Solubilization of an Organic Solute in Aqueous Solutions of Unimeric Block Copolymers and Their Mixtures with Monomeric Surfactant: Volume, Surface T…
2008
The ability of aqueous systems, formed by unimeric copolymers and their mixtures with a monomeric surfactant, in solubilizing large quantities of 1-nitropropane (PrNO2) was explored. The copolymers are F68 and L64, which differ for the hydrophilicity, and the surfactant is sodium dodecanoate. For a better understanding of the mechanism of solubilization, thermodynamic (volume and differential scanning calorimetry), spectroscopy (steady-state fluorescence), viscosity, and interfacial investigations were carried out. PrNO2 causes the micellization of the unimeric copolymer, and the required amount of PrNO2 depends on the composition, the copolymer nature, and the temperature. Large quantities…
Volumes of Polar Additives in Aqueous Solutions of the Poly(ethylene oxide)13−Poly(propylene oxide)30− Poly(ethylene oxide)13 Triblock Copolymer at 2…
1999
Density measurements of poly(ethylene oxide)13−poly(propylene oxide)30−poly(ethylene oxide)13 (L64)−water and alcohol−L64−water systems were carried out at 293 and 301 K. The alcohols studied are propanol to pentanol and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (F3EtOH) to 2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutanol (F7BuOH). From the experimental data of the water−L64 binary system as functions of L64 concentration (mC), the partial molar volumes of L64 in the standard state and in the aqueous and micellar phases were calculated. At both temperatures L64 micelle is formed by a core of pure polypropylene oxide units and a hydrated shell of poly(ethylene oxide) units. In the case of the ternary systems, the apparent mol…
Electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide films in aqueous and organic solutions
2013
Abstract Electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO) films cast on tin oxide glass substrates were carried out in aqueous solutions and in propylene carbonate and acetonitrile. Cyclic voltammetric measurements indicate successful reduction of GO films. The reduction process begins in aqueous solutions at less negative potentials than in organic solutions. Additionally the pH value of the aqueous solutions influences the reduction potential. According to spectroscopic analysis the reduction process of the GO film can be controlled by the choice of reduction potential and electrolyte medium. The potential window in this work was made broader by increasing pH or by using organic electroly…
Mixed aggregates based on tetronic-fluorinated surfactants for selective oils capture
2015
Abstract An aqueous star-like copolymer solution was titrated with perfluoro carboxylic acids at various compositions to prepare a polymeric surfactant composed of fluorinated nano-domains. The copolymer is X-shaped where each arm contains ethylene oxide and propylene oxide repetitive units linked to a central ethylenediamine group. The aggregation behavior of the hybrid macromolecule was studied from the physico-chemical point of view by changing parameters like temperature and composition. The solubilization of perfluorinated and hydrogenated alcohols in mixed self-assembled structure revealed that a selectivity toward the fluorinated moiety can be done. The self-assembled structures are …
Continuously manufactured magnetic polymersomes--a versatile tool (not only) for targeted cancer therapy.
2013
Micromixer technology was used to prepare polymeric vesicles (Pluronic® L-121) dual loaded with the anti-cancer drug camptothecin and magnetic nanoparticles. Successful incorporation of the magnetic nanoparticles was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed a relatively narrow size distribution of the hybrid polymersomes. Camptothecin polymersomes reduced the cell viability of prostate cancer cells (PC-3) measured after 72 h significantly, while drug-free polymersomes showed no cytotoxic effects. Covalent attachment of a cancer targeting peptide (bombesin) as well as a fluorescent label (Alexa Fluor® 647) to the hybrid polymersomes was perf…
Efficient electroorganic synthesis of 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene derivatives
2012
2,3,6,7,10,11-Hexahydroxytriphenylene of good quality and purity can be obtained via anodic treatment of catechol ketals and subsequent acidic hydrolysis. The electrolysis is conducted in propylene carbonate circumventing toxic and expensive acetonitrile. The protocol is simple to perform and superior to other chemical or electrochemical methods. The key of the method is based on the low solubility of the anodically trimerized product. The shift of potentials is supported by cyclic voltammetry studies.
Anaerobic removal of 1-methoxy-2-propanol under ambient temperature in an EGSB reactor
2015
Two laboratory-scale expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors were operated at 18 and 25 °C, respectively, for the treatment of synthetic wastewater composed of ethanol and 1-methoxy-2-propanol (M2P) in a mass ratio of 4:1. Reactors were operated first with continuous wastewater supply and after with discontinuous substrate supply (5 days a week, 16 h a day) to simulate shift working conditions. Under continuous wastewater supply chemical oxygen demand (COD), removal efficiency higher than 95 % was achieved at the end of the trial applying organic loading rates (OLR) of 29 and 43 kg COD m(-3) day(-1) at 18 and 25 °C; thus, corresponding to M2P OLR of 6.4 and 9.3 kg COD m(-3) day(-1), re…
Poly(propylene imine) dendrimers functionalized with stilbene or 1,4-distyrylbenzene chromophores
2007
Abstract Two generations of dendritic nanoparticles were prepared, which contain ( E )-stilbene or ( E , E )-1,4-distyrylbenzene chromophores in the 4 or 8 terminal positions of the propylene imine dendrons. The compounds show a highly efficient photoreactivity. On prolonged irradiation all stilbenoid chromophores were destroyed by oligomerization (crosslinking) and the typical absorption and fluorescence of the chromophores disappeared completely.

Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Nonfunctionalized Olefins in Propylene Carbonate—Kinetic or Thermodynamic Control?
2011
Iridium-catalyzed hydrogenations of nonfunctionalized olefins in propylene carbonate as the solvent allow efficient catalysis with much higher enantioselectivities in comparison with dichloromethane which is usually employed for these reactions. Experimental and computational studies of the hydrogenation of 1-methylene-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene have been performed to understand the limitation for this reaction.
