Fast proton conduction in hydrogen bonded microheterogeneous systems: Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid/N-methyl formamide liquid mixtures
2009
Structural and dynamical properties of bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP)/N-methyl formamide (NMF) liquid mixtures in the whole composition range have been investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-rays Diffraction (XRD), and AC complex impedance spectroscopy. Driven by hydrogen bond interactions among HDEHP PO(4)H group and NMF CO and NH groups, and also by steric effects among the HDEHP alkyl chains, the system microstructure is mainly characterized by the coexistence of spatially separated hydrophilic and hydrophobic nanodomains showing local organization and short-range order. The evolution of this structural feature with system composition has been highli…
Scanning electron microscopic and X ray microanalysis study of the mineral deposits in pseudoxanthoma elasticum.
1977
A skin biopsy of a 37 year old man with typical lesions of pseudoxanthoma clasticum (P.E.) associated with angioid streaks (Groenblad-Strandberg Syndrom) was examined with a scanning E. M. (SEM) and a SEM provided with a X ray micro-analyser. The SEM provided with X ray microanalyser enabled us to see the correspondence between the crystalline deposits and a calcium salt. The potassium, sodium and magnesium analysis of the specimen permits us to verify that the P.E. dermis is rich in K and poor in Mg.
Long-term leisure time physical activity and properties of bone: A twin study
2009
Effects of physical activity on bone properties, when controlled for genetic effects, are not fully understood. We aimed to study the association between long-term leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and bone properties using twin pairs known to be discordant for leisure time physical activity for at least 30 yr. Volumetric BMD and geometric properties were measured at the tibia shaft and distal end using pQCT in 16 middle-aged (50-74 yr) same-sex twin pairs (seven monozygotic [MZ] and nine dizygotic [DZ] pairs) selected from a population-based cohort. Paired differences between active and inactive co-twins were studied. Active members of MZ twin pairs had larger cortical bone cross-secti…
Prevalence and characteristics of coronary artery disease in a population with suspected ischaemic heart disease using CT coronary angiography: corre…
2008
Purpose. This study was undertaken to describe the correlation between the distribution of coronary artery disease (CAD) in a symptomatic population with suspected ischaemic heart disease, cardiovascular risk factors (RF) and clinical presentation. Materials and methods. We studied 163 patients (mean age 65.5 years; 101 men and 62 women) referred for multidetector computed tomography coronary angiography (MDCT-CA) to rule out CAD. The patients had no prior history of revascularisation or myocardial infarction. We analysed how the characteristics of CAD (severity and type of plaque) can change with the increase in RF and how they are related to different clinical presentations. Results. Pati…
High resolution Time of Flight determination based on reconfigurable logic devices for future PET/MR systems
2013
Abstract This contribution shows how to perform Time of Flight (TOF) measurements in PET systems using low-cost Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices with a resolution better of 100 ps. This is achieved with a proper management of the FPGA internal resources and with an extremely careful device calibration process including both temperature and voltage compensation. Preliminary results are reported.
Upper and lower generalized factoraggregations based on fuzzy equivalence relation
2014
We develop the concept of a general factoraggre-gation operator introduced by the authors on the basis of an equivalence relation and applied in two recent papers for analysis of bilevel linear programming solving parameters. In the paper this concept is generalized by using a fuzzy equivalence relation instead of the crisp one. By using a left-continuous t-norm and its residuum we define and investigate two modifications of such generalized construction: upper and lower generalized factoraggregations. These generalized factoraggregations can be used for construction of extensional fuzzy sets.
Combining EXAFS and XRay Powder Diffraction to Solve Structures Containing Heavy Atoms
2005
Determination of structures using x-ray powder diffraction is complicated if the reflection intensities are mainly influenced by the scattering from heavy atoms and the atomic coordinates of light atoms remain uncertain. A method like EXAFS, which is sensitive to short range order, gives reliable atomic distances in the surroundings of heavy atoms with a precision of ±0.02 A. The probability for obtaining the complete structure from x-ray powder diffraction increases if one includes parameters derived from EXAFS measurements as restraints during the procedure of structure solving. We demonstrate the potential of combining EXAFS and x-ray powder diffraction by solving the structure UO2[H2AsO…
Deconvolution of XPS spectra
1991
The resolution of XPS spectra is limited mainly by instrumental parameters like the spectral line width of the exciting X-ray source and the finite energy resolution of the electron analyzer. If the line broadening functions resulting from the instrumental setup can be estimated and expressed by a spectrometer function, a mathematical recalculation of the intrinsic signal is possible by deconvolution. With the method presented in this paper, a resolution enhancement by a factor of 3 can be obtained. Measured spectra of physically correlated spin orbit doublets have been deconvoluted, and it is shown, that the intensity ratios and the positions are comparable with results obtained by highly …
Cooperative Spin‐Crossover Behaviour in Polymeric 1D Fe II Coordination Compounds: [{Fe(tba) 3 }X 2 ]· n H 2 O
2007
A new family of 1D cooperative spin-crossover polymers with general formula [{Fe(tba)3}X2]·nH2O [tba = N-(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)benzamide; X = CF3SO3–, n = 2 (1), n = 0 (4); BF4–,n = 3 (2), n = 0 (5); 4-CH3C6H4SO3–, n = 3 (3), n = 0 (6)] has been synthesised and characterised using a series of spectroscopic methods, X-ray powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurements and differential scanning calorimetry. The copper analogue of 1, [{Cu(tba)3}(CF3SO3)2]·3H2O (7), has also been synthesised and its crystal structure solved at 293 K. Compound 7 crystallises in the P space group. The bidentate N-(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)benzamide ligand bridges the copper ions through the 1,2-nitrogen p…
Fine-Tuning of the film thickness of ultrathin multilayer films composed of consecutively alternating layers of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes
2007
We have recently introduced a new method of creating ultrathin films [1–3] based on the electrostatic attraction between opposite charges. Consecutively, alternating adsorption of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes leads to the formation of multilayer assemblies. Multilayer buildup is easily monitored by small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The total thickness of the multilayer assemblies increases linearly with the number of adsorbed layers, indicating a stepwise and regular deposition process. — Here, we report on the fine-tuning of the total film thickness by changing the ionic strength of the solvent from which the polyelectrolytes are adsorbed. When the anionic polyelectrolyte is ad…
