Abstract For the calculations of oxygen partial pressure in a two-dimensional tissue model supplied by a capillary network (inhomogeneously perfused tissue), two differential equations are given that describe the process in the tissue and capillaries. The differential equations are coupled by the boundary conditions. Results obtained by using the method of successive displacements are given for the two-dimensional problem. This method exhibits a satisfactory convergence. The accuracy of the results is about ±5% based on the initial concentration. Hydrokinetic simulations of nanoscopic precursor films in rough channels

We report on simulations of capillary filling of high-wetting fluids in nano-channels with and without obstacles. We use atomistic (molecular dynamics) and hydrokinetic (lattice-Boltzmann) approaches which point out clear evidence of the formation of thin precursor films, moving ahead of the main capillary front. The dynamics of the precursor films is found to obey a square-root law as the main capillary front, z^2(t) ~ t, although with a larger prefactor, which we find to take the same value for the different geometries (2D-3D) under inspection. Abstract When a magnetic Ising film is confined in a L × M geometry ( L ⪡ M ) short-range competing magnetic fields ( h 1 ) are applied at opposite walls along the M -direction, a (weakly rounded) localization–delocalization transition of the interface between domains of different orientation that runs parallel to walls can be observed. This transition is the precursor of a wetting phase transition that occurs in the limit of infinite film thickness ( L → ∞ ) at the critical curve T w ( h 1 ) . For T T w ( h 1 ) ( T > T w ( h 1 ) ) such an interface is bound to (unbound from) the walls, while right at T w ( h 1 ) the interface is freely fluctuating around the center of the film. Statistical mechanics characterization of spatio-compositional inhomogeneity

On the basis of a model system of pillars built of unit cubes, a two-component entropic measure for the multiscale analysis of spatio-compositional inhomogeneity is proposed. It quantifies the statistical dissimilarity per cell of the actual configurational macrostate and the theoretical reference one that maximizes entropy. Two kinds of disorder compete: i) the spatial one connected with possible positions of pillars inside a cell (the first component of the measure), ii) the compositional one linked to compositions of each local sum of their integer heights into a number of pillars occupying the cell (the second component). Abstract We present a Monte Carlo computer simulation study of phase transitions in a three-dimensional Ising/lattice gas model with nearest neighbor attractive coupling and confined to a slit-like capillary with absorbing walls. Data are generated for thicknesses D ⩽ 40 and are used to study the shift of the phase boundaries due to finite wall separation.

Abstract Two species of scarab beetles, the Osaka beetle (Anomala osakana) and the Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica), utilize the opposite enantiomers of japonilure, (Z)-5-(1-decenyl)oxacyclopentan-2-one, as their sex pheromones. Each species produces only one of the enantiomers that functions as its own sex pheromone and as a very strong behavioral antagonist for the other species. Using an integrated approach we tested whether the discrimination of these two opposite signals is due to selective filtering by pheromone binding proteins or whether it originates in the specificity of ligand–receptor interactions. Abstract The gas chromatographic retention behaviour of the propanoyl and monochloropropanoyl esters of saturated C3C5 branched-chain and unsaturated C3C6 alcohols on SE-30 and OV-351 capillary columns at several temperatures is reported. Retention index increments at 80 and 120°C show the effect of branching in the alkyl chain and also the effect of unsaturation and of its position in the chain with chlorination at the two possible positions in the acyl chain. The various incremental effects are discussed and compared with the behaviour of the corresponding n-alkyl esters.
Option-Implied Volatility Spillovers between Risk Factors in FX Markets and States of the Global Economy

This study employs option price data to back out the implied portfolio volatilities of the dollar and carry trade risk factors of the G-10 currencies. To investigate expected volatility spillover effects between risk factors in FX markets, we extend Grobys (2015) and Diebold and Yilmaz (2009) by constructing expected volatility spillover indices based upon the forecast-error variance decomposition of Vector-Autoregression models employing option-implied portfolio volatilities. Surprisingly, the dollar and carry trade risk factors that are orthogonal in the first moment exhibit strong stochastic interrelations in the second expected moment. Abstract The arrangement of streptavidin bound to a biotinylated monolayer of a polymeric amphiphile at the air-water interface is studied as a function of lateral pressure or ligand density. Closely packed domains are observed by fluorescence microscopy.
