Sensory Reweighting During Bipedal Quiet Standing in Adolescents
2020
A cross-sectional, prospective, between-subjects design was used in this study to establish the differences in sensory reweighting of postural control among different ages during adolescence. A total of 153 adolescents (five age groups; 13–17 years old) performed bipedal standing in three sensory conditions (i.e., with visual restriction, vestibular disturbance, and proprioceptive disturbance). Center of pressure displacement signals were measured in mediolateral and anteroposterior directions to characterize reweighting in the sensory system in static postural control when sensory information is disturbed or restricted during adolescent growth. The results indicate a development of postura…
Analyzing gastrocnemius EMG-activity and sway data from quiet and perturbed standing.
2007
In an experiment, we combined force plate measurements and surface EMG in studying quiet and perturbed standing, involving MS (Multiple sclerosis) and controls. The aim of this paper is to report the results thus obtained on the relation between filtered gastrocnemius (GA) EMG and the anterior-posterior center-of-pressure (A/P COP) coordinate. The main finding is the good correspondence between A/P COP and the filtered GA EMG in the low frequency range. The EMG envelope was calculated using a zero-lag filter. Combining this with time shifts around 250-350 ms produced a high correlation (85.5+/-8.4%) between the GA-EMG envelope and the A/P COP. This EMG-COP relation was closest when using a …
Spatial distribution and statistical properties of small-scale convective vortex-like motions in a quiet-Sun region
2011
High-resolution observations of a quiet Sun internetwork region taken with the Solar 1-m Swedish Telescope in La Palma are analyzed. We determine the location of small-scale vortex motions in the solar photospheric region by computing the horizontal proper motions of small-scale structures on time series of images. These plasma convectively-driven swirl motions are associated to: (1) downdrafts (that have been commonly explained as corresponding to sites where the plasma is cooled down and hence returned to the interior below the visible photospheric level), and (2) horizontal velocity vectors converging into a central point. The sink cores are proved to be the final destination of passive …
Road traffic noise around schools: a risk for pupil's performance?
1993
Noise levels around educational centres can negatively affect the performance of both teachers and pupils. Two public schools in Valencia, Spain, were selected for study. One of these schools was exposed to excessively high road traffic noise levels while the other was located in a relatively quiet area. The socioeconomic level of those attending the schools was very similar. A set of external and internal noise measurements were carried out, along with two different attention tests among the children. Test results were consistently better (both for tests and for children from different classrooms in each school) in the quiet school. Exposure to high traffic noise levels in the noisy school…
Cisza i milczenie w przepowiadaniu słowa Bożego
2011
Analysis of both biblical and liturgical texts leads to a conclusion that silence and quietness are a direct context of revelation of the Word of God, both in the Holy Scripture and liturgy. Through silence and quietness God prepares a man for listening and contemplation of the Word of God and the best example of this situation is Mary. Gospel is born in silence of Nazareth, Bethlehem and Golgotha. It is silence and quietness that enwraps Resurrection. Silence and quietness are a part of Gospel and therefore are also a part of preaching. Jesus’ silence in his death on the cross and in his resurrection confirms in a mysterious way Christ’s silence in the sacraments, especially in the Euchari…

Activity of bulbar respiratory modulated neurons and restart of respiration after hypocapnic apnea in rabbits
1980
The activity of respiratory modulated neurons at the end of the apneic pause and during restart of respiration and the diaphragmatic mass activity were examined and both were compared to quiet respiration. Thresholds of mutual inhibition of neurons are unevenly distributed within various phase types of neurons.
