Synthesis and crystal structure of an unprecedented bismuth porphyrin containing ester pendant arms

2000

International audience; An easily prepared porphyrin with pendant arms is shown to form a stable complex with bismuth(III) ion; the complex is eight coordinate with a square antiprismatic coordination geometry; the solid-state structure exhibits the formation of a dimer assembled via mutual coordination of a terminal ester group.

Intramolecular ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions in oxo-carboxylate bridged digadolinium(iii) complexes

2010

Two new digadolinium(III) complexes with monocarboxylate ligands, [Gd2(pac)6(H2O)4] (1) and [Gd2(tpac)6(H2O)4] (2) (Hpac = pentanoic acid and Htpac = 3-thiopheneacetic acid), have been prepared and their structures determined by X-ray diffraction on single crystals. Their structures consist of neutral and isolated digadolinium(III) units, containing six monocarboxylate ligands and four coordinated water molecules, the bridging skeleton being built by a muO(1):kappa2O(1)O(2) framework. This structural pattern has already been observed in the parent acetate-containing compound [Gd2(ac)6(H2O)4] x 4 H2O (3) whose structure and magnetic properties were reported elsewhere (L. Cañadillas-Delgado, …

Dinuclear and two- and three-dimensional gadolinium(III) complexes with mono- and dicarboxylate ligands: synthesis, structure and magnetic properties

2009

Three new gadolinium(III) complexes with carboxylate ligands of formula [Gd2(ac)6(H2O)4]·2H2O (1), [Gd2(ac)2(fum)2(H2O)4]n (2) and [Gd2(ox)(fum)2(H2O)4]n·4nH2O (3) (ac = acetate, fum = fumarate and ox = oxalate) have been prepared and their structures determined by X-ray diffraction on single crystals. The structure of 1 is made up of discrete centrosymmetric di-µ-oxo(carboxylate acetate)digadolinium(III) units with an intramolecular Gd⋯Gd separation of 4.1589(3) A. Each gadolinium atom in 1 is nine-coordinated with two water molecules and seven carboxylate-oxygen atoms from four acetate ligands building a monocapped square antiprism environment. Compound 2 exhibits a sheet-like structure, …

Ca[Ag2(SCN)4]·2H2O

2004

Calcium tetrathiocyanatodiargentate(I) dihydrate, Ca[Ag(2)(SCN)(4)].2H(2)O, contains eight-membered Ag(4)S(4) rings bonded together through shared atoms to form layers parallel to (100). The thiocyanate groups link the layers to Ca-O chains running parallel to the c axis. The Ca atom is located on a twofold rotation axis parallel to b and is surrounded by four water molecules of crystallization and four thiocyanate N atoms in a distorted square antiprism.

Wearing glasses to hear differently? Aftereffects of visuomanual prismatic adaptation on auditory perception

2022

Sensorimotor plasticity is defined as the ability to produce an appropriate motor response face to environmental or bodily changes. The classical experimental paradigm to study sensorimotor plasticity is prism adaptation, which consists of pointing to visual targets while wearing prisms that shift the visual field laterally or vertically. Its aftereffects are not restricted to sensorimotor behavior but extend to sensorial modalities not directly involved during prism exposition, such as audition. There exists a mental representation of auditory frequencies in which low auditory frequencies are associated with the left part of space and high auditory frequencies with the right part of space.…

Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Reflection Scanning Microscopy

1991

The Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope (PSTM) is the photon analogue to the Electron Scanning Tunneling Microscope (ESTM). It uses the evanescent field due to the total internal reflection (TIR) of a light beam in a prism modulated by a sample attached to the prism. The exponential decay of the evanescent field is characterized by the penetration depth dp and depends on the angle of incidence θ, the wavelength and polarization of the incident beam. Changes in intensity are monitored by a probe tip scanned over the surface, and the data are processed to generate an image of the sample. Images produced by a prototype instrument are shown to have a vertical resolution of about 3 A and a late…

Resolution of the photon scanning tunneling microscope: influence of physical parameters

1992

Abstract The photon scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM) is the photon analogue of the electron scanning tunneling microscope (ESTM). It uses the evanescent field due to total internal reflection (TIR) of a light beam in a prism modulated by a sample placed on the base of the prism. Our experimental results shown details which present a lateral size as small as 200 A. The PSTM axial resolution is more difficult to evaluate. It is a function of the roughness of the sample. For very smooth samples, images shown an axial resolution of about 10 A. At last we discuss how both lateral and axial resolution can be affected by several parameters such as the tip surface distance and the roughness of …

Amorphous calcium carbonate in the shells of adult Unionoida

2011

Shells of adult individuals from two different bivalve families, Hyriopsis cumingii and Diplodon chilensis patagonicus, were studied by Micro-Raman spectroscopy and Focussed Ion Beam-assisted TEM. The shells contain amorphous calcium carbonate in a zone at the interface between the periostracum and the prismatic layer. In this area, the initial prism structures protrude from the inner periostracum layer and it is demonstrated that these structures systematically consist of highly disordered and amorphous calcium carbonate. Within this zone, ordered and disordered areas are intermingled discounting the existence of a crystallization front and favouring models of domainal crystallization proc…
