Biomimetic oxygen reduction by cofacial porphyrins at a liquid-liquid interface.

2012

Oxygen reduction catalyzed by cofacial metalloporphyrins at the 1,2-dichlorobenzene−water interface was studied with two lipophilic electron donors of similar driving force, 1,1'-dimethylferrocene (DMFc) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF). The reaction produces mainly water and some hydrogen peroxide, but the mediator has a significant effect on the selectivity, as DMFc and the porphyrins themselves catalyze the decomposition and the further reduction of hydrogen peroxide. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the biscobaltporphyr- in, 4,5-bis(5-(2,8,13,17-tetraethyl-3,7,12,18-tetramethylporphyrinyl))-9,9-dimethylxanthene, Co2(DPX), actually catalyzes oxygen reduction to hydrogen p…

Identifying three-way DNA junction-specific small-molecules

2012

Three-way junction DNA (TWJ-DNA, also known as 3WJ-DNA) is an alternative secondary DNA structure comprised of three duplex-DNAs that converge towards a single point, termed the branch point. This point is characterized by unique geometrical properties that make its specific targeting by synthetic small-molecules possible. Such a targeting has already been demonstrated in the solid state but not thoroughly biophysically investigated in solution. Herein, a set of simple biophysical assays has been developed to identify TWJ-specific small-molecule ligands; these assays, inspired by the considerable body of work that has been reported to characterize the interactions between small-molecules an…

Unusual Formation of a Stable 2D Copper Porphyrin Network

2013

Copper(II) 5,15-bis(diethoxyphosphoryl)-10,20-diphenylporphyrin was obtained and characterized by means of cyclic voltammetry, electron paramagnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared, and UV-visible spectroscopy. Three crystalline forms were grown and studied by means of X-ray diffraction methods (single crystal and powder). The highly electron-withdrawing effect of phosphoryl groups attached directly to the porphyrin macrocycle results in a self-assembling process, with formation of a stable 2D coordination network, which is unusual for copper(II) porphyrins. The resulting 2D structure is a rare example of an assembly based on copper(II) porphyrins where the copper(II) central metal io…

Energy transfers in monomers, dimers, and trimers of zinc(II) and palladium(II) porphyrins bridged by rigid Pt-containing conjugated organometallic s…

2009

A series of linear monomers (spacer-M(P)), dimers (M(P)-spacer-M'(P)), and trimers (M(P)-spacer-M'(P)-spacer-M(P)) of spacer/metalloporphyrin systems (M' = Zn, M = Zn, Pd, P = porphyrin, and spacer = trans-C(6)H(4)C[triple bond]CPtL(2)C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)- (L = PEt(3))) including mixed metalloporphyrin compounds, were synthesized and characterized. The S(1) and T(1) energy transfers Pd(P)*--Zn(P) occur with rates of approximately 2 x 10(9) s(-1), S(1), and 0.15 x 10(3) (slow component) and 4.3 x 10(3) s(-1) (fast component), T(1). On the basis of a literature comparison with a related dyad, the Pt atom in the conjugated chain slows down the transfers. The excitation in the absorption ban…

Structural and Molecular Characterization of meso-Substituted Zinc Porphyrins: A DFT Supported Study

2011

Structural parameters of a range of over 100 meso-substituted zinc porphyrins were reviewed and compared to show how far the nature of the functional group may affect the interatomic distances and bond angles within the porphyrin core. It was proved that even despite evident deformations of the molecular structure, involving twisting of the porphyrin's central plane, the coupled π-bonding system remains flexible and stable. DFT calculations were applied to a number of selected porphyrins representative for the reviewed compounds to emphasize the relevance of theoretical methods in structural investigations of complex macrocyclic molecular systems. Experimental and DFT-simulated IR spectral …

Periodontal status and the incidence of selected bacterial pathogens in periodontal pockets and vascular walls in patients with atherosclerosis and a…

2022

The aim of the study was to examine the periodontal status of patients with atherosclerosis and abdominal aortic aneurysms. The occurrence of 5 periodontopathogens was evaluated in periodontal pockets and atheromatous plaques together with specimens from pathologically changed vascular walls of aortic aneurysms. The study comprised 39 patients who qualified for vascular surgeries. Patients with periodontitis and concomitant atherosclerosis or aneurysms were enrolled in the study. Periodontal indices were evaluated, and subgingival plaque samples were examined together with atheromatous plaques or specimens from vascular walls to identify, by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the following pe…

Easy access to heterobimetallic complexes for medical imaging applications via microwave-enhanced cycloaddition

2015

The Cu(I)-catalysed Huisgen cycloaddition, known as “click” reaction, has been applied to the synthesis of a range of triazole-linked porphyrin/corrole to DOTA/NOTA derivatives. Microwave irradiation significantly accelerates the reaction. The synthesis of heterobimetallic complexes was easily achieved in up to 60% isolated yield. Heterobimetallic complexes were easily prepared as potential MRI/PET (SPECT) bimodal contrast agents incorporating one metal (Mn, Gd) for the enhancement of contrast for MRI applications and one “cold” metal (Cu, Ga, In) for future radionuclear imaging applications. Preliminary relaxivity measurements showed that the reported complexes are promising contrast agent…

Solution-processed thin films based on sandwich-type mixed (phthalocyaninato)(porphyrinato) europium triple-deckers: Structures and comparative perfo…

2012

The solution-processed thin films of a series of three sandwich-type mixed (phthalocyaninato)(porphyrinato) europium complexes with different numbers of hydroxyl groups at the meso-substituted phenyl groups of porphyrin ligand 1–3 were prepared by a quasi-Langmuir–Shafer (QLS) method. Examination by spectroscopic methods revealed that J-type aggregates have been formed with the increasing degree of order of molecular stacking 1 < 2 < 3 films. The IR and XRD results reveal that, a dimeric supramolecular structure was formed depending mainly on the π–π interaction between the tetrapyrrole cores of neighboring triple-decker molecules, which, as the building blocks, self-assembled into the targ…
