Finnish Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions of Perceived Competence in Early Childhood Physical Education

2021

Early childhood education and care (ECEC) teachers have a central role in supporting young children’s physical activity (PA) and overall development in the early years. However, the value of early childhood education teacher training (ECETT) programmes is not widely understood. This study aimed to investigate pre-service teachers’ perceptions of perceived competence when (1) supporting a child’s PA, (2) teaching PE, and (3) observing and assessing a child’s motor skills and PA. These self-evaluations were compared with a range of individual, educational, and behavioural characteristics. Final-year Bachelor degree pre-service teachers (n = 274

A Holistic Approach to Education for Sustainability: Ecofeminism as a Tool to Enhance Sustainability Attitudes in Pre-service Teachers

2021

Abstract To achieve an effective Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), teachers should possess appropriate sustainability attitudes to transmit those values to their future students. In this article, a holistic educational intervention around the ecofeminist movement is described and its impact on the sustainability attitudes of 188 pre-service teachers is assessed. The quantitative results with a validated questionnaire reveal an initial high level of sustainability awareness and a statistically significant increase in the environmental dimension after the educational intervention. In addition, the qualitative analysis of the stories and activities for children prepared by the stude…

2019

Teachers´ perceptions about the benefits and safety of the Internet for students with intellectual disabilities may affect their willingness to promote online access for this group. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore and compare the views of pre-service and in-service teachers concerning the opportunities and hazards that the Internet has for students with intellectual disabilities. A cross-sectional survey design was conducted with the participation of 582 pre-service and in-service teachers from south-eastern Spain. Findings reveal that teachers have great concerns about the use of the Internet by students with ID, with higher ratings for perceived online risks than for o…

Adult Pre-Service Teachers Applying 21st Century Skills in the Practice

2014

In this research we present how a group of Finnish adult pre - service teachers (n=21) incorporated 21 st CS through their methods of working instructional methods in the final practicum in autumn 2013. The research material consists of pre - service teacher’s practicum plans, taped lessons and written practicum synthesis. The nature of teaching has changed significantly during the past decades, as a result of which teaching has never been more difficult or more important. This is a challenge also for teacher education programs. Assessment conception patterns of Finnish pre-service special needs teachers : the contribution of prior studies and teaching experience

2021

The main aim of this study was to investigate how Finnish pre-service special needs teachers’ (N = 134) assessment conceptions, prior academic studies in special education and teaching experience together cluster into different patterns representing different student types. Their assessment conceptions formed three main factors: 1) assessment measures learning, 2) assessment supports teaching and learning, and 3) assessment as a harmful action. All three factors were emphasised differently in each pattern. Assessment conceptions, prior studies, and teaching experience were clustered together in three different patterns: Assessment Criticals, Assessment Positives, and Assessment Cautious. Th…

THE PEDAGOGICAL EVALUATION OF THE RESPONSIVENESS OF PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS

2020

With the guidelines for pre-school education coming into effect, a paradigm change has occurred in Latvia, focusing on a child-centred educational process. Contradictions can be observed in the professional training of pre-school teachers. Clearly, pre-school educators ensure the transfer of values to the next generation and the stability of the system of education; nevertheless, their activity is often focused on imparting reproductive knowledge and skills and following familiar algorithms and stereotypes. The innovative trend – the development of child’s social and emotional skills – is not always dominant in the work of pre-school teachers. The aim of the research is to analyse the views…

Digital Teaching Competence Evaluation of Pre-Service Teachers in Spain: A Review Study

2021

Digital teaching competence is one of the main teacher training needs today. However, teacher training curricula show a significant gap in this area. The objective of this study is to carry out a systematic review of scientific articles published between 2011 and 2020 that analyze the digital teaching competence of pre-service teachers who are mainly studying in Spanish universities. The reviewed studies show that there is great heterogeneity in the theoretical frameworks and instruments employed. Pre-service teachers point out that they have certain digital skills, but they lack pedagogical skills to digitally enrich the teaching-learning processes. These aspects present challenges in rese…
