Transferability of ASTM/NIST alanine–polyethylene recipe at ISS

Abstract Alanine–polyethylene solid state dosimeters were prepared at Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS) following the recipe proposed by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) with the goal of testing its transferability. Dosimeters were prepared using 95% alanine and 5% polyethylene, by weight. They are rugged and of increased sensitivity, repeatability and reproducibility as respect to the ISS alanine-paraffin pellets. Reproducibility of about 1% was obtained at 10 Gy and at 3 Gy if one single pellet or a stack of five dosimeters were used, respectively.

Il contributo esamina le opere custodite nella chiesa di S. Benedetto, nota come Badia, di Caccamo, centro della provincia di Palermo. Si tratta di un edificio monastico appartenente alle monache benedettine che custodisce dipinti, stucchi, monumenti funebri, intagli e altre pregevoli opere realizzate tra il Cinquecento e il Settecento alcune delle quali commissionate da monache e badesse. Tra queste ultime Honufria Fara Lombardo che, figlia del barone della Scala e Manchi don Onofrio Lombardo, nel 1669 fa realizzare l’ostensorio in argento arricchito di diamanti e topazi ora custodito in Chiesa Madre. Il contributo, che fa parte del catalogo della mostra, esamina alcune le suppellettili liturgiche conservate nei Tesori della Chiesa Madre di Geraci Siculo e della Matrice Nuova di Castelbuono e nel Museo Civico di quest’ultimo centro siciliano. Si tratta di opere in argento, in discreto stato di conservazione, commissionate perlopiù dai munifici Ventimiglia, signori del luogo. Sono manufatti realizzati da argentieri siciliani dagli inizi del Seicento sino all’Ottocento, quindi dal periodo barocco al neoclassicismo. Il saggio esamina la statua lignea rivestita in lamine d’argento della Madonna del Carmelo e alcune suppellettili liturgiche custodite nella chiesa del Carmine Maggiore di Palermo. Si tratta di opere realizzate da artisti siciliani tra il Settecento e l’Ottocento. Collocato nell’antico mercato storico di Ballarò, la chiesa, con annesso convento dei PP. Carmelitani, custodisce opere che testimoniano la raffinata committenza dell’Ordine. Context: Dietary analyses are essential to achieve a better understanding of animal ecology. In the case of endangered species, assessing dietary requirements is crucial to improve their management and conservation. The Bonelli's eagle (Aquila fasciata) has experienced a severe decline throughout its breeding range in Europe and, in Italy, fewer than 50 pairs remain, and only in Sicily. Pellets based on polyuronates: Relationship between gelation and release properties

International audience; Three polyuronates: amidated low methoxyl pectin (ALMP), low methoxyl pectin (LMP) and polygalacturonic acid (PGA) were used to encapsulate rutin in pellets, and they were characterized by different techniques (macroscopic properties, Calcium and rutin release). The ability of the three polyuronates to bind calcium ions and the viscoelastic properties of gels were performed to relate the properties of the pellets to the gel structures. The nature of black stains in Lascaux Cave, France, as revealed by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

We used surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to investigate the chemical composition of the black stains threatening the rock-art paintings of Lascaux Cave, Montignac, France. The stains are mainly composed of melanin from the fungus Ochroconis sp. and the faecal pellets of the collembolan Folsomia candida. Abstract With the aim to control and improve the thermo-chemical conversion of straw pellets, the experimental investigations of the DC electric field effect on the combustion dynamics and heat energy production were made. The electric field effect on the gasification/combustion characteristics was studied using three different positions of the positively charged electrode in flame. EPR/ALANINE PELLETS WITH LOW Gd CONTENT FOR NEUTRON DOSIMETRY

This paper reports on results obtained by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation on a blend of alanine added with low content of gadolinium oxide (5 % by weight) to improve the sensitivity to thermal neutron without excessively affecting tissue equivalence. The sensitivity is enhanced by this doping procedure of more an order of magnitude. The results are compared with those obtained with the addition of boric acid (50 % by weight) where boron is in its natural isotopic composition in order to produce low-cost EPR dosemeters.
