Switching on the deep brain stimulation: effects on cardiovascular regulation and respiration.

Abstract Background Objective of this study was to evaluate the acute cardiovascular and respiratory effects of switching on the deep brain stimulation in the follow up of nine Parkinson's disease patients with subthalamic nucleus stimulation and six cluster headache patients with posterior hypothalamic area stimulation. Methods Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate were monitored continuously during supine rest in both groups. Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy in type 1 diabetic patients with and without peripheral neuropathy.

One hundred Type 1 diabetic patients (54 men, 46 women) mean age 28.9 +/- 8.4 years, were selected from among individuals referred to our hospital, with no previous diagnosis of diabetic chronic complications including diabetic neuropathy. After clinical and physical examinations, subjects were divided into two groups: with (n = 37) and without (n = 63) peripheral neuropathy. We compared the impact of diabetes on ischemic heart disease in patients hospitalized in a public general hospital over a 10-year period. Insulin, renin-aldosterone system and blood pressure in obese people.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between insulin, the renin-aldosterone system and blood pressure in obese subjects. DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross sectional study of a group of severely obese normotensive subjects who were surgical candidates (n=39; mean BMI: 47.8±1.4) and a group of hypertensive patients (n=57; mean BMI: 28.0±0.7) twenty-nine of whom had BMI>27. Morbidity in 565 Type 2 Diabetic Patients According to Stage of Nephropathy

Between 1988 and 1992, 565 type 2 diabetic patients were examined for nephropathy and diabetes-associated diseases during hospital treatment. Stages of nephropathy were defined as no clinical sign of nephropathy (N = 280), microalbuminuria (N = 38), overt proteinuria (N = 105), impaired renal function (N = 55), and chronic dialysis therapy (N = 87). In dialyzed patients, HbA1c averaged 6.8%, and, in the other groups, HbA1c was between 7.6% and 8.3% (normal range, 3.8%-6.1%). Cataract was not associated with the severity of nephropathy.
