Antioxidant reactions of all-trans retinol in phospholipid bilayers: effect of oxygen partial pressure, radical fluxes, and retinol concentration.
1997
Lipoperoxyl radical-scavenging activity of retinol in unilamellar soybean phosphatidylcholine liposomes was studied under a variety of conditions to appreciate to what extend retinol may be considered an effective antioxidant. Peroxidation, initiated by 2 mM 2,2'-azobis(amidino-propane)hydrochloride (AAPH), was carried out at 160 torr O2 or at 15 torr O2, in the absence or in the presence of 10 to 40 mM retinol. As evaluated by the length of the inhibition periods, t(inh), and by the ratio between the inhibition and propagation rate, R(inh)/R(p), the antioxidant activity of retinol was higher at 15 torr O2 than at 160 torr O2. The consumption rate of retinol was markedly faster at 160 torr …
New pregnane and phenolic glycosides from Solenostemma argel.
2016
Abstract From the aerial parts, pericarps and roots of Solenostemma argel, three new pregnane glycosides (1–3) with two known ones and a new phenolic glycoside (4) have been isolated. Their structures were established by extensive 1D – and 2D NMR and mass spectroscopic analysis. The cytotoxicity of all compounds was evaluated against two human tumor cell lines (SW 480, MCF-7), but none of them was active in the concentration range 0.9–59.0 μM. Compounds 2 and the known argeloside F at non toxic concentrations for the PBMCs (27.3 μM and 27.6 μM, respectively) significantly decreased the Il-1β production by LPS-stimulated PBMCs. All isolated compounds showed a significant antioxidant potentia…
Betacyanins as phenol antioxidants. Chemistry and mechanistic aspects of the lipoperoxyl radical-scavenging activity in solution and liposomes.
2009
Reaction kinetics of betanin and its aglycone betanidin towards peroxyl radicals generated from the azo-initiated oxidation of methyl linoleate in methanol, and of a heterogeneous aqueous/soybean phosphatidylcholine liposomal system, were studied by monitoring formation of linoleic acid hydroperoxides and consumption of the pigments. Betanin was a weak retarder in methanol, and an effective chain breaking antioxidant in the liposomal model, indicating that kinetic solvent effects and partition in lipid bilayers may affect its activity. Betanidin behaved as a chain terminating antioxidant in both models. Kinetic parameters characterizing peroxyl radical-scavenging activity showed that betani…
Solvent-free microwave-assisted extraction of polyphenols from olive tree leaves: Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties
2017
International audience; Response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural networks (ANN) were evaluated and compared in order to decide which method was the most appropriate to predict and optimize total phenolic content (TPC) and oleuropein yields in olive tree leaf (Olea europaea) extracts, obtained after solvent-free microwave- assisted extraction (SFMAE). The SFMAE processing conditions were: microwave irradiation power 250-350 W, extraction time 2-3 min, and the amount of sample 5-10 g. Furthermore, the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the olive leaf extracts, obtained under optimal extraction conditions, were assessed by several in vitro assays. ANN had better predic…
Efficient transfer of positrons from a buffer-gas-cooled accumulator into an orthogonally oriented superconducting solenoid for antihydrogen studies
2012
Positrons accumulated in a room-temperature buffer-gas-cooled positron accumulator are efficiently transferred into a superconducting solenoid which houses the ATRAP cryogenic Penning trap used in antihydrogen research. The positrons are guided along a 9 m long magnetic guide that connects the central field lines of the 0.15 T field in the positron accumulator to the central magnetic field lines of the superconducting solenoid. Seventy independently controllable electromagnets are required to overcome the fringing field of the large-bore superconducting solenoid. The guide includes both a 15° upward bend and a 105° downward bend to account for the orthogonal orientation of the positron accu…
Preparation of Anti-protein and Anti-mannan Antisera against Fungal Cell Wall by Affinity Chromatography
1994
Abstract Iranzo, M., Marcilla, A., Elorza, M. V., Mormeneo, S., and Sentandreu, R. 1994. Preparation of anti-protein and anti-mannan antisera against fungal cell wall by affinity chromatography. Experimental Mycology 18, 159-167. A novel and easy chromatographic method has been developed for the isolation of anti-protein and anti-mannan antisera from a population of polyclonal antibodies obtained against Candida albicans and Yarrowia lipolytica cell wall mannoproteins. The technique is based on the immobilization of mannan (to be used as immunoadsorbent) by Affi-Prep H z resin after the oxidation of neighboring hydroxyl groups of the polysaccharide with sodium periodate. For Y. lipolytica p…
Spin Frustration in Triangular Cu 3 II Complexes with 6‐Methyl‐2‐pyridyloxime as Ligand – Synthesis, Structural, and Magnetic Characterization
2013
In the present work, new examples of μ3-OH/oximato Cu3 triangles have been obtained by treatment of different copper salts with 6-methyl-2-pyridylaldoxime [6-MepyC(H)NOH, 6-mepaoH]. Depending on the anion, the compounds [Cu3(OH)(6-mepao)3(O2CPh)2] (1), [Cu6(OH)2(6-mepao)6(NO3)3](NO3)·H2O (2·H2O) and [Cu6(OH)2(6-mepao)6(ClO4)3](ClO4) (3) formed and were characterized. Complex 1 is an isolated triangle, whereas 2 and 3 are hexanuclear compounds with two triangular subunits linked by anionic bridges. Susceptibility measurements show very strong antiferromagnetic interactions and the presence of antisymmetric exchange at low temperature. The magnetic properties of these frustrated triangles hav…
La continuïtat «bioliterària» al País Valencià: de Carles Ros a Carles Salvador (o de Gregori Maians a Vicent Andrés Estellés, passant per Teodor Llo…
2015
