Simultaneous confocal laser endomicroscopy and chromoendoscopy with topical cresyl violet
2009
Background Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) has been shown to reliably predict histology during ongoing endoscopy. To unmask lesions for CLE, chromoendoscopy has been mandated. Usually fluorescein then serves as a contrast agent for CLE, but it does not allow direct nuclear visualization, must be injected, leads to a transient skin discoloration, and may have allergic side effects. Objective To establish a single topical dye, cresyl violet (CV), for simultaneous chromoendoscopy and in vivo CLE of the lower GI tract. Design Animal preclinical study, prospective clinical trial. Setting Mainz University Clinic (tertiary care center). Patients, Methods, and Interventions To establish the sta…
Standardized staining methods: Feulgen-Rossenbeck reaction for desoxyribonucleic acid and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) procedure
2002
A project group working under the European Confederation of Laboratory Medicine (ECLM) presents recommendations for standardized procedures for the Feulgen-Rossenbeck-Schiff and the periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) reactions on cytological and histological material. The advantages and disadvantages of such standardized procedures are presented here in a preamble. Both users and manufacturers are encouraged to give their opinions with a view to achieving consensus on these procedures and on how further work on these lines may proceed.
Hyperspectral imaging reveals spectral differences and can distinguish malignant melanoma from pigmented basal cell carcinomas : A pilot study
2021
Pigmented basal cell carcinomas can be difficult to distinguish from melanocytic tumours. Hyperspectral imaging is a non-invasive imaging technique that measures the reflectance spectra of skin in vivo. The aim of this prospective pilot study was to use a convolutional neural network classifier in hyperspectral images for differential diagnosis between pigmented basal cell carcinomas and melanoma. A total of 26 pigmented lesions (10 pigmented basal cell carcinomas, 12 melanomas in situ, 4 invasive melanomas) were imaged with hyperspectral imaging and excised for histopathological diagnosis. For 2-class classifier (melanocytic tumours vs pigmented basal cell carcinomas) using the majority of…
Bagging, bumping, multiview, and active learning for record linkage with empirical results on patient identity data
2011
Record linkage or deduplication deals with the detection and deletion of duplicates in and across files. For this task, this paper introduces and evaluates two new machine-learning methods (bumping and multiview) together with bagging, a tree-based ensemble-approach. Whereas bumping represents a tree-based approach as well, multiview is based on the combination of different methods and the semi-supervised learning principle. After providing a theoretical background of the methods, initial empirical results on patient identity data are given. In the empirical evaluation, we calibrate the methods on three different kinds of training data. The results show that the smallest training data set, …

La historia a la calle: aprendizaje significativo y competencias desarrolladas con proyectos de aprendizaje en el entorno urbano
2019
[EN] In this paper is presented a teaching-learning project carried out in the Degree of History at the University of Valencia in which we are combining the service to the community with academic knowledge. The group of students carries out a history project developed in relation to the historical spaces of the urban environment to explain the city and the local context in relation to the global economic connections during the Early Modern period. This activity allows students to develop multiple skills that they can put into practice in their future jobs. The results indicate that they have been able to solve historical problems in an innovative and creative way, allowing them to acquire a…
On the Construction of Optimum Categories in Biomedical Data Recognition Problems
1979
The recognition of patterns within sets of biomedical data involves the following problems: a) Proper recording of the data to be used b) Extraction of suitable features c) Choice of categories or classes which are relevant to the medical decision task d) Estimation of the underlying distributions in the case of using parametric methods e) Choice of an adequate classification rule Whereas a lot of theories and procedures exists for most of these steps — particularly in the field of computer-aided differential diagnosis of electrocardiograms (ECG) (see [6]) — there has been only rare considerations on the problems of definition of appropriate categories.
Ilgtspējīgs izglītības atbalsts Kenijā: gadījumu izpēte par vietējo pašnoteikšanos starptautiskās attīstības palīdzības programmas ietvaros
2021
Mediterranean diet and adiposity in children and adolescents: A systematic review
2021
Our aim was to summarize, through a systematic review, the current evidence from dietary intervention and observational studies on the impact of adherence to the Mediterranean diet on adiposity markers and obesity in children and adolescents. We searched Medline up to June 1, 2021 for the identification of intervention and observational studies meeting the inclusion criteria, following the PRISMA statement. We included 55 articles: 8 intervention studies and 47 observational studies. Three trials report a beneficial effect of the dietary intervention, whereas two did not, and three did not compare with a control. All observational studies were cross-sectional, and only five studies also inc…
Protein supplementation and dietary behaviours of resistance trained men and women attending commercial gyms: a comparative study between the city ce…
2014
Background: It is anecdotally recognized that commercial gym users assume supplements in order to improve performance or health. However, dietary behaviours of people and athletes attending commercial gyms have been poorly studied. The exact amount and frequency of dietary supplements consumption are still needed to be investigated. The main purpose of this study is to understand the quantity and quality of food intake, as well as dietary supplementation in people attending commercial gyms. Secondly to compare the city centre and the suburbs of Palermo, Italy. Methods: A face-to-face questionnaire was administered to 561 subjects, 207 from the city centre (CC) and 354 from the suburbs (SB) …
