First Report of Phytophthora spp. as Pathogens of Pandorea jasminoides in Italy

In the summer of 2005, approximately 5% of a nursery stock of 12-month-old potted plants of bower vine (Pandorea jasminoides (Lindl.) K. Schum.) in Sicily (Italy) showed wilt, leaf chlorosis, defoliation, root rot, and collapse of the entire plant. Three Phytophthora spp. (20, 50, and 30% of the isolations of the first, second, and third species, respectively) were isolated from rotted roots on BNPRAH selective medium (2). Retention of Carvacrol and Ethyl Acetate in Aqueous Gels of Potato Starch and Konjac Glucomannan

The partition coefficients of two volatile compounds in dispersions containing potato starch (PS) and/or konjac glucomannan (KGM) have been determined by the phase ratio variation method using equilibrium headspace analysis by gas chromatography. The influence of the moment when volatile compounds were added and the effect of the polysaccharide dispersions were investigated. For ethyl acetate, retention by KGM was based on viscosity effect. Retention of carvacrol was important when amylose was accessible. The addition of KGM to PS suspensions decreased the retention governed by interactions with starch.

Characterization of antigenic epitopes of potato virus Y.

Immunochemical analysis of overlapping synthetic hexapeptides covering the entire length of the coat protein of potato virus Y (PVY) revealed immunodominant regions both at the N-terminal and at the C-terminal end of the coat protein. Immunization of rabbits with synthetic peptides representing N- and C-terminal regions of the coat protein resulted in production of antibodies that reacted with PVY. Antigenicity of PVY peptides was found to correlate with predicted beta turns, with hydrophilicity and with predicted chain flexibility. Characterization of the immunochemical properties of PVY will facilitate the development of detection methods for potyviruses.

When Glomus intraradices-colonised tomato roots were extracted in methanol at 6 degrees C, chlorogenic acid (5-caffeoylquinic acid), naturally present in the extract, was slowly converted by transesterification into methyl caffeate. The progress of the reaction could be monitored by HPLC. The reaction only occurred when the ground roots were left in contact with the hydro-alcoholic extract and required the presence of 15-35% water in the mixture. Behaviour of components having a major impact in potato flavour were studied using solid phase micro extraction-gas chromatography (SPME-GC). AbstractInsect proteases are implicated in Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal proteins mode of action determining toxin specificity and sensitivity. Few data are available on the involvement of proteases in the later steps of toxicity such as protease interaction with toxin–receptor complexes and the pore formation process.
