Multi-parameter analysis of the obstacle scattering problem

2022

Abstract We consider the acoustic field scattered by a bounded impenetrable obstacle and we study its dependence upon a certain set of parameters. As usual, the problem is modeled by an exterior Dirichlet problem for the Helmholtz equation Δu + k 2 u = 0. We show that the solution u and its far field pattern u ∞ depend real analytically on the shape of the obstacle, the wave number k, and the Dirichlet datum. We also prove a similar result for the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.

Book and Radio Play Silences : Medial Pauses and Reticence in ‘Murke's Collected Silences’ by Heinrich Böll

2019

This article analyses silence at the interface between print and audio media by reading and listening to Heinrich Böll's short story ‘Murke's Collected Silences’ (‘Doktor Murkes gesammeltes Schweigen’) in its book (1958) and three German-language radio play versions (1965; 1986; 1989). Reference is also made to Benjamin Gwilliam's sound art piece (2007) based on the 1986 adaptation. The Böll story thematises silence and media in various ways, and has definite countertextual aspects, in the sense of technology, textuality, and materiality of language. In the printed story, silence is either verbally named or typographically indicated, whereas the radio plays present or perform it. The compar…

The Administration of Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 Ameliorates Development of DSS-Induced Colitis in Mice

2018

The beneficial effects of probiotics on immune-based pathologies such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been well reported. However, their exact mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. Few studies have focused on the impact of probiotics on the composition of the colonic microbiota. The aim of the present study was to correlate the intestinal anti-inflammatory activity of the probiotic Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) in the dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) model of mouse colitis with the changes induced in colonic microbiota populations. EcN prevented the DSSinduced colonic damage, as evidenced by lower disease activity index (DAI) values and colonic weight/length ratio, when compa…

Sesquiterpene compounds from Inula Viscosa

2007

Two new compounds, 2,5-dihydroxyisocostic acid and 2,3-dihydroxycostic acid together with three known sesquiterpene compounds, Isocostic acid, Carabrone and Tomentosin, have been isolated from the acetone extract of Inula viscosa (L.) Aiton. The structures of all new compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods, in particular 1D and 2D (1)H- and (13)C-NMR. The (13)C-NMR spectra of Isocostic acid and of Tomentosin are reported here for the first time.

Towards the standardization of mitochondrial proteomics: the Italian mt-HPP initiative

2017

The mitochondrial Human Proteome Project aims at understanding the function of the mitochondrial proteome and its crosstalk with the proteome of other organelles. Being able to choose a suitable and validated enrichment protocol of functional mitochondria, based on the specific needs of the downstream proteomics analysis, would greatly help the researchers in the field. Mitochondrial fractions from ten model cell lines were prepared using three enrichment protocols and analyzed on seven different LC-MS/MS platforms. All data were processed using neXtProt as reference database. The data are available for the Human Proteome Project purposes through the ProteomeXchange Consortium with the iden…

Reporting in Conflict Zones in Pakistan: Risks and Challenges for Fixers

2020

As a backbone of reporting in war and conflicts, fixers offer essential assistance to the foreign correspondent in conflict zones, also in Pakistan. With valuable local knowledge and contacts, fixers can arrange travel to secure entry of foreign correspondents into conflict zones in addition to securing interviews with otherwise unattainable figures, while offering reliable translation services. Pakistani media, despite being one of the largest and most developed in South Asia, remains under the strict control of powerful military establishment and government, while seeming to mirror the overarching government sentiment with a distinct lack of research-based news. Challenging this state of …

This note concerns the exceptional buckle-plate to the Christ cavalier of the Apocalypse discove…
