Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) comprise a large variety of toxic substances with ample distribution. The aim of this study was to evaluate the main sources of and sociodemographic factors associated with second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure, assessed both by questionnaire and by urinary cotinine (UC) levels, in non-smoking pregnant women. We conducted a cross-sectional study in pregnant women from 4 different regions in Spain. A total of 1783 non-smoking pregnant women completed a questionnaire about their previous smoking habit and SHS exposure in their 3rd trimester of pregnancy and provided a urine sample for measuring UC levels. Variation in human water turnover associated with environmental and lifestyle factors

Water is essential for survival, but one in three individuals worldwide (2.2 billion people) lacks access to safe drinking water. Water intake requirements largely reflect water turnover (WT), the water used by the body each day. We investigated the determinants of human WT in 5604 people from the ages of 8 days to 96 years from 23 countries using isotope-tracking ( 2 H) methods. Background Inequities in the distribution of environmental exposures may add an extra burden to socially disadvantaged populations, especially when acting during vulnerable periods such as pregnancy and early life, but such inequities may be more complex and uncertain than is generally assumed. Birth weight and growth trajectories during childhood are associated with cardiometabolic disease in adult life. Both extremes, low and high birth weight coupled with postnatal growth increase the early presence of cardiometabolic risk factors and vascular imprinting, crucial elements of this framework. Presence of immunoglobulins, C3 and cytolytic C5b-9 complement components on the surface of erythrocytes from patients with β-thalassaemia/HbE disease

The occurrence of IgG, IgM, IgA, C3 and C5b-9 complement complexes on erythrocytes from 43 patients with beta-thalassaemia HbE disease was investigated. Indirect immunoradiometric assays using radioiodinated protein A were employed to quantify the individual components. We confirmed that circulating erythrocytes from thalassaemic patients contained elevated amounts of IgG, and small but significant amounts of C3. In addition, small but significant amounts of C5b-9 were detected. Levels of cell-bound IgG, C3 and C5b-9 were higher in splenectomized versus non-splenectomized patients. The effect of antenatal intravenous immunoglobulin on ascending intrauterine infection after preterm premature rupture of the membranes: a pilot study

Ascending infection is a serious threat in pregnancies complicated by preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PROM). In a controlled randomized prospective pilot study (n = 18) we have evaluated the effect of intravenous IgM enriched immunoglobulin given to the mothers 24-48 hours after preterm PROM in reducing ascending infection. Using a validated infection score from laboratory and clinical data at birth, we found a significant reduction of probable infection in the neonates of the treatment group compared to the control group (p = 0.0022). Prenatal diagnosis of congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation using three-dimensional inversion rendering: A case report

We report a case of a congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung (CCAM). At 12 weeks of gestation, an echogenic lung associated to a hydrothorax was detected. Despite the results of the combined test that informed of a high risk of chromosomopathy, normal karyotype was confirmed after an amniocentesis. The three-dimensional ultrasound inversion mode depicted all the cysts within the fetal lungs as opaque areas that were seen concurrently together, which was compatible with CCAM.
