Identities of special needs education in the discourse of Finnish professors of the field

This article examines both the discourses upon which Finnish special needs education professors draw when speaking about their field, and the consequent identities for it. The research material consists of theme interviews with 10 professors of special needs education and is analysed from a socio-constructionist, discourse analytical perspective. The results show that the professors defined special needs education from two separate viewpoints: on the basis of their own personal views, or on the basis of the classical definitions of special needs education. Particularly, the impacts of collaborations between the academic sphere and the industry are examined. In this perspective, the first part is dedicated to the elaboration of a frame of analysis. This one establish links between the process of production of the knowledge, the training and the access to the labour market. Programmes were launched in the French region of Burgundy in order to increase the understanding of the social and cultural obstacles for women in terms of occupational fields, considered a priori as male dominated. As part of this programme, the Compagnie du Sablier performed an interactive theatre play called "Lucie, the technician" ; it was aimed at an audience of lower secondary school pupils. It tells the story of a young girl determined to choose a male dominated occupation, and challenges young people to consider their career choice.
