How globalization is changing digital technology adoption: An international perspective
2021
Abstract This paper examines how globalization influences the adoption of digital technologies. The purpose of the paper is to explain how globalization affects new technology adoptions. We use country-level data from the globalization index (KOF), digital adoption index (DAI), global competitiveness index (GDI), and total factor productivity (TFP) on 183 countries and using advanced panel data modeling. Empirical findings show globalization can significantly affect technology adoption in all countries. The study's findings show globalization positively affects technology transfers and spillovers; here, using digital technology. Countries undergoing significant technological changes achieve…
Measurement of ERP-project success: findings from Germany and Austria
2016
The implementations of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have increased rapidly world-wide over the last two decades. ERP projects are long lasting and complex activities, influencing main internal and external operations of organizations. As companies spend an immense investment on these projects, in the beginning managers are focusing on most common success factors to reach the main goal of a proper implementation. For evaluating ERP projects in retrospective, an applicable measurement of the whole implementation and its economic effects is essential. This research paper evaluates the most prominent ERP project success models mentioned in scientific literature and gives an overvi…
A reading of the Spanish Constitution (1978)
1991
The object of this paper is to examine the Spanish Constitution (1978) using the perspective of modern consitutional political economy. This exercise is an interesting one for two reasons: first it provides a kind of test for the usefulness of the c.p.e. approach and the insights the application of that approach yields; second, it provides an opportunity for a wider readership of a document that is of considerable interest in its own right.
Exploring the determinants of anti-mafia entrepreneurial behaviour: an empirical study on southern Italian SMEs
2017
This study analyses organized crime from an economic perspective and highlights the crucial role of extortion in mafia activities. From an economic viewpoint, we debate the conditions that lead companies to resist mafia extortion. To study the reactions of firms to extortion, we adopt an institutional perspective and consider the contribution of different theories in the socially responsible behaviour and organized crime literature, in an attempt to understand this complex entrepreneurial behaviour better. A sample of 116 southern Italian SMEs, whose entrepreneurs have publicly opposed mafia extortion, was selected. By adopting a matched-pair design, anti-mafia firms were subsequently match…
Business in society or business and society: the construction of business–society relations in responsibility reports from a critical discursive pers…
2013
In this article, we analyse the discursive construction of business–society relations in Finnish businesses’ social and environmental responsibility reports. Drawing on critical discourse analysis, we examine how these discursive constructions maintain and reproduce various interests and societal conditions as a precondition of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Our study contributes to the recent discussion on discursive struggles in business–society relations and the role various interests play in this struggle. We find that not only are power asymmetries between actors veiled through the universalization of interests, but reporting can also be seen as a communicative action that prov…
Measuring the shadow economy and its drivers: the case of peripheral EMU countries
2019
We adopt a long-run perspective to investigate the size of the shadow economy and explore the trends in this area. The analysis is based on a panel of peripheral EMU countries over the period 1965-2015. Our empirical approach relies on a multiple indicators and multiple causes (MIMIC) framework. This approach is a variant of structural equation modelling (SEM). We used two sets of variables, (i.e. potential determinants and indicator variables) to estimate an underlying (unobserved) index that measures the evolution of the shadow economy. Ascertaining the relative importance of the shadow economy enabled analysis of its relationship with other institutional and social issues (e.g. corruptio…

Modelización matemática en la educación secundaria: manual de uso
2019
[EN] One of the main problems that arise when implementing a mathematical modeling task to the secondary classroom is the lack of a detailed description, from the didactic perspective, that helps and guides the in-service teachers in the implementation of this type of activity and that allows them to identify which are the learning objectives being pursued; if this kind of activities t within the oficial curriculum; the type of tasks that allow these objectives to be achieved; how to carry out their evaluation or what methodology to use. In this article we will address all these aspects from the perspective of a classroom experience, detailing each of the phases involved in the implementati…
Bhaskar’s Theory of Publishing and Its Contribution to Theorizing (Evolving New Forms of) Educational Media
2021
Enterprises which are usually categorized as educational publishers increasingly develop and market products like learning platforms. Such products are at least to a considerable extent pieces of software rather than products based on content in the sense of texts, images, and maybe moving images or sounds (which typically constitute products of the media industries). Michael Bhaskar’s The Content Machine. Towards a Theory of Publishing (2013) represents one of the most comprehensive theoretical approaches to publishing in recent years. This contribution discusses, how far products like learning platforms can be described as results of acts of (educational) publishing or can be considered (…
