AbstractStreptomyces coelicolor is a Gram-positive microorganism often used as a model of physiological and morphological differentiation in streptomycetes, prolific producers of secondary metabolites with important biological activities. In the present study, we analysed Streptomyces coelicolor growth and differentiation in the presence of the hypo-methylating agent 5′-aza-2′-deoxycytidine (5-aza-dC) in order to investigate whether cytosine methylation has a role in differentiation. International audience; In this study, the influence of environmental factors on the germination time of Penicillium camemberti and Penicillium roqueforti conidia was evaluated. To do so, the effects of i/temperature, pH, water activity, and ii/organic acids were determined using models based on i/cardinal values, and ii/minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) respectively. Cardinal values for germination of conidia were not observed to be species dependent. Minimum temperatures were estimated to be below the freezing point, with an optimum of 26.9 degrees C, and a maximum of 33.5 degrees C. Anhydrobiosis in yeast: Glutathione overproduction improves resistance to dehydration of a recombinant Ogataea (Hansenula) polymorpha strain

Abstract We show for the first time that a recombinant strain of yeast Ogataea (Hansenula) polymorpha is at least as tolerant to dehydration-rehydration treatment as the wild type strain. It is believed that this unusual characteristic of this recombinant yeast strain is linked with its ability to overproduce glutathione. Based on plasma membrane permeability analysis, we hypothesise that glutathione, in addition to its powerful antioxidative protective effects on membrane lipids, may also protect membrane proteins and/or nucleic acids. Using host species traits to understand the Wolbachia infection distribution across terrestrial beetles.

AbstractKnowledge of Wolbachia prevalence with respect to its hosts is restricted mainly to taxonomic/phylogenetic context. In contrast, relations between infection and most host’s ecological and biological traits are poorly understood. This study aimed to elaborate on relations between bacteria and its beetle hosts in taxonomic and the ecological contexts. In particular, the goal is to verify which ecological and biological traits of beetles could cause them to be prone to be infected. Tolerance of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) early life stages to manganese sulfate is affected by the parents

European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) embryos and larvae were exposed to 6 different manganese sulfate (MnSO4) concentrations from fertilization to the 3-d-old larvae. The fertilization success, offspring survival, larval growth, yolk consumption, embryonic and larval Mn tissue concentrations and transcript levels of detoxification-related genes were measured in the long-term incubation. Full factorial breeding design (4 females x 2 males) enabled examining the significance of both female and male effects, and female-male interactions in conjunction with the MnSO4 exposure on the observed endpoints.
