Potential Off-Flavour Compounds from Chloro-Bleaching of Pulp and Chlorodisinfection of Water

Chlorobleaching of pulp is the most important source of organochlorine pollutants in the Finnish aquatic ecosystems. Similar types of pollutants are formed during chlorodisinfection of water. The model compound approach employed in our laboratory has revealed the structures and amounts of pollutants formed and has made the interpretation and assay of individual organochlorine compounds in the environment possible. Tainting of fish near chlorination plants is frequently observed. POPs and organic polysufides in sediments of Lake Ladoga

Abstract The study included one station close to a pollution source (depth 59 m) and another far from polluted areas (depth 40 m). Samples were analysed for organic chlorine, bromine and sulfur compounds. Samples taken with a corer were sliced to the layers of 0–1, 1–4, 4–7 cm etc. down to the depth of 34 cm. The dating was made with two independent methods, the 210Po method and with the soot particle counting method. The analyses were made with a multiresidue method. Gas chromatography was connected to low resolution mass spectrometry (LRMS) or to high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). The comparative spreading behavior of enantiomeric and racemic tyrosine amphiphiles

Several derivatives of tyrosine or its methyl ester have been synthesized in which the para hydroxyl group on the aromatic side chain has been converted to a long chain alkyl ether or urethane. The surface behavior of these compounds is discussed. Enantiomeric discrimination, the ability of a chiral molecule to distinguish between mirror-image stereoisomers, has been investigated for the urethane derivates by comparing the surface pressure-area isotherms of the enantiomer with that of the racemic compound. Enzymatically catalyzed synthesis of photocrosslinkable oligophenols

The HRP-catalyzed oligomerization of cinnamoyl-hydroquinone-ester and cinnamoyl-4-hydroxyanilide led to the formation of soluble polyphenols. The oligomers were synthexized in water/1,4-dioxane and in water/acetone mixtures and characterized by NMR, FTIR and SEC. Upon UV treatment of the homogenoes films the polyphenols were crosslinked due to [2+2]-cycloadditions of the cinnamoyl functions.

Background— Estrogens can upregulate endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in human endothelial cells by increasing eNOS promoter activity and enhancing the binding activity of the transcription factor Sp1. Resveratrol, a polyphenolic phytoalexin found in grapes and wine, has been reported to act as an agonist at the estrogen receptor. Simultaneous determination of main phenolic acids and flavonoids in tomato by micellar electrokinetic capillary electrophoresis

[EN] A methodology for the determination of tomato phenolic acids and flavonoids has been developed combining MEKC and DAD detection. The influence on polyphenol separation of pH and background electrolyte, BGE (borax, acetonitrile, methanol and SDS concentrations), was studied and optimized using response surface methodology and weighted desirability function. Separation of polyphenols was achieved within 20 min at 15 degrees C using 11.3 mM borax and 11.2 mM SDS adjusted to pH 8.5 as BGE. Validation was performed using standards and tomato extracts. Fixed oil from seeds of narrow-leaved ash (F. angustifolia subsp. angustifolia): Chemical profile, antioxidant and antiproliferative activities.

Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. angustifolia is a plant with an age-old use for the production of manna. However, it is also a valuable source of fixed oil rich-seeds. In the present study we examined the chemical and biological properties of this oil in order to support a possible application in foodstuffs, nutraceuticals and cosmetics.
