Application of LA-ICP-MS as a rapid tool for analysis of elemental impurities in active pharmaceutical ingredients.
2014
The control of inorganic contaminants in active pharmaceutical ingredients has a significant role in the quality control of drug products. The concentration limits for metal residues in drug products have been defined by various regulatory guidelines. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is a powerful and fast analytical technique for multi-elemental analysis. A disadvantage in using LA-ICP-MS method is the lack of matrix reference materials for validation and calibration purposes. This article focuses on the handling strategy of laboratory-made matrix calibration standards for the quantification of elemental impurities in an active pharmaceutical ingredie…
Trehalose-hydroxyethylcellulose microspheres containing vancomycin for topical drug delivery.
2001
Abstract A new formulation, in which vancomycin is entrapped into trehalose and hydroxyethylcellulose (Natrosol ® ) spherical matrices, is described. Microspheres were produced by the solvent evaporation method. The entrapped drug was fully recovered following microspheres dissolution. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses proved that Natrosol maintains trehalose in its amorphous form. The stabilizing effects of trehalose on vancomycin were evaluated even after long storage and heating of microspheres. Calorimetric data indicated no decomposition of the entrapped drug. In vitro drug release, already performed by using a general two-compartment linear time-invariant open model, suggests…
Activity coefficients and Donnan coion exclusion in charged membranes with weak-acid fixed charge groups
1998
Abstract We have studied theoretically the effects that the dissociation equilibrium of weak-acid fixed charge groups (e.g. carboxyl groups) exerts on the mean activity coefficients in charged membranes using a Donnan formalism. The model calculations indicate that unless carbon dioxide is excluded from the external aqueous solution, the pH of the membrane solution can be low enough to affect significantly the effective fixed charge concentration and the coion exclusion when the membrane fixed charge concentration is high compared with the external solution salt concentration. Although this problem was already pointed out in previous studies, the possibility that the pH and salt concentrati…
Modelling of the ternary system H3PO4/H2O/TBP
2002
Abstract A thermodynamic model is presented for the extraction of phosphoric acid from water by tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP), from aqueous solutions containing 0–6 mol/kg phosphoric acid. The activity coefficient of phosphoric acid was calculated from experimental data using Pitzer’s equation, and those of the components in the organic phase were calculated by Sergievskii–Danus’s relationship. The proposed model gives a satisfactory description of the distribution of phosphoric acid and water, in the considered concentration range, by taking into account the formation of the following species: TBP, TBP·H2O, H3PO4·TBP and (TBP)2·H3PO4·H2O.
Die bestimmung von sedimentationskoeffizient, diffusions-koeffizient und molekulargewicht von α-amylasen nach der methode des aktivitätstransportes
1965
Abstract Sedimentation and diffusion coefficients determined by optical methods on pure (crystallized) enzymes are compared with those obtained by activity measurements on the unpurified enzymes. On performing the experiments under suitable conditions, results of the two methods are in good agreement. The calculation of the molecular weights of the unpurified enzymes is somewhat uncertain because the partial specific volume in most cases is not accurately known.
In this study we approach the issue of the foundation of the old Roman city of Bracara Augusta taking into consideration the archaeological register and its theme and meaning. Apart from the ex …

Contribution of thallium-201-SPECT to the grading of tumorous alterations of the brain
1992
Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with thallium-201-chloride (201Tl) was used in 22 patients to assess the grade of malignancy of brain tumors. Low- and high-grade malignant gliomas could be well differentiated by calculating the Grade Index (GI), i.e., 201Tl uptake in the tumor area relative to a contralateral brain region. Low-grade gliomas (WHO-grade I-II) usually showed a GI of1.5. Tumors classified histologically as high-grade malignant (WHO-grade III-IV) had GI values greater than 1.42 and a mean value of 1.89. Until labelled amino-acid tracers for gamma-cameras become commercially available, thallium-201 brain-SPECT can provide an independent and complementary method…
Myxoid lipoadenorna of the parathyroid gland
1980
A myxoid lipoadenoma of the parathyroid gland causing primary hyperparathyroidism is reported. The very rare and histologically unusual tumor consists of an epithelial component which is combined with a stromal component in a characteristic way. Slender, irregularly branched trabeculae which mainly consist of chief cells as well as a few oxyphil cells are found as epithelial component. The predominantly myxomatous and only focally lipomatous stromal component is interpreted as an integrated tumor component of the lipoadenoma which is derived from the parathyroid adipose tissue.
Tissue characterization of benign brain tumors: Use of NMR-tissue parameters
1988
Abstract To evaluate the potentials of NMR tissue parameters for tissue characterization we investigated 68 patients with benign brain tumors. Tissue parameters were accurately measured by a recently developed interlaced triple sequence. Each individual tumor was characterized by a set of three numbers (relaxation times T 1 and T 2 and proton density Rho). Different tumors exhibited significant overlaps of the three tissue parameters. Therefore a reliable prediction of the histological diagnosis based on the quantitative analysis of tissue parameters alone was not possible. T 2 -prolongation correlated well with water content and “regressive changes” in meningiomas and neuromas.
