Das Cogan-I-Syndrom

2003

HLA-G and MIC expression in tumors and their role in anti-tumor immunity.

2003

Non-classical MHC class Ib molecules have attracted growing interest in recent years, especially because they interact with non-T-cell inhibitory or triggering receptors expressed on natural killer (NK) and T cells, suggesting that they have a role in immune recognition. Abnormalities in MHC class Ib expression are frequently found in human tumors of various histologies and might be associated with poor clinical outcome despite the local accumulation of immune competent cells. Available data suggest that the balance between activating and suppressing signals significantly influences the efficacy of the immune response and consequently of tumor progression.

Polyamines and microbiota in bicuspid and tricuspid aortic valve aortopathy

2019

Polyamines are small aliphatic cationic molecules synthesized via a highly regulated pathway and involved in general molecular and cellular phenomena. Both mammalian cells and microorganisms synthesize polyamines, and both sources may contribute to the presence of polyamines in the circulation. The dominant location for microorganisms within the body is the gut. Accordingly, the gut microbiota probably synthesizes most of the polyamines in the circulation in addition to those produced by the mammalian host cells. Polyamines are mandatory for cellular growth and proliferation. Established evidence suggests that the polyamine spermidine prolongs lifespan and improves cardiovascular health in …

Antigen carbohydrate 125 as a biomarker in heart failure: a narrative review.

2021

Congestion explains many of the signs and symptoms of acute heart failure (AHF) and disease progression. However, accurate quantification of congestion is challenging in daily practice. Antigen carbohydrate 125 (CA125) or mucin 16 (MUC16), a large glycoprotein synthesized by mesothelial cells, has emerged as a reliable proxy of congestion and inflammation in patients with heart failure. In AHF syndromes, CA125 is strongly associated with right-sided heart failure parameters and a higher risk of adverse clinical events beyond standard prognostic factors, including natriuretic peptides. Furthermore, CA125 has the potential for both monitoring and guide HF treatment following a decompensated H…

Assessing the impact of COVID-19 on liver cancer management (CERO-19)

2021

[Background & Aims] The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges to healthcare systems and it may have heavily impacted patients with liver cancer (LC). Herein, we evaluated whether the schedule of LC screening or procedures has been interrupted or delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

p16INK4A (CDKN2A) gene deletion is a frequent genetic event in synovial sarcomas.

2006

We assessed the frequency of genomic deletion of p16 INK4A (CDKN2A) in synovial sarcomas (SSs) and its possible association with immunoexpression of p16 and cyclin D1 and the Ki-67 proliferation index using dualcolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) on tissue microarray sections of 41 histologically and molecularly confirmed SSs. A heterozygous p16 INK4A gene deletion was identified in 28 (74%) of 38 cases, with 25 (89%) of them showing abnormal p16 protein expression (20 negative and 5 heterogeneous). Of 25 cases, 19 (76%) exhibiting increased cyclin D1 expression also demonstrated heterozygous p16 INK4A deletion. No significant association was observed between p16 INK4A deletion …

Validation of Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte Ratio in a Multi-institutional Cohort of Patients With T1G3 Non–muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer

2018

The aim of this multicenter study was to investigate the prognostic role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and to validate the NLR cutoff of 3 in a large multi-institutional cohort of patients with primary T1 HG/G3 non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC).
