Influence of oxygen ion elementary diffusion jumps on the electron current through the conductive filament in yttria stabilized zirconia nanometer-si…

2021

Abstract The structure of the electron current through an individual filament of a nanometer-sized virtual memristor consisting of a contact of a conductive atomic force microscope probe to an yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thin film deposited on a conductive substrate is investigated. Usually, such investigation is performed by the analysis of the waveform of this current with the aim to extract the random telegraph noise (RTN). Here, we suggest a new indirect method, which is based on the measurement of the spectrum of the low-frequency flicker noise in this current without extracting the RTN, taking into account the geometrical parameters of the filament. We propose that the flicker no…

Probing predictions due to the nonlocal interface Hamiltonian: Monte Carlo simulations of interfacial fluctuations in Ising films

2019

Extensive Monte Carlo simulations have been performed on an Ising ferromagnet under conditions that would lead to complete wetting in a semi-infinite system. We studied an L×L×D slab geometry with oppositely directed surface fields so that a single interface is formed and can undergo a localization-delocalization transition. Under the chosen conditions the interface position is, on average, in the middle of the slab, and its fluctuations allow a sensitive test of predictions that the effective interactions between the interface and the confining surfaces are nonlocal. The decay of distance dependent correlation functions are measured within the surface, in the middle of the slab, and betwee…

Conductivity of the two-dimensional electron gas atLaAlO3/SrTiO3interface

2017

We propose an analytical theory of metallic conductivity in the two-dimensional (2D) ${\mathrm{LaAlO}}_{3}/{\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$ (LAO/STO) interface. For that we consider the electron-phonon interaction at the interface. The electronic part is taken from our previous work [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 18, 2104 (2016)], considering the conditions for the interfacial charge carrier (electron or hole) to become itinerant. The second ingredient deals with the atomic oscillations localized near the interface and decaying rapidly at its both sides, which can be regarded as 2D acoustic phonons. The dispersion of such phonons depends on the characteristics of phonon spectra of LAO and STO. Calculating t…

Spark plasma sintering of cobalt ferrite nanopowders prepared by coprecipitation and hydrothermal synthesis.

2007

International audience; Cobalt ferrite exhibits a high coercivity at room temperature and a strong magnetic anisotropy compared to the other spinel ferrites and, consequently appears as an interesting material for permanent magnets and high-density recording. The magnetic properties depend also on the crystallite size. In order to keep the powder properties in a bulk material, dense nanostructured cobalt ferrite has to be sintered. A field activated sintering process like spark plasma sintering (SPS) may be promising for such challenge. The present paper deals with: (i) the preparation of cobalt ferrite by two methods: coprecipitation and hydrothermal synthesis in supercritical water; (ii) …

Precision mass measurements using a penning trap and highly charged ions produced in an electron beam ion source

1997

A method for precision mass measurements in a Penning trap using highly charged ions produced in an electron beam ion source (CRYSIS) has been developed. The cyclotron frequencies for O8+, 7+, 6+, 5+ and Ar18+, 17+, 16+, 15+, 14+, 13+ ions have been determined by the excitation of the sum frequency v+ + v−. In addition to CRYSIS ions, H+, H2+ and He+ ions were produced by electron bombardment of the H2 rest gas or helium gas introduced through an UHV leak valve into an auxiliary ion trap (or a pre-trap). A technique for fast (seconds) interchanging of the ion species in the precision trap has been implemented to reduce the long term magnetic field drift.

Analysis of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium Lead breeding blanket module under normal operation steady state conditi…

2015

Within the framework of DEMO R&D activities, a research cooperation has been launched between ENEA, the University of Palermo and CEA to investigate the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the outboard equatorial module of the DEMO1 Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) blanket under normal operation steady state scenario. The research campaign has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) and adopting a qualified commercial FEM code. In particular, two different 3D FEM models (Model 1 and Model 2), reproducing respectively the central and the lateral poloidal-radial slices of the WCLL blanket module, have been set up. A particular attent…

On the thermal and thermomechanical assessment of the “Optimized Conservative” helium-cooled lithium lead breeding blanket concept for DEMO

2018

Abstract Within the framework of EUROfusion R&D activities a research campaign has been performed at CEA-Saclay, in close collaboration with the University of Palermo, in order to investigate thermal and thermomechanical performances of the “Optimized Conservative” concept of DEMO Helium-Cooled Lithium Lead breeding blanket (HCLL). Attention has been paid to the HCLL outboard equatorial module (OEM) when subjected to the steady state nominal loading scenario. To this purpose three simplified 3D models, characterized by an increasing level of detail, have been set-up taking into account, firstly, a single radial-toroidal slice, then a basic module geometric unity composed by two adjacent sli…

Thermoelectric properties of spark plasma sintered composites based on TiNiSn half-Heusler alloys

2011

Half-Heusler (HH) and especially TiNiSn-based alloys have shown high potential as thermoelectric (TE) materials for power generation applications. The reported transport properties show, however, a significant spread of results, due mainly to the difficulty in fabricating single-phase HH samples in these multicomponent and multiphased systems. In particular, little attention has been paid to the influence of the various minority phases on the TE performance of these compounds. A clear understanding of these issues is mandatory for the design of improved and stable TE HH-based composites. This study examines the structural and compositional influence of the residual metallic (Sn) and interme…

High temperature oxidation of higher manganese silicides

2021

Abstract The oxidation kinetics and mechanisms of higher manganese silicides (HMS) MnSi1.75, MnSi (1.75-x)Gex, MnSi(1.75-x)Alx (with x = 0.005 and 0.01)were studied and the effects of densification methods and dopant concentration discussed. Oxidation experiments were conducted using thermogravimetry (TGA), while post characterization with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) showed that spark plasma sintering (SPS) is a better densification method than hot pressing (HP). Except for undoped HMS, HMS doped with 0.5at% Ge had the lowest oxidation rate. Stable formation of a SiO2 protective layer was the main reason for improved oxidation resistance in …

Production of hydrogen negative ions in an ECR volume source: balance between vibrational excitation and ionization

2018

International audience; The operation of an ECR-driven (2.45 GHz) hydrogen negative ion source is studied. Electron densities and temperatures are investigated with electrostatic probes and negative ion densities are measured with laser photodetachment. Vacuum ultraviolet irradiance measurements are focused on molecular transitions to the ground state while high-resolution visible emission spectroscopy is used to study the transitions between excited states for both molecules and atoms. The standalone operation of the source is found to be more efficient in higher pressures (12 mTorr) where negative ion densities are as high as 4×109 cm−3. Further investigation on the operation of the sou…
