Design and Implementation of Acoustic Source Localization on a Low-Cost IoT Edge Platform

2020

The implementation of algorithms for acoustic source localization on edge platforms for the Internet of Things (IoT) is gaining momentum. Applications based on acoustic monitoring can greatly benefit from efficient implementations of such algorithms, enabling novel services for smart homes and buildings or ambient-assisted living. In this context, this brief proposes extreme low-cost sound source localization system composed of two microphones and the low power microcontroller module ESP32. A Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) algorithm has been implemented taking into account the specific features of this board, showing excellent performance despite the memory constraints imposed by the platform. …

Nitroglycerin Hits the Nerve

2008

Organic nitrates are still widely used for the treatment of acute and chronic angina and congestive heart failure. When given acutely, their effectiveness is indisputable; in contrast, their long-term efficacy is limited because of serious side effects such as the development of tolerance and

Export market integration in the European Union

2004

This paper examines the degree and recent evolution (1988-2001) of export-price dispersion among European Union countries. It also explores the effect of exchange rates on exportprice dispersion by reviewing the experience of some European countries that participated in the exchange rate stability zone. The results indicate that export-price dispersion across European Union countries was usually lower than across OECD countries. Moreover, although there is little evidence of convergence, this is stronger across European Union countries. Finally, even though price dispersion was often lower across European Union countries where exchange rates have been relatively stable than across countries…

The body size of headstarted and wild juvenile European pond turtles (Emys orbicularis)

2018

Headstarting is a popular conservation technique in which animals are raised under artificial conditions, and then released into natural habitat. The objective of this procedure is to grow animals to a size at which they are less vulnerable to predators. However, there is still little empirical evidence for the long-term effectiveness of the technique. Therefore, we compared body size of juvenile “wild” (= not taken to artificial rearing) and headstarted European pond turtles (Emys orbicularis), from two populations (in central and western Poland). Immediately after hatching there were no differences in size of the turtles, but after seven-ten years headstarted turtles were smaller. This so…

N-glycosylation efficiency is determined by the distance to the C-terminus and the amino acid preceding an Asn-Ser-Thr sequon

2011

N-glycosylation is the most common and versatile protein modification. In eukaryotic cells, this modification is catalyzed cotranslationally by the enzyme oligosaccharyltransferase, which targets the β-amide of the asparagine in an Asn-Xaa-Ser/Thr consensus sequon (where Xaa is any amino acid but proline) in nascent proteins as they enter the endoplasmic reticulum. Because modification of the glycosylation acceptor site on membrane proteins occurs in a compartment-specific manner, the presence of glycosylation is used to indicate membrane protein topology. Moreover, glycosylation sites can be added to gain topological information. In this study, we explored the determinants of N-glycosylati…

Possible Roles of Mannoproteins in the Construction of Candida Albicans Cell Wall

1993

The shape of Candida albicans cells depends on their cell walls and some of their mannoproteins may act as modulators of the final molecular architecture. If that were the case, the wall mannoproteins might form part of what could be called a “morphogenetic code”.

A review of the biological and pharmacological activities of saponins.

1996

Summary This paper reviews the important biological and pharmacological activities of saponins reported over the last few years. These include cancer-related activity, as well as antiphlogistic and antiallergic, immunomodulating, antihepatotoxic, antiviral, hypoglycemic, antifungal and molluscicidal activities. The action of saponins on the cardiovascular, central nervous, and endocrine systems and other miscellaneous effects are also discussed.

Synthetic Inhibitors of Cell Adhesion: A Glycopeptide from E-Selectin Ligand 1 (ESL-1) with the Arabino Sialyl Lewisx Structure

2001

Particularly selective methods are required for the synthesis of arabino sialyl Lewisx glycopeptides owing to the acid-labile β-arabinopyranoside bond. It is important for the inhibition of cell adhesion that the arabino sialyl Lewisx glycopeptide 1, which contains the Gly 672 -Asp 681 sequence of the E-selectin Ligand 1 (ESL-1), binds ten times more strongly than sialyl Lewisx to E-selectin, although it is monovalent and does not contain L-fucose, which is considered essential.
