Molecularly Imprinted Polymers as Useful Sorbents for Bioanalysis

2022

The determination of various active compounds in different types of biological samples attracts recently considerable attention. Unfortunately, the complexity of such sample matrices requires the application of multistage analytical procedures, which by many analysts is considered the most critical step in the whole analytical process. Sample preparation techniques dedicated to bioanalysis must ensure effective isolation and enrichment of various, often trace, amounts of analytes. Furthermore, the high selectivity of extraction of the target analytes, in relation to other interfering substances co-presented in the sample, is important in this case. Therefore, over the last two decades, the …

Spin qubits with electrically gated polyoxometalate molecules

2007

Spin qubits offer one of the most promising routes to the implementation of quantum computers. Very recent results in semiconductor quantum dots show that electrically-controlled gating schemes are particularly well-suited for the realization of a universal set of quantum logical gates. Scalability to a larger number of qubits, however, remains an issue for such semiconductor quantum dots. In contrast, a chemical bottom-up approach allows one to produce identical units in which localized spins represent the qubits. Molecular magnetism has produced a wide range of systems with tailored properties, but molecules permitting electrical gating have been lacking. Here we propose to use the polyox…

Manganese(II) complexes of scorpiand-like azamacrocycles as MnSOD mimics.

2011

Mn(II) complexes of scorpiand-type azamacrocycles constituted by a tretrazapyridinophane core appended with an ethylamino tail including 2- or 4-quinoline functionalities show very appealing in vitro SOD activity. The observed behaviour is related to structural and electrochemical parameters.

Compartmentalization of gypsum and halite associated with cyanobacteria in saline soil crusts

2016

The interface between biological and geochemical components in surface crust of a saline soil was investigated using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and variable pressure scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in combination with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS). Mineral compounds such as halite and gypsum were identified crystallized around filaments of cyanobacteria. A total of 92 genera were identified from the bacterial community based on 16S gene pyrosequencing analysis. The occurrence of the gypsum crystals, their shapes and compartmentalization suggested that they separated NaCl from the immediate microenvironment of the cyanobacteria, and that some cyanobacteria and communities of su…

Phosphorylation of cytochromes P450: First discovery of a posttranslational modification of a drug-metabolizing enzyme

2005

Cytochromes P450 (CYP) are important components of xenobiotic-metabolizing monooxygenases (CYP-dependent monooxygenases). Their regulation by induction, most commonly by transcriptional activation, mediated by xenobiotics, normally substrates of the corresponding CYP, is well known and has been widely studied. Our team has discovered an additional important regulation of xenobiotic-metabolizing CYPs pertaining to posttranslational modification by phosphorylation. Individual CYPs are phosphorylated by different protein kinases, leading to CYP isoenzyme-selective changes in the metabolism of individual substrates and consequent drastic changes in the control of genotoxic metabolites. A computational study of some electric and magnetic properties of gaseous BF3 and BCl3

2005

We present the results of an extended computational study of the electric and magnetic properties connected to Cotton-Mouton birefringences, on the trifluoro- and trichloroborides in the gas phase. The electric dipole polarizabilities, magnetizabilities, quadrupole moments, and higher-order hypersusceptibilities—expressed as quadratic and cubic frequency-dependent response functions—are computed within Hartree-Fock, density-functional, and coupled-cluster response theories employing singly and doubly augmented correlation-consistent basis sets and London orbitals in the magnetic property calculations. The results, which illustrate the capability of time-dependent density-functional theory f…

Analytical strategies for organic food packaging contaminants

2016

In this review, we present current approaches in the analysis of food-packaging contaminants. Gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detection have been widely used in the analysis of some relevant families of these compounds such as primary aromatic amines, bisphenol A, bisphenol A diglycidyl ether and related compounds, UV-ink photoinitiators, perfluorinated compounds, phthalates and non-intentionally added substances. Main applications for sample treatment and different types of food-contact material migration studies have been also discussed. Pressurized Liquid Extraction, Solid-Phase Microextraction, Focused Ultrasound Solid-Liquid Extraction and Quechers have been …
