelated contact sensitizers was analyzed in comparison with the irritant benzalkonium chloride and an inductor of oxidative stress (H 2 O 2 ) using immunofluorescence, Western blotting, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay techniques. Bio chemical analysis revealed a translocation of p38 from the cytoplasm to the detergent-resistant cell fraction only upon stimulation with contact sen…
Amyloid Precursor-like Protein 1 Influences Endocytosis and Proteolytic Processing of the Amyloid Precursor Protein
2005
Ectodomain shedding of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a key regulatory step in the generation of the Alzheimer disease amyloid beta peptide (Abeta). The molecular mechanisms underlying the control of APP shedding remain little understood but are in part dependent on the low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP), which is involved in APP endocytosis. Here, we show that the APP homolog APLP1 (amyloid precursor-like protein 1) influences APP shedding. In human embryonic kidney 293 cells expression of APLP1 strongly activated APP shedding by alpha-secretase and slightly reduced beta-secretase cleavage. As revealed by domain deletion analysis, the increase in APP shedding re…
